just earlier today, apple unveiled a new line of redesigned ipods that includes shuffle in new colors, nano that plays video, regular ipod renamed "ipod classic" with anodized aluminum case, new ipod like iphone except without phone capability, and ringtones that you can buy from itunes. this is great news for all mankind! (at least it is for steve jobs, because then you can give him more money*) please comment about your great joy. (or anger) i am an ipod fanatic (even though i only have a nano 2g and a shuffle 2g), which is why i perhaps got a little carried away starting a few sentences back.

*i stole that joke from the yahoo news article about the ipods

Smashing news. I can't wait to see Rockbox and maybe iPod Linux ported to those new iPods.
It's about time Apple came out with an official video Nano, I watch videos on my first generation 4GB Black iPod Nano all the time.

A myriad of things. Plays music, lets you view full resolution photos and zoom in and out (it can't handle extremely high res over 5 megapixels due to memory constraints), has a file browser that lets you open folders and delete them, create them, cut them, copy them, a ton of games including a Doom port and a Gameboy emulator, plays mpeg1 and mpeg2 videos can record audio, plays way more audio codecs than the iPod OS:
Supported formats include MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Musepack, FLAC, AAC, ALAC, Monkey's Audio, AC3 and WavPack. for more information see the SoundCodecs page. It also has advanced audio features such as gapless playback and customizable crossfading! A five-band fully-parametric equalizer which allows fine-tuning the output, ReplayGain to normalise your volume levels and Crossfeed for optimal headphone listening.

It has a text editor, customizable system themes and icons, and another of my favorites, On-The-Go playlist creation and adjustment, and full file bookmarking support, and my most favorite music feature (that the iPod doesn't have) of all: song queing.

Another feature worth mentioning is that it has blind user support, where a voice reads what's on the screen.

The only downside is that battery life is a little shorter on some iPods than the original iPod firmware is, howerver on other supported devices, the battery life is greater than the original firmware.

WARNING: Rockbox is so useful, you might find the original iPod firmware boring and useless. I can't switch back.

If I need a new music device within a year, and they still don't have basic music support on the new iPods, I will buy some other music device (like an iRiver) because I like it so much.

EDIT: Check out their plugin index: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/PluginIndex

Seeing all the messed up protection from 3rd party programs writing to the iTunesDB file, I think I might leave well enough alone and get a Sansa e200 or something like that next time. I can't stand the size of the iPod classic, so that leaves me a Nano, which may never get Rockbox ported to it if it has the same encryption as the 2nd Gen Nano did.
