Maybe it's custom, like you get to pick how much memory? EDIT: Ok, I clicked on continue and it brought me to this site: http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/cto_dimene520?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs It seems like you get to pick depending on what package you get. ------------------ [This message has been edited by LAVA (edited November 07, 2006).] |

It's the 5th one down, right below Video Cards. It goes from: Processor\Display ------------------ |

Save your money and get something half decent. In addition, quad core and directx 10 video cards will be out within the next couple of months. |

Laptop or Desktop? If Laptiop look at the Inspiron 830(?). I can't say for myself but it looks pretty nice for the price. (Cheapest I could find) as for Desktop, Mac Mini. ------------------ |

Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3000... Gah! By the time you buy an actual video card and get a decent amount of RAM for games, you'll double the base price of the system. Just my memory doubled the price of everything overall that I put into my game rig. |

You can upgrade to a gig very cheaply, that's what I did. Bought the computer with 512MB and then after a few months got another 512MB stick for about 30 bucks. |

Allow me to correct myself, I just held a quad core and 8800GTX right now. If you have $700 now you should save it until after Christmas where you'll get some Christmas money (maybe) and the prices will start to drop. You could probably get a quad core system, 8800gt, 2gb of ram, etc. for around $1400 and it would last you alot longer than a entry level dual core with onboard video. |

I would suggest avoiding pre-built desktop systems, especially Dell. Dell tends to use non-standard motherboard/power supplies. So, if your power supply goes out after the warranty, you have to buy an overpriced one from Dell, same goes for the motherboard, unless you want to get a new power supply, too. Laptops work a little differently, since you can't really build your own. Dell and a couple other companies that do the highest quantity of laptop sales generally have the best deals on smokin' laptops--like 1/2 the price of smaller companies for comparable machines. I bought a laptop about a year or so ago (from Dell, $1300 on sale from $2100), and I don't think I could live without one now. I sit in a recliner in my living room and work on my computer with my feet up. You just can't do that with a desktop system. Plus, I can take it with me, anywhere, and just about everywhere has wifi. Another thing, buying a pre-built desktop means paying the Microsoft tax. Dell will not allow you to buy a computer without paying for some version of Windows XP. Besides, I'm annoyed with Windows Vista hype. XP is probably the last Windows OS I'll use personally (work is different). Linux beat Microsoft to shipping 3D-accelerated desktops. Of course, Apple beat them both by a large margin. I've been wanting to get a Mac ever since I've been exposed to OS X. ------------------ [This message has been edited by steveth45 (edited November 08, 2006).] |

quote: Steve, I'm right there with you. Last week we were given a gift of a brand new Macbook Pro -- it's pretty sweet. It's my wife's new laptop, and I think I can say with a good amount of certainty that I *really* want one of those for my next laptop. They're amazing. And especially with the availability of things like VMWare and Parallels Desktop, then I don't see any reason to stay tied to XP as my host operating system. Especially when you start seeing blog posts about even doing Visual Studio development in it -- it's just too cool. So yeah. We were trying to get one of the new HP laptops (because they're one of the few major manufacturers you can buy a new laptop from without paying the Microsoft Tax), but they were too back-ordered to get one before Thanksgiving. So we went with Apple, and I think I can safely speak for the both of us when I say that we're extremely pleased with it. But yeah. They're definitely out of the $500-$700 price range. A Mac Mini would be a good buy for RM methinks, except that it doesn't have dedicated graphics, so I've heard it's not really great for gaming. But then again, most of the budget desktops he'd be looking at would probably have integrated video, so maybe it's not that out of the question. Cheers! --clint |

So Clint, that means that you could technically now use Mac for designed a heavily hardware acceleration/DirectX reliant game, just like you could with a regular PC, on Mac? ------------------ Portia The Merchant of Venice |

rm, i know you don't know much about computer hardware, but have you ever though about upgrading you old case. like gettinga new motherboard, ram, cpu, and video card. you can reuse your old hardrive, os, cd drives, etc...if you have standard atx/matx case. then for $600-$800 you could have a really nice machine me thinks. anywho, just figured i'd throw that option out there. ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |
