How good is it, can any one tell a little about it?
Thanks, I'm viewing the feature list.

Solved by using a "trash" account.

Which if you don't have one, you should get one.
Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail even...though imho it's better w/ yahoo or hotmail. An account you use to sign up for things you'd otherwise want to remain anonymous or might have emails coming in (like newsletters or adverts).

thats the best thing you can possibly do. i've been doing it for years. it's a lot better if you make up your own ID to fill out online forms with. the less info you freely give, the better. when all else fails you're Ed Smith from California, zip code 90213.

haha

I picked New York 10001.
Hopefully it's minimal, but someplace an office in an industrial park might have received some mail.

Guys, I gotta correct you. If you're downloading software in exchange for personal information, giving false information is bearing false witness. It's a sin. You need to stop doing this. You don't have to read their advertising, but if you're entering into an agreement (software for info) and you want to be right by God, you need to answer truthfully. James says "You have not because you ask not, and when you ask, you ask that you can spend on your fleshly desires." How can God bless false witness? Do yourselves a favor and give your rightful name, or don't take the bait of free software.

Jet,
take it easy. I agree that honesty is very important as a Christian, even a commandment. I would suggest sharing your Godly wisdom with a more generous helping of gentleness. The platform of this forum is more geared toward encouragement than rebuke. Diplomacy is important, or you'll end up annoying everyone.

We could discuss whether it's "false witness" or perhaps "lying" but the difference is probably neither here nor there. Maybe it is wrong, maybe it isn't; I do know it is way too easy to get personal information about people, and not much control over how it's used.

Should I ever plan on actually buying anything, I will then provide correct information as it means I'm entering into a real relationship with them.
Is it an advertising tool on their part to get new business, thus requirement being truthful information? Probably advertising, but requiring accurate information? *shrug* I never give my social security number to anything remotely similar to marketing, even if it asks, regardless of whether it's "Fill out card for free or for chance to win" or anything more serious. Financial, government, medical, or occasionally job contracts are the only thing I'd display that # on.

Someone asks me my name on the street in passing or perhaps at the sample counter at the local grocery store, I am not obliged to give my real name - or at least not my full name.

Another twist is an online presence. I'm betting your name isn't Jetspice in the physical world. To most of the internet I *am* "NetCog". Though to assorted other corners I am assorted other names. For "NetCog's" purpose he has a specific "real" name. The location might be fudging it as I (NetCog) don't consider myself to be in NY.

To continue down that train of thought - (video) games, movies, etc all could be considered "false witness" or at least "lying" by different filters of thought. Shoot...even sport teams could be lumped in.

I'm offering this post here as a simple counter thought. I'd be willing to continue this discussion on another thread. If you want to start it, I'll copy this response to it.

I'm gonna stand with Jet on this one.

A) steveth45, reproaching your christian brothers is not only acceptable but our responsiblity. he hasn't gone over the edge. he was rather civil.
frankly, civility isn't a requirement. it has it's place, tho.
frankly, those prophets of God weren't exactly soothsayers.

B)netcog, being honest isn't about giving your personal information to all who ask. Lying is about decieving. we all know your name really isn't netcog. you are decieving us. it's just a handle.
but when giving fake addresses to this company, you are implying that is accurate information. (sometimes even more, when you sign an agreement staying that it is accurate) you are deceving DAZ. sure, they might not even care, but does it make your act blameless?
if privacy is such a big deal, don't get the product.

Couldn't you just unsubscribe to their mailing list? I know if you unsubscribe with spammers they will send you more emails. But Daz3D is a professional company.

I understand what you are saying, and partially agree with you. I've met Jet in real life, and he's a great guy. I found this portion of his statement "It's a sin. You need to stop doing this." a bit overstated, that's all. With so many varieties/flavors of Christianity represented here along with non-Christians and members of other religions, you can't assume that somebody will receive strong statements like these.

on one side, i hate internet advertisers. they are 90% liars who just want a click so they can cash out. if you give them your information, you're just giving them free money. some would say "but they're giving you free software!", what do you think "free" means? should the definition be "no money down, just your social security number"? from a safety aspect, should you REALLY be giving people exact instructions on how to get to your house and find you?

on the other side, it IS lying to make up an identity, you DO bring up a good point there. even if they are a bunch of people trying to market your personal information without your consent, you should act based on how God wants you to, not on how other people treat you.

In any event, I'm downloading Bryce 5.0. Thanks for the tip, coolj. Ahh, yet another tool that will rot in my ever growing collection. If they want to send me more credit card ads in the mail, so be it. I can use them in the fireplace to warm my house.

Maybe it was aimed to Christians only and I don't think he did anything wrong by doing so because every Christian should - how would you say it - "hear the word" since we are followers of Christ. But we are not to expect other than Christians to do this, that is true.

My apologies for the tone. If I type with a gentle thought or a smile on my face, it doesn't necessarily translate. Bearing false witness a sin, but I'm a sinner, too, in many ways. Yikes, I gotta stop sinning!

The foundation from which I speak is to see the people of Christian coders accomplish the dreams that God has put in their heart. He has given us all the tools we need to succeed. As we run toward our calling, the only thing that can get in our way is ourselves. So this, to those who need to hear it: position yourself so that God can bless you. Give right information. Do things like pay taxes, destroy pirated software, install protection against pornography--do whatever it takes to get right. And then be blessed!

And back on topic, I think I'll download Bryce 5.0, too!
