I'm going to preface this with: This mostly a joke, post, and is intended as humour! so take it as such please. Don't read into it, and take it with a grain of salt. I've been exploring some Inverse Kinematics problems lately, and I got a bit stumped at some point. I decided to check the bible for some help, and it didn't mention it! Not even once! At that point all my IK code and papers just disappeard off my hard drive!. Praise the Lord for taking such a painful thing away from me On that cheery note, has anyone here had any experience in IK solving at all? |

Yeah - I had a similar experience. I had been working through the complex mathematics involved with time-travel until I came to the Millenium equation. This particular equation calculates the correct phase shift required for someone entering a different timezone - and the equation wouldn't computer. I checked my Bible for the answer and to my surprise - Millenium is not mentioned once. What a disappointment. Now I have to stay in reality. |

Oh brother ![]() Actually, no, I haven't either. I've recently started a math course called "Game Mathematics" from the Game Institute (www.gameinstitute.com) though...so maybe we'll touch on it and I'll be able to help in, say, a year or so Check out http://www.flipcode.com and http://www.gamedev.net ...there may be something there that can help, though I doubt they'll be providing Biblical versus to support the solutions presented Best of luck! -Krylar [This message has been edited by Krylar (edited July 09, 2001).] |

Game Programming Gems is a seriously good book for anyone writing games and has a chapter on inverse kinematics. I haven't done it myself, so I'm afraid I can't help beyond that. You're likely to find an Image of the Day on Flipcode that does it and has source code though. |

Totally agree. That book is very cool. Has a bunch of good info on A* pathfinding too, including ways to speed it up and smooth out search paths. Some of the chapters are more theory based, but if you know how to code and such, it should serve you well. Here's the Amazon link for more info: -Krylar [This message has been edited by Krylar (edited July 10, 2001).] |

I also note on Amazon that the second book is about to be released. I must admit I've not found time to really learn much from the first ( I *started* a 3D game after writing a 2D one, but I've been so busy with work, and learning other stuff ( ATL, WTL, STL, ( what can I say, I like templates ;0), graphics filters, GDI+, etc. ) that I've not had a chance to continue with it. I believe the Graphics Gems books are OOP, so I should probably still buy it while I can. |

Yeah, I've heard the Game Programming Gems are quite good. I should look into it, or see if the local University has a copy. Yeah, I'm a regular at flipcode and gamedev, and I keep an eye out for good articles. I've found a few good white papers on the topic, so I'll see what I can bash out in my spare time. And I agree wholeheartedly, templates are great! Phil |

I had some inverse kinamatics in my robotics class in Undergrad, and foward kinamatics too. And just plano kinamatics in my kinamatics classes. I'm a bit rusty, after 3 classes I only remember that my prof said that inverse kinimatics for a stewards platform is hard. Sorry. Love in Christ sorta like laying out the reference frames then solving for the joints angles and lenghts. |

That time travel fund is hilarious. I passed that on to some friends |
