Thanks for sharing this. I am not a fan of this type of game, so please remember that. . .

I find it hard to steer during the race and the music/sound seems a little to much and obnoxious. Even my kids think that. Fun=8/10, once you learned it it would be fun.

3d = 9/10, great 3d and frame rate was great even on my secondary slow machine 1.6GHZ while running a virus scan.

Thanks for sharing though

Ken

Hi Kenman,

Yes, I'm using the newer gamestudio A6 engine with shaders, but also using the older A5 movement templates.

Are you using the mouse, joystick or keyboard to steer? I was just wondering.

I think the keyboard works best, but the others should work, just not as well.

I just played it. Its pretty good, the steering is hard to control but that might be easier if you slow it down. You might make the Hard mode "Hard" I beat Easy, Hard, and medium on first try. Hannah seemed the easiest, I didn't try anybody else but Cain though. What's the songs from? Who's that in the Upper Left corner? Are you RA Games

Hi, Yes RA Games.
I had to change the name, because another company is actively using that name.

RA is my initials. --> Randall Alaimo

but,

RA Games is a board game manufacturer --> Real Action Games

Yes, Cain is the easiest to win, because it's his level. Maybe I should slow him down? lol
Whoever's race level it is, I made them faster than normal.

The songs are songs that I made on my yamaha keyboard here.
I did post the songs soundtrack on several christian music sites and they liked them a lot,
so they must be okay?

The model in the upper left corner is Hannah the Librarian. She will be in the trailor movie and web-site soon.

This game is about Hannah's dream. HANNAH THE TEACHER = HANNAH THE HORSE ! The site and movie will show that.

Thanks for playing...

Btw, you won in hard mode? Wow!
But, it was a close finish right?

Actually Hannah seemed the easiest. Yeah I won in hard, I was a couple seconds ahead of everybody else.

Hi,

Oh I see, I'd better adjust that.

Yes, Cain and Hannah are the fastest in that level.

Prissy is a fast swimmer and Rueben is good at obstacles, but both those two are slow on land.

In the last race level here, I put in "siege weapons" to throw the creatures with. Hehe

Yes, the steering is difficult on slower machines. This is expected.

There is a 500 tree forest to move through.
I could have cut the tree's out, then it would have worked, but everybody
would have said it "low quality", so I put in the big forest.

On the other hand, everybody will say it "low quality", now because of the steering on their slow PC's.

Who can win?

Yes, so this game is AHEAD OF IT'S TIME.
In a few years from now, all PC's will be faster, so then everyone will be happy.

The game should have a PC of 2 gigaherts or better to run with excellent steering. lol

The slower PC's of 1.6 GHz will still work, but not with excellent steering.

I tried the game on my better machine, and you are right, the controls are easier on a faster computer, but still not that easy.

By requiring a 2GHz processor, then it most certainly is ahead of its time.

It's got 8 different playable characters. How many characters does your game have?

A 500 tree forest with SHADED water and models. Does your game have that?

Real music with lyrics too.

But, aggghhh, I should have made DEMONIC with killing, blood and all that stuff, then you guys would have liked it a lot more.

Yes, demonic characters with lots of killing. Soo entertaining to so many. lol

Oh, and one last thing to mention.

On the main menu, you will notice <if you have a graphics card with shaders>,
That there are ANIMATED SHADED MODELS THERE.
If your pixel shader is under 2.0, then shaders are not visible.

But anyways, okay, so as far as I know, this is the only title in either 3D Gamestudio or Torque, to have animated shaded models on the game menu.

Most games, have cheap sprites or some such lame nonsense on their menus.

This one has real 3D animated models with shaders applied right there on the menu.

Now what other game has that? Huh?
I never heard of that, so it must be invented by Randall? Maybe? lol

if that's addressed to me then:

sometimes i wish my name was Randall....then people would confuse me with the real Randall and then i'd be like "oh no, i haven't made a game that shoots animals out of cannons " and they'd be like "All your base are belong to us"

We have to excite our audience in some manner.

