I assume you are referring to game levels? If so, it depends on the game and what tools are available for it, but generally speaking a .map file is the data file that is compiled into a level (typically a .bsp file). Games such as Quake, HalfLife, and probably most of the newer PC games use these formats. Usually the .map file is created by the level editor for the game in question. I have heard of a .map file being modified in a text editor (like Notepad or UltraEdit, etc), but usually the different level editors available do a better job.

Welcome to the forums by the way.

How do I make one using blitzbasic? One of the samples for blitzbasic is "BlitzBoulders" and it has a folder called "Levels" with .map files.

I really really really wan't to make a game and I'm trying to learn everything I can.

First you have to know what you want to make. What are you more interested in making, 2D or 3D games?

Welcome to the forums. Do you have a link to that demo? If you're using Blitz3D then it's pretty simple to make levels with Maplet. It lets you export them out to the B3D format. They can come out quite nice...
