Hi guys. I'd like to join the Pyweek 4 (http://www.pyweek.org/4/) competition and would like to form a team.I don't have to lead either .
Here are some details on the competition, the rest you can find out from pyweek.org:
Friday 2007/03/02	Registration underway
Sunday 2007/03/25 Theme voting commences
Sunday 2007/04/01 Challenge start
Sunday 2007/04/08 Challenge end, judging begins
Sunday 2007/04/22 Judging closes, winners announced

What the team will need:
1 Python "cowboy coder"
3 (at the most) additional Python coders.
1 character artist/animator
1 level/background designer/artist
1 sound designer
1 musician

I can fill the role of programmer, possibly level design, and (if you want me to) team leader.

I would be interesting in helping with sound. What exactly would be my role?

I might be able to do a thing or two in graphics, I don't know python of any sort, and am stuck with C++ and the Blitz Series.

Depending on what you're looking to do in this project, I might be able to help with programming. I'm also a musician, and, if my style is what you want, then I could do some composition for you. For an example of my specialty, check out "Fall of Elven Snow" on my PureVolume: http://www.purevolume.com/overlookedidenty

Anyway, I'm not exceptionally skilled in Python, but I could pick it up if necessary. Actually, I should probably pick it up anyway (especially with how much it's used on this forum).

The project would need looping music and sound effects.

It all depends on the theme. Whatever theme is chosen, I think the game should be as simple as possible, and yet be fun. For instance, we don't have to save levels or have online play or even online scores.

Very nice. I like that style. However the game will probably need a slightly cheesy music theme.

You don't have to be skilled. I noticed your explanation on the Bible Dave question that tonyx raised and it proves you know a bit. I wasn't very skilled in python when I started the majority of programming on Bible Dave either. Python is pretty easy to pick up.

It would be nice if you were to join us. Could I see a sample of your work?
EDIT: The game will require a lot of transparency in the images and the format should be in png (for best results).

For just a one week competition, overlapping or contradictory work can seriously hamper rapid development of a game, this would be the dream team:

1 python "cowboy coder"
1 character artist/animator
1 level/background designer/artist
1 sound designer
1 musician

Maybe I'll grab Cohort X, and see if we can't bang out a game in a week. Maybe my wife will actually think this is a good idea, and let me spend every free second working on the game, like she did with the CCN competition.

I think you're right about overlapping work steveth.

Well, CPU, let me know if you want me to contribute somehow. I agree with steveth, though, so don't try to get too many people working on this project. As such, I don't think I'm going to be your best choice for any of the necessary roles, but if you want my work, I'll do what I can.

Here's some Text: http://www.savefile.com/files/535790
Here's a background I did: http://www.savefile.com/files/535795

I can't load what I want right now, so the links aren't there, but I'll get them up.
Both for WOB my main graphical game, I've got a Little bit of 3d experience, but not a ton, most of my work is 2d. I'll only do a thing here and there anyways.

What the team will need:
Programmers
Graphics people
Sound People (not absolutely needed, but it would help to have them)

I can fill the role of programmer and (if you want me to) team leader.

Sounds interesting - I have written 3 games using pygame but have not touched it in a year. - so I don't know how well my skills have survived.

I can do some art stuff - again I am not phenominal - I'm ok.

Now sound that's a whole other thing - I am totaly musically declined and am worthless except to say (maybe - that's not to bad).

Although I do have a mic and would be willing to help build sound effects.

Now with the Ludrum dare I was in once I knew the list of possible topics - I came up with a game idea for all of the suggestions (over 200+) I read my first book on game design theory in 1982 - and even have a pen and paper RPG that is probably 75% the way towards being publishable.

Would love to help were I could. Not a team leader, maybe supportive artis, or supportive programmer.

Words of wisdom from an older coder. You're right. I'll change my list to match yours. I would recommend at a max of 2 other programers though (and we divide the job up into UI, Game, AI, etc)

I'll see what mastallama has to say about what kind of sound he could do (since my list was vague in that subject) and sign you up as a programmer for now.

Ok. Sounds good. I'll wait to see Mene's style before I write you up as artist or programmer. If no one else can do the sfx, then we may need you to help in that area too.