In "Command and Conquer", the players get exciting building an army of tanks or planes and then invading the other guys base.

In "Duke, doom or Halo", people get excited getting weapons and shooting down aliens.

In "World of Warcraft", they get exited casting spells and stuff and conquering.

In "Grand theft auto", they get excited by stealing cars.

In this game, they get excited by riding rockets to the moon, breakin up glass mazes, getting shot out of cannons, getting bombarded by bomber planes, sliding down ramps onto huge trampolines or waterslides, etc.

I think that all gamers just want to experience things that REAL life cannot give them maybe?

I did not give them "the killing", but gave them other things to do. hehe

speaking of other things to do, turn the Dance Party into some kind of minigame. maybe a DDR clone or some other form of arcade game.

turning is pretty crazy; making the turn rate slower would improve gameplay.

balance the animals. There should never be an ultimate racer or a weak racer unless you have to move up levels and unlock more powerful racers. A balance with strengths and weakness for different play styles can make a great. What is so great about starcraft as opposed to the plethora of RTS's out there? It takes 3 radically different races and balances them beautifully. Balancing is a very difficult task to do and takes time and dedication but it shows in the end.

solid opponents. maybe my memory doesn't serve me well, but I think I recall running through the pig as I was passing him up. Having the racers interact with eachother, such as blocking, will add to the realism and strategy of the game. Another option is to have the player gain a speed boost and the opponent a speed drop as they run through. (feature in CombatCars, made running over opponents very fun)

special abilities (another feature from CombatCars, I admit. hey, that game was awesome). make each animal unique. maybe instead of food giving a speed boost, have it power up their abilities. (biblical tie-in: God gave each of us different gifts) Give the Hannah the Horse a Speedboost, Reuben the Rhino has to activate his obstacle-immunity thing (that was a good feature for the rhino).

and... now looking back up I just realized you finished the game and all I said is null and void. oh well. too lazy to erase it. that was my 2 cents on what will make the game better.

BTW Arch, Cain would be the one with the Speed Boost.

give him Pounce, either a really quick, fast speed boost or something like that combatcars collision thing I talked about.

Nice ideas Arch, but it would require a significant re-wirte of the AI and since nobody is interested in distribution, then this game title will lose lots of money for sure. Yes, my money, so I do lose heart.

In conclussion, portions of this games ideas was based upon SEGA's 1997 release of:
SONIC_R

Which was also a 3D racing game.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_R

Sonic_R was a "sonic the hedgehog" racing game.
There were 5 primary characters, sonic, tails, knuckles, amy and dr. robotnik.

This SEGA game had no cutscenes <custom cameras>, except for the starting and finish lines. And basically it was all terrains and a village to race through. There was no whacky stuff like cannons, rockets, etc., but just terrains and basic racing stuff to encounter.
There was no objects to get in your way, only rings to give you speed bursts.

Anyways, each of these SEGA 5 characters had their own strengths and weaknesses. Some were faster on land and others faster in the water.

The game had a 5 song soundtrack and had 5 race levels, while this game has 11 songs and 8 race levels and characters.

The music was not christian at all, but sang about supersonic racing, sunny days, etc. It has nice songs, but poor lyrics.

My kids were small back then, and they liked this game so much that one day I surprised them. Because I actually took a game CD into the car here in Sacramento, and then started playing songs there! We were all singing about the race game together while driving in the car. <funny stuff> Yes, singing and more singing and sharing good times with the kids.

Anyways, we had a good time and I started realizing the "spiritual" nature of this experience. Because singing IS spiritual, did you guys know that??? "WELL, WHY DOESN'T SOMEBODY MAKE A CHRISTIAN GAME LIKE THIS?" I asked myself. So, then I asked myself, "WHY NOT ME?"

And so, this game was started upon. Why moan and complain, just do it right???

Well now on towards making the movies and the game-site and then I'll retire.
No more christian games, gamers, or game-making for me. I give up.
Both game titles that I made were never accepted by the christian community, except for a few pastors worldwide.

