Hi all, I have to share this with you bros and sis, in case you didn't already know there is a free 3D modeling tool called sketchup which is really easy to use. I just went trough the three tutorials yesterday and what is also great about google sketchup is that you can share your models and download other peoples models. If you want just the models take a look in the 3D warehouse. Unfortunately you can't export the models so this maybe useful to you only if you are making a 2D game with 3D graphics.

It appears that you have to buy the pro version in order to use the plugins that can export to 3D formats... ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

For free model program check out blender. I'm trying out the/a tutorial...wow but the program is complicated...someone told me that means it's powerful...? |

Thanks jestermax, are those xml based formats, do you know? Blender is very good, it has some proper import/export cabilities too. ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

the sketchup exporter puts them in XML format, but Ogre has a command-line tool to convert them into meshes, which actually works with the sketchup exporter, you just have to tell it where the convertor is. and wow, that was one long sentence ![]() |

That's pretty cool. Sketchup was nice however the lack of any export capability (except for Google Earth) made the free version rather unuseful for gamedev. It's interesting to hear that now it has an exporter for Ogre. It still remains unusefull for the rest of us that don't use Ogre though ![]() |

I suppose the ogre's exporter only works in the full version? Because if it can export to simple xml format which ogre uses it could be possible import from that format to some other 3D modeling tool. ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

That's what I was thinking too. However if it can export to Google Earth and if the export format is open you could use same data to make a custom exporter. EDIT: [This message has been edited by fearless (edited July 11, 2006).] |

Thanks fearless. I was able to export from the sketchup using that. Now I just need an importer for blender which seems to be available, just that the download server doesnt seem to be online atm. ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |
