Hey everyone. I just uploaded the test version of Darkening 0.3 which you can download by following this link to the game's site.
I'm looking forward to hear your thoughts about the game either in here or in the game's own site/forums!
It's little buggy in what comes to starting the game, but thanks to Lord Jesus that I am able to release it at all.

EDIT:
The game is now at version 0.5.1
You can get it from here:
Darkening v0.5.1
And please apply this patch that updates the game to version 0.5.2: patch

In Christ,
Jari.

I'm not sure if it was there when you posted your reply, but did you click on the link under the Darkening menu that says Game shots? I will say that it's kind of hard to tell what's going on in the screen shots, however. Of course, screen shots do tend to look bad on my monitor where I'm at now.

Hey, thanks for the replies. Yes, PointOfLight mentioned the Game Shots link for the screen shots. It maybe however that there is nothing wrong with your monitor. The graphics just aren't the bright side of this game (but the darkening, hehe), at least not at the moment. (But I do like them very much, did you know I made them? )

Looks really good, I downloaded and installed it. Looks perfect for me, I've been wanting a good RPG to play, and this one is christian. Unfortunetly it seems to stall as it begins. I see the hud, but no character or anything.

Its happened 5 times in a row so far, and I haven't been able to play yet.

Oh, and a characer customization scheme might REALLY boost the interest of your users.

5 times? I thought it would be random but that doesnt sound like it. Hmm, I'll try to figure it out.

For now you can build up your prayer list. It's selected able from the new game menu.

Ok the bug should be fixed now and I have uploaded new version (0.3.1). Thanks again Mene-Mene for letting me know, I did not know it was that bad until you told me.
Well let's hope it works now and that I didn't break anything more. Thanks to Lord it should be already much more stable.

It just worked, and I love it. a 3rd person would be awesome with perhaps some more description to environments would be a great touch. Another bug report is that after enemies are defeated sometimes mark and amy will continue to fight the non-existant enemy. The bars are also kinda confuseing, but an ingame tutorial might be nice instead of going through the readme, and will get more audience.

I love the message behind the teamwork the execessive scriptures will eventually get to me in a good way, and the enemies, I just love it.

What's it written in?

If there's any help I can give?

Are you going to sell this?

Misspelling in the video tutorial. "This bar shows the amount of spirit or enery you have." should be "This bar shows the amount of spirit or energy you have."

Changing the icons might also help the player. Maybe the candle?

There's actually a video tutorial, please take a look in the site, the link is above the download link.

Sure! The graphics need work, gui graphics mostly. Sure the game could use other new graphics as well but at the moment I don't have the time to focus on the graphics. So I have to leave the decision to you, on how you could help. So if you see a gui and texture or 3D model in the game which you could improve then please make a suggestion and I can give instructions more detailed instructions.

Also just reporting bugs and typos in the story dialogs helps a lot.

I don't know if any one noticed but I think that there was no download available yestarday. This came as surprise but the version 0.3.1 should be now downloadable from the downloads page.

Hmm I don't see how that question is related to the game? Ok it is really Jari and it's just an finnish name, I haven't researched the roots of it.

Oh! Is the default name of the main character Jari? or where did you see it?
I think the version 0.3.0 installer had the user preference files included so it must have gotten there that way.

Hey, if any one is interested to help with the GUI graphics then please take a look at this screen shot, that shows what needs to be done. Help would be really great here if some one could even make suggestion for the graphics.

I was thinking of using a photo icon for the party member icons, what do you think?

I'm using FF 2 as well. I'll try again. It works, server must have been down or something that day. I'll be looking on suggestions.

First, I'd suggest changing the player looks on the left. I think a great look would be to take a screenshot of a 3d model. It may be a bit difficult to do this though. The model would have to be tilted to show the full 3d effect.

Second, I'd really work on the GUI for the scripture system, its kind of tough to understand at first.

Third, adding a queue would make the actions a bit more self explanitory.

Fourth, I'd use a lot more rounded, polished look than rectangles, it looks more profesional.

Fifth, I'd add some menus for those who are keyboard deprived. Some options in the options, an ingame option on the enemy screen for attacking.

Sixth, I'd change the opening screen, its a bit dull without color.

these are just some Ideas off the top of my head, I'll take another look at the game to see if I can help more.

What audience are you trying to appeal to?

A little suggestion, at the beginning make it so that the player is weak, and so he has to rely on his brothers and sisters in Christ, but as he fights more evil, he gets more options, life, scriptures, and stuff like that. Just an Idea.