But, when I get to heaven, I'll tell the Lord, "Lord?, hey at least I tried to do it for you."

Anyways, the demo for the game I will host at this link.

[URL=http://www.noahsadventures.com/downloads/ZooRace.exe[/URL]

as long as I can afford it, so the world can be blessed with some good God-Centered fun.

yeah... but I thought Sonic R sucked.
Then again, I have really high standards for the Sonic marque.
but, also on the other hand, my little brother seemed to like Sonic R...
I guess I must be more of a Car racer. (NFS:Carbon, CombatCars, ftw)

I don't mean to discourage you. I think it can be better.
I've seen so many games on the market that just get published too fast.
Jowood is notorious for this. They're games have great ideas but lacks polish. and so I will purposely steer away from them, downloading a demo here and there to see if they got it right. Not yet. sad story.

well, if you can't find a publisher maybe you should consider taking it back and reworking it. granted the reworking I have in mind would be rather extensive. For example, a more cartoonish, caricature-style art would be much better. The only thing kids love more than cartoon animals is Animals Close-Up With a Wide-Angle Lens. (I'm pretty sure nobody will get this joke but me). Also, for example, changing the metal "concert" rails with wood fences will add to the environment.
your game has potential, but feels unfinished.

I'm sorry that your giving up, tho.

1) Randall is working with very limited resources
2) He's not refined with alot of game development skills, so he's tredding into new water all the time
3) Implementing something as small as one thing you see in that game could have taken him days if not weeks implementing, the big things take months.
4) If anyone could truly comprehend the amount of work that went into this, through Randall's eyes, it'd blow you away the amount of dedication one would need to achieve this.

So you have one guy, with all these obstacles, spending 3 years of his life doing this (apart from his job), because he believes in something and is aiming for it. He's way under resourced and under experienced, and despite all the obvious flaws, which imo are so obvious they arn't worth mentioning, and are probably 100 times more obvious to Randall himself than us, especially considering who Randall is and his circumstances, there is no game as uniquely crazy and funny as this. I couldn't stop laughing playing through this game, makes me love this game for what it is because there's nothing like it out there

I know that the work going into game development is extraordinary.
I'm not trying to discourage him or rip on his game.
If anything, I'm asking him to keep devving.

I know I can be harsh at times, but I thought, in my mind, that I was providing valuable feedback. When I bring out a beta (that I know will be much smaller than Zoo Race), I'd want criticism. I want you guys to pick things that would make it better and to point out things that plain suck. I can't see all the flaws in gameplay and design so I'd want beta testers.

Randall, I'm sorry if you took what I say as an insult, I meant it to be constructive.
Just, if you enjoy making games, why stop now?
Is it a financial issue?

Oh, no need to be sorry, you guys are GREAT!
quote:
Just, if you enjoy making games, why stop now?

But, I don't know and wonder if I really enjoy it anymore?

Sometimes, I get mad at the gamestudio A6 engine, and I find it doing things that is not coded, but I always managed to find some type of "work around". sometimes, for example, gamestudio's SED and MED just terminate for no reason and then I lose the work. The screen just closes by itself! Gosh how frustrating!

I get upset to the point of yelling and sometimes cussing at my computer. My wife thinks that "I'm not a christian anymore". And so I find myself so desperately WANTING to do something great for God, that I sin in the process.

quote:
Is it a financial issue?

I keep making games and only get back a fraction of what I spent making it, but more than that is "physical" issues. I have high blood pressure now and the medication puts me to sleep sometimes. Other medications are worse yet.

Also, my joints are starting to ache, even though I'm a young 47 years old. lol My knee's and knuckles sometimes ache and make sounds for no reason. There are periods that physically, I fight myself to stay at that keyboard and do it.

I'm thinking it may be time to let the youth do it and not me. But then again, if I say these things, and if I think that He is actually telling me get involved with another project, then He knows that I'll try and do it. Because if any of us hears that call, then we must do it.

I'm just a poor dumb creature like everyone else is.
Talk to you guys later,
Ran...