Oh, be sure to read the Competition's conditions: http://media.pyweek.org/static/conditions.html

And the rules: http://media.pyweek.org/static/rules.html

You can register for Pyweek 4 at: http://www.pyweek.org/register/

I recommend that any one of you create a Pyweek account so that we can create an entry in a few days.

I hope you're not expecting me to be a lead programmer. Like I said, I'm a far cry from amazing, but I'll do what I can. (I'm making sure I have the latest builds of Python and PyGame installed right now.)

Regarding audio, I have the ability to make music using the NES hardware. Well... an emulation of the NES hardware. I don't know that you'll want chiptunes, but I could make it happen. I'm not an amazing foley artist, but I could theoretically make some sound effects in a bind.

Anyway, it's back to downloading the latest versions of Python and PyGame. By the way, I'm a mac user, but I don't that will be a problem with Python/PyGame.

EDIT: I created a user account on PyWeek. Xian Lee is the name I went with, if it matters.

EDIT2: You're thinking a 2D game here, right? OpenGL is still out of my league.

I can do little cheesy midi stuff (real good at that) or some piano or guitar (no where near as good as Ken on guitar) stuff. If Xian_Lee has what you're looking for then grab him up, don't think you have to pick me because I posted first.

I might be able to help, I do looping tracks, etc. I can't get the pyweek site to open???? probably a connection error on the computer I am at. I have some real busy weeks coming up, but simple loops of SFX would not be a problem. I can give you output in any format you would like. As far as art, I do a little of that too, but I have the King of the Blues contest coming up that will ultimately be my primary focus.

Afterthought: You may want to have a couple SFX, sound, and art designers, that you could either split tasks, or replicate tasks and pick the best of the submissions.

Alright, we've got:
Programmers:
Xian_Lee
2Bros
Me

Sound FX:
2Bros
samw3

Music:
Mastallama (for the cheesy midi stuff)
Xian_lee
kenman

Graphics:
Mene-Mene (still waiting on those images though)
kenman

@Mene: I'll just take your word (not that I don't believe you, I just wanted to see your syle) if you can do character design and/or draw it as well as being a artist for the levels, that would be great.

This list is not final.

It looks like you're getting a pretty big team here, CPU. It looks like a lot more audio-inclined people are here than I realized. Don't worry about using me for audio. If you've got enough people for programming, don't worry about using me for that either.

I'm really busy, and not sure if I'll have time to work on a PyWeek project (I know I'd love to), but if nothing else I may be able to provide SVN hosting, as a good friend of mine just set me up with my own server. I got my first SVN repo set up today, and wouldn't mind setting one up for the CCN pyweek project.

Well, CPU, I've been trying to work with Python/PyGame in my spare time, and I think that it would be in your best interest to find another programmer. I'm going to keep at it, but if someone more experienced is able to help you, then I'd recommend taking that help. It looks like animating sprites is going to be my biggest challenge. Using BibleDave as a reference, I see how most everything else works, but animating sprites is still curious.

Bible Dave animates sprites in a weird way IMO. I suggest you take a look at solar wolf. www.pygame.org/shredwheat/solarwolf/

Well, I went working on some more of the sprite tutorials last night, and it was making more sense. I still think that you would be better off with a more experienced programmer, but I'm a little more confident in my ability to pick up and develop now.

EDIT: I am still going to make myself as available as possible for PyWeek. It seems like my current trouble with Python is figuring out how to use arrays for storing the frames of an animation.

What's the latest PyWeek team look like, CPU?

Do you happen to have ideas for any of the possible themes? I saw the one that was something like "the only way to go is up" or something, and I thought "Ice Climbers!"

Anyway, I was just wondering what the latest was.

I believe I posted that my login name on the PyWeek site is "Xian Lee".

So long as you're not depending on me to do the core of the programming, I'm quite alright with what you have me down for.

You can get some practice. There's really no way to cheat because they haven't released the theme yet.

Cohort X and I are also going to be participating in Pyweek 4. We are going to create a simple Python binding for Irrlicht 1.3. I'm going to create a simple class that does most of the initialization stuff, and just create some low-level functions and wrap that using Boost::Python. In fact, I've already done a test run of this and got it working, loading models, and playing different animations. What's nice about Irrlicht 1.3 is that with the .b3d model format it supports animations with weighted vertices or "skinning." The guy who added that support also made a nice .b3d exporter for Blender which we have tested and working.