Thank you mene-mene for all those suggestions and great feedback! But I was asking some one to draw the new gui graphics for the GUIs marked with red circles in that screen shot. Sorry for not being clear.
Some of your suggestions are actually on the todo!

Thanks again, I apreciate a lot this kind of feedback.

Hi, I need testers for Darkening to tell what you think about it. And what you like and what not.
So I released 0.5 beta. It's quite close for final 0.5 but multiplayer is still missing.

You can get it from here:

Also please join at the forums for discussion if you are interested about the game.

Sry about dbl post. Way to late for me to go all the way through, amazing so far, it really makes me want to pray, and to play. One little comment. it'd be nice if there were labels over the areas/pointers to where to go. Another thing, is it'd be nice if I knew the advantages of far vs. close combat, all I see so far, is if you are low on spirit, or your friends. It'd also be nice to see the points, and how I progress in power in God's word. Also you miscapitalized God once or more times so far, and you forgot to have Paul say his name.

True. I understand it may not be easy to find your way through the levels without markers. But I don't yet know what would be a good way to point the right direction.

True I need to put some info about the close/ranged difference. And about many other things as well, and write a manual.

Actually the characters that don't really believe in God use the non-capitalized version , while brothers say capitalized.

But where did I forgot to Paul say his name?

First, I'm loving it, and I'm glad that you appreciate my feedback. I'd think that Truth shall make you free verse should create a Anti-Lie resistance. Perhaps it does in the form of Temptation...

Amy has once again healed HIMSELF. I see you're right about the God vs. god. At least now where I am. Saving the game would be nice, but I know that's rather hard to pull off.

On a rather private note, Guardian reminds me of someone here.

Are there 2 Brother Michaels? Because if I read it right, Brother Michael both greets you, and is standing with Brother Paul.

One nice feature would be to see recent messages, in case you got too excited .

Paul forgets to say his name at the beginning in his tutorial, he just says, "hello". rather than, "Brother Paul: Hello."

A couple times, the Bible won't show up for the first text with the Deceiver, ext.

I just thought of something cool. You know how you pick up scriptures to increase your attributes, well what if Wrong scriptures decreased your attributes, and Right ones increase, so it displays the verse, and you have to remember if that's in the Bible or not. It already says something, but they don't look like real scriptures, perhaps you've already done it.

Just a random Idea, it would be cool if as you progress to have classes, like Amy's a prayer warrior, and Mark a Scripture Quoter. In that if you're a prayer warrior your far attack is stronger, but if a Scripture Quoter your close attack.

A suggestion for a new verse, would be:

quote:

Isaiah 40:31
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

temporarily protecting you from the swarm of enemies. (like keeping them from getting near you, or maybe even blocking their attacks. Just a thought.

That's all for now.

It should save automatically, so that you can enter the load game menu next time you start the game and continue. But maybe it buggy? Or the load game button isnt in the main menu?

Probably not, Michael just had it's personal greeting dialog that I removed.

True, I'm adding that. A log message in the top left box.

Ok, I have to check that. Maybe you didn't target the arguer?

Yes that's almost exactly how it works Just that your spirit lowers when you pickup a wrong scripture. And the right one to pick is the corresponding scripture to the lastly preached scripture (agains't the evil spirit).

Nice idea. I was thinking that some brother prefer praying more than preaching. Maybe I can add something like this too.

And thanks for the verse suggestion, that's a nice idea about keeping the enemies away!

God bless.

The "load game" button doesn't appear in the menus.

I was having trouble getting through some places because all the evil spirits would surround me, and pound me together, so I thought of that verse, and that "power".

Yeah they can surround you quite well in some situations. This made me think about jumping off from the middle of them, could add a prayer which does that.

Lots of extra time today, so I'll report lots of bugs.

First, I'm looking all over, and still no "load game button".

Second, the Paul not introducing himself is seeable here, http://www.savefile.com/files/1113423

Third, not really a bug, but could you explain a little more what the different scriptures do? Like power ext.?

Fourth, who is this guy? http://www.savefile.com/files/1113432

Fifth, when I press the X button like what I would do on windows for anything else, the music keeps playing, and when I try to reopen it, it says Torque is still running, it then shuts it off.

Sixth, not really a bug, but Brother Michael's white text (not in the dialogue box) against the white overlay with the white background in the white church is a bit hard to read.

Seventh, (really awesome screenshot) the Verse isn't displayed in Fullscreen mode here anyways. Seen, http://www.savefile.com/files/1113463

Eighth, It'd be really nice if you clarified what buttons were for taking screenshots ingame. A simple control binding would work.

Ninth, when using the GUI for selecting verses and changing combat modes, I have to select the bottom of the button as opposed to being able to select the top or middle.

Tenth, unless you have large resolutions, (it seems to change automatically, haven't figure out what triggers it yet.) there is places with extra space, and places where other things collide/overlap. Seen, http://www.savefile.com/files/1113487

You're right about the book not appearing I wasn't targeting.

It'd be nice if we could expand on our selected verses, by like typing it in, like when facing fear I wanted to type in, "the Lord didn't make us with a spirit of fear, but of love..." lol.

I love the look of the Deception evil spirit, looks great!

When me and my Brothers and sisters in Christ surround the enemy its fun pwning them.

Eleventh, to verify my claim of that there are 2 Michaels look at this, http://www.savefile.com/files/1113514

Using attribute points needs to be explained. I don't seem to be gaining any, I've got the Breastplate of Righteousness...

Twelve, when I'm zoomed in I can't see any words on the Bible! This a severe injuststice...

I'm hungry, so I'll be back to test some more.

Thanks Mene-Mene! That's a great list of things that should be fixed. Some that I have already noticed my self has been fixed but I check every other bug and consider the suggestions you made.
It's good to hear you like the game and actually had fun playing it.

Yes Sorry JeTSpice, this is for PC only. There might be linux version out for 0.5, if I can compile that for ubuntu, but no Mac version.

Mene-Mene , I'll try to answer your post in more detail now. (I forgot to answer the questions last time.)

I mean when you choose your prayer list, at the bottom it has a list of scriptures you can pray, and when you right-click it activates the one selected. The descriptions of them just seemed a bit vague.

I mean the bottom edge, I'm referring to on the bottom right of the screen, there are 2 buttons, one for toggleing between close, and far combat modes, and the other for selecting which verse you want to pray next. Both of those don't seem to work when I click them near the top edge, as opposed to clicking them near the bottom.

Okay, when I go into the game, and then anytime while I'm in the game if I press the X button, and then without changing stuff, (like minimizing, maximizing) and reclick on the Darkening Icon, it gives me an error that says Torque is still running, exiting now. And then everything is back to normal. However if I switch to say firefox, and then minimize it, it quits it. Whatever.... lol

Ok, it seems that some invisible gui is overlapping the button or something. When you had this problem was some of the gui controls overlapped like you showed in one screen shot?

Its fine in 960, as there is absolutely no overlap, however in 640x480, there is a small amount of overlap (just love over the messages box) and that causes problems. It works with whatever if you click the bottom edge. Ironicly, the rez I showed you in the overlap picture, 480x360. The Close/Far button works fine, but the verse selection button doesn't. Must be frustrating for you...

That's Ok Mene-Mene, because if it happens only in 480 x 360 then I just hope every one can play it on the higher resolutions.
The intented resolutions for this game and which I have tested it are: 640 x 480 , 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768

So I hope you are ok with that.

Edit: old download link removed

I hope there's all the bugs fixed which mene-mene's reported. Thanks MM!

Thanks for testing!
I just fixed two bugs and released 0.5.1 version. Thanks to Mene-Mene for reporting that picking up the scriptures did not give any attribute points.
Also the Bible button for countering arguments did not work.

Download

Yeah updater would be nice! I have been thinking about that and maybe I can get the one VoHW uses integrated to this.

I was just about to say that! I'm loving it. The smallest resolution causes problems with having a new game/loadgame in the main screen. http://www.savefile.com/files/1137621 shows that.

Anyway, on to playing...

Edit: Remember the old Dialogue problem with the others white on white? Well when my player prays, same problem happens.

Mene-Mene, what resolution is that?

Hmm the bubbles the player uses for prayer texts are green with white text, correct? But if you move mouse over them they will turn transparent. So maybe this is why they were hard to read?

arissa_nightblade, I hope you like it. I used TGE.

Jari, That's a great foundation for a game. Awesome!

Sometimes the dialog bubbles would be transparent green, but sometimes they would be white (I have no graphics card). A way I use to make sure that text is always visible is to but a black outline or shadow on the text, so if the background is dark, you can read the white text, but if the background is light, you can read the dark outline. Just an idea.

It's fun. Are there more levels than the cross-shaped sanctuary?

The tutorial went by a little quick. Is there a way that it can wait until I push a key or a mouse button before going on?

Great job.

I must never forget how amazed I have been of God's blessing to this project, that it's what it is now. Which I could not imagined to be able to do, but I prayed anyway and was surprised how well this game was developed.