CPU, it looks like you guys have a crack team. BTW, what is your team name? I couldn't find it on this page anywhere. Cohort and I are competing under the team name "Self Defense Against Fresh Fruit." It's the name of a Monty Python sketch.

With any luck, the two CCN teams can sweep the awards and bring a little glory to God as well as promote CCN. If you haven't voted for themes, I'd like to promote "The Final Countdown"--a slightly cheesy, but definitely awesome song by the band Europe.

Good luck!

I haven't brought that topic up yet, but now that you mention it, we should think up a name. Any ideas other than "CCN Team"?

Hahaha! I saw that on the list and had a good laugh. Never expected it to be you.

I have a couple songs on my PureVolume that *may* be useful, but it's not likely that they will be suitable for the project. Overlooked Identity is the name of my musical project. You can get to it through that link, and through a link on my GooglePages portal.

Thanks for the login details guys. I think the team name should be a witty. funny, or clever name, but not one that sounds steryotypically christian (if you know what I mean).

2Bros: I understand the time restraints, 1 hour a day (approx) would be a great help.

Clint: We could use the svn server details. I know how busy you've been, so if you're unable to set us up with accounts by Thursday/Friday I'll create some accounts on my server.

Anyone: Any links to sound or artwork that is free to use would be great.

Name ideas (for the record, I tend to make up things on the spot, so some of these may be really out there):
"Chain Mail and Chain Letters" <- I might use that as a song title at some point, I kind of like the name.
"Left, Right, B, A, Start" <- The end of the legendary "Konami Code"
"Tastes Unlike Chicken" <- Don't ask me where that came from because I just don't know.
"First Reality" <- Same here.
"Beyond Boundaries" <- And here.
"Exit Stage Right" <- It continues.
"Curtain Call" <- Even more.
"Kingless Crowns" <- Reversal of the LoTR reference to "the crownless shall again be king." I think I might use that as a song title as well.

Hmm. I'm sorry. I don't know that any of these names are great for a team name. I got some song titles out of the deal, but that doesn't exactly help the team.

Tastes Unlike Chicken and Exit Stage Right sound pretty good.Of the two, I favor the Chicken one the most.

Okay, I'll see what I can do. How many accounts do you want? One for each person on the task list?

Tastes Unlike Chicken, huh?

I liked D-SIPL's Gang of 6, or Band of 6 (similar to Band of Brothers). The contest draws ever nearer.

Thanks for the help, HanClinto!

Sorry for the delay getting back

KOTB is over for me, I flopped in the first round. Pyweek is good for me as my family is out on vacation for the first part of that week and could definitely contribute a significant amount of time.

Just a thought for musicians:
All music should be in a set format for what the coders want. The coders should set this request. I am cool with whatever you will want.

If the musicians want to use something like sonar, do they have to make the source files available. If so, if I am using 15 - 20 tracks, my source files can be over 1GB.

For art or graphics. Are you looking at 2d or will you be looking for 3d. If so, what file type will you be looking for. It would be good for me to ensure that all of my exporting type stuff works good.

CPU look forward to having you lead us to victory!

Just so nobody gets caught off guard, according to the countdown timer on Pyweek.org, the contests starts Saturday evening for us North Americans, so 5 pm on the west coast and and 8 pm on the east coast. That's when the final theme is given and the contests starts. You guys should agree on a chat system to use. I believe there is a CCN IRC channel, so you could use that to "meet" at certain times to discuss details and divvy up responsibilities.

Yes please, although I think our team will be smaller than that on the list.

Great!

Getting to that . OGG or Wav format would be nice. I've found that for looping music tracks, wav is better (but the file size is HUGE!). If you can't create an ogg file, I can.

As far as I know, Pyweek rules don't say that you have to release the source for music created during the competition.

We're doing 2d.

Png, Psd, or Xcf would be nice. Preferably Png.

Gang of 6 is a good one too. I'd recommend that if we don't have a name soon.

EDIT: Those who have a Pyweek account, please vote for a theme at: http://pyweek.org/p/6/

The themes to choose from are:
The only way is up
Underneath the radar
One way or another
Don't stop till you get enough
The final countdown

I have created a team, with the current name: "Gang of 6". The name (but not the URL) can be changed before the competition. D-SIPL and Kenman, when you register, please give me your account name so that I can add you two to the roster.