I wonder if this is the same issue Mene-Mene had. Well I'll have to work on those text bubbles.

Hmm that must be the starting church, if you leave through the portals from the back of it in the middle you should be sent to first level. There are total of four levels plus the churches between.

Really, hmm. There should be two tutorial teachers and it should only go on when you do some action. For example when the teacher asks you to select praying verse it wont continue until you select a verse for praying.

Really awesome game!!!!!

I did notes two typos:
the Gaurdian says that the scripture is not for 'childs' and once there was a message that said 'Amy humbles himself'.

really good game!

Jari: 480x360. Perhaps that's my problem with moving my mouse over them. I'd suggest you check both forums as I had some issues there as well, but for your convienience:
quote:

Basically I've beaten the Guardian, and obtained the scripture, unfortunetly, where the next time my visit to the church is, instead I'm out there in the open grey area. Additionally, I don't seem to have memorized any scriptures. Proof and stuff is here: http://www.savefile.com/files/1137637

quote:

When ever i'm in a smaller resolution 480x360, or whatever, not all the resolution options appear, I have to first go to 1280x1024 before I can go to 1600x1200. I'm not sure if you know this.

JeTSpice: In a previous version he had little circles that looked like stickers to represent it. It's pretty much directly across from where you start.

Cool. I'll check it out again. I'm on a laptop which spontaneously clicks stuff, so that probably was the trouble with the tutorial.

Jari, you have awesome English. I hope to learn another language some day, too. In the beginning screen, a button is labled "not works." Perhaps "doesn't work"

You said you need some GUI graphics. I might be able to help there. Is there an example on the internet you could show me? Or perhaps you'd like me to look for examples of GUI's?

Mene-Mene, ok thanks, I'm responding in the other forums.

arissa_nightblade, yep it uses A* for pathfinding.

JeTSpice, yeah it would be great if you could do some UI graphics! Hmm I'm not sure of an example in the internet, it would be good if you could look because you already seem to know what to look for.
Have you done GUI for TGE before? I could make a list of the image files that contain the current UI graphics, if that is needed.

btw, that "not works" confusion was funny.

Yes, Jari, if you can send a list of files, picture sizes, etc., that will help. I've not worked with TGE but I did some GUI and saw how it was adapted for TGB. The picture sizes will help.

Ok thanks JeTSpice.

You see this target window that popups when you target an evil spirit or a brother:

Well I think that needs most of the work atm.

To change that the gui could be replaced with a single image/bitmap, that would be simplest. Oh and please ignore those black texts, they are left over from debugging.

If you have any suggestions on this please say... Or with rest of the UI graphics.
To view all the graphics (if you wish) see folder where the game is installed /darkening/client/ui . There's files like "memIconframe.png"
and "gameWindow.png". The later has the current window pieces that target window uses. And the first has the background for party members.

And when I said that new graphics are needed it was before I actually worked on new GUIs my self. But everything is redoable. (Though I like the style of somethings like the brother icons)

But please pick up anything you want when can talk about that more. But if it seems difficult to make new guis it ok, creating new ui graphics for torque isnt actually too easy if you work on the windows pieaces etc.

God bless.

Thanks JeTSpice. Those look good but will they suite the otherwise blue gui? It can also be simple.
I think it needs to be good background for the text for displaying name. And some space is needed for two bars.
And there's also lock icon for displaying wheater the target is locked or not.

Btw there's actually folder called armorOfGod that needs completely new icons, for the full armor of God.
But you don't have to do anything you don't want to, I'm just list what needs to be redone the most.

God bless.

With the way the Torque GUI does its graphics, if we want those to be sizeable windows/panels, some of those would work and some of them wouldn't.

Referring to the six images in the order of:
0 1 2
3 4 5

Images 0 and 4 are the only ones I could see working as translating well into a Torque GUI graphic. The other ones (1, 2, 3, 5) would probably work best as static, fixed-sized window graphics. I don't know if you have the window graphic handy that we made for Exegesis, but that might help you see how it works for resizable window/panel images.

Thanks HanClinto. For that reason mentioned, it's simplest to just use a single image which works since the target window doesn't need to be resized.
Sorry for not saying this before!

Okay. Jari, will either 0 or 4 work? If not, let me know and I'll re-do. I think you're saying that a single image will work for the targeting window. But maybe you'll have other windows later and want them all to look the same throughout the game?

I see your armour icons. I'll make something for those.

The number 4 would be the best because the borders are thing (need to save some space).

I think it's ok to have just one single consistent image for now. If I need to make multiple windows then I can edit it and make it pieces.
