Registration should be online this week! Please be praying for the conference, attendees, those that can't attend, the industry in general, etc. |

@Clint: Yeah, you too . @Reaml: Right on, RM. Though you don't need a game idea to go to the CGDC. I went last year mainly as a viewer. LOL, and eater of food. ------------------ Tired of loosing your work for all eternity? Jesus Saves! hrm...who actually plans this conference? Do they plan the date in more advance than 2 months? I realize that 2 months may seem like a long time for some people, but I need a little more advanced notice than that if I'm to travel 1/2 an America away. I don't think I'll be coming this year ------------------ |

I wanted to go to one, and a friend and I are planning to roadtrip up to oregon, washingington and canada( a test roadtrip for one we'll do around the nation). since we live in CA, it's not too far. but, unfortunately, that convention is during my finals week so I won't be able to make it ------------------ |

There are about 70 registered now. We can offer scholarships for the registration fees. In rare cases, we can cover dorm fees. It would be difficult to cover travel, especially for our Australian brothers! If you can't attend, please pray that it be HIS conference. Thanks so much, ------------------ |

"It would be difficult to cover travel, especially for our Australian brothers!" I hear that :P I live in Queensland, Australia ( go Gold Coast ) Lol, I'm hoping to come round next year. 70 ppl!! Thats great! Tim: I'm thinking of getting together with some mates I know who are christians and interested in Game/Software Development, any helpful information about ideas and things as such would be greatful. Please send them to dartsman AT hotmail.com. I was thinking something along the lines of "Get-Together's" such as bbq's, hanging out at ppl's places, beach runs, etc. And possibly getting together to work on a game, but mainly to be a supporting group for all the people, and hopefully to network people to get them into game development. ------------------ |

Yeah, I'll be sure to bring my digital camera along... ..Oh man, actually I just remembered that I still haven't posted all the pics from last year. Thats so late O.O. I'll have to do that before I go so people can see their pics. ------------------ Tired of loosing your work for all eternity? Jesus Saves! Hey all! Well, I'm here at the CGDC and writing this post from the expo hall. Left Behind Games is setting up their HUGE banner about 20 feet behind me, and there are a couple of other people who have set up and people are socializing, talking, and some (like me) are anxiously trying to finish stuff up to present. I'm giving the first workshop in the programming track tomorrow, and I'm seriously out-gunned by people like Steve Goss and Ben Garney (who is one of the more lead engine developers for GarageGames) who will be giving similar presentations to me afterwards. Ah well, someone's got to break the ice. Looking forward to everything though! I think this will be a lot of fun -- I pray my laptop works well enough to last through the presentation (it's been flipping out a lot recently). I'll be writing more posts here as the conference progresses (as I'm sure other people will as well). Cheers! In Christ, |

Hey, I just remembered. GarageGames headquarters is not that far from where I live. I have to look for it sometime... Er, I wonder if they do tours. Haha, I guess they'd be more focused on their business than entertaining tourists. By the way, I'll be ariving there tomorrow morning. Cya then . Alright, it is 4:52am and I'm just about ready to go. I'm just sitting here in the command center (my bedroom) and double checking everything to make sure everything is ready to go. I'll be leaving from Eugene at 6:24am and arriving at Portland around 9:30am. This is really exciting . I'll be seeing everyone at the conference soon. P.S. Sry you won't be able to make it kiwii. Clint and I can keep you posted though, and I'm bringing my camera again . [This message has been edited by Ashton_JX (edited May 17, 2006).] |

Sorry about not posting any info during the conference. I can get kind of intimidated by carbon based life forms at times and was a little unsure about asking someone if I could use their laptop for going online. I'll share some of my experiences (and photos) soon . ------------------ Tired of loosing your work for all eternity? Jesus Saves! I'm sitting in the Portland airport, waiting to board my flight to go to Indianapolis where we'll drive to Ohio to visit my parents, then head back home around tomorrow night or something. I look forward to posting some of our pictures when we get back home. At the conference, I was in the first round of workshops where I presented on rapid game development with Python. It was intimidating teaching workshops alongside people like Ben Garney and Jonathan S. Harbour (both of whom are very cool and humble btw). Praise God it all turned out well and I think people were able to learn some good stuff from it. I went through creating a small, dinky platformer called Idol SMASH where one plays as a servant of King Asa who must go around the land breaking idols with a Smash-O-Stick (tm). It's pretty small, but if people go through it, it should really help them understand the principles of game development. You can find a writeup of it along with all of the source, my powerpoint and presentation notes right here: Yesterday Jennifer and I went with Charlie Mauck, John DeMargheriti, Scott Chen and his fiancee to go to a beachhouse on the Pacific. We had a great time exploring beaches, climbing rocks, getting soaked running from waves, and learning about wildlife from Charlie our tour guide. We had a really good time, and hopefully some of our pictures turned out well. Scott, John and Charlie all had cameras also, so I look forward to seeing stuff from them. Loads of fun! I'll post more stuff when I get back home. Cheers! In Christ, [This message has been edited by HanClinto (edited May 21, 2006).] |

So I, too, am sitting in Portland Airport waiting for my flight, which is delayed due to a malfunctioning de-icer switch that has to be flown in from Seattle.... Let's see here.... The conference was awesome. I appreciated that many of the talks focused on how to do things right, professionally. John de Margheriti, for example, gave a talk on Design Documents. Many others also mentioned the importance of having a complete design doc *before* production. It's not nailed in stone, of course, but it must be complete. De Margheriti demonstrated how one can use a wiki to house the design doc so that it can change and adapt as the project gets underway. I hadn't thought of doing one on a wiki before. That was pretty cool. Scott Wong gave a great talk on game design. I think my notebook is in my checked luggage, so I can't get to it right now. What I remember is that he advocated designing Christian games "from the inside out". You start with building and strengthening your personal relationship with Jesus. Then you lay out what you would like to accomplish with your game. Then, and only then, after you have determined this clearly, do you go on to the next one: the method for accomplishing your goals (your game's genre, premise, storyline, etc.) If you do it the other way around, which most amateurs do, you get a development process that looks like this (I'm making this example up): "I'm going to build the next World of Warcraft! Yeah, yeah, and it'll have 50 gajillion new weapons and these awesome special effects, like big exploding insect spacecraft that shriek as they explode. Hmm. To do that I'll have to use the Unreal 3 engine." "It'll be awesome! It'll be a genre-crossing masterpiece! It'll be a FPS RTS MMORPG with lots of cool puzzles!" "Hmm....WoW, exploding insect spacecraft, Unreal 3 engine - ooh, and a sweet backstory, like, um, the AntiChrist has unleashed these alien insect spaceships that are DEMONIC (thus the shrieking) - yeah, Revelation talks about those, right?" "Cool, so then when the insect spaceships explode, it'll flash Bible verses on the screen, and then it'll be a Christian FPS RTS MMORPG puzzle game." See? You get involved in "featuritis" and you don't have a focus, and you never really get to thinking hard about the message and really seeking to glorify God through the medium of games. It's also a recipe for an unfinished game. It was good to see Ashton_JX and steveth45, and all the other really cool people we met last year. ------------------ |

Haha, coolj. I think that in that situation the game wouldn't even get a 10th of a percent completed. Those design docs are vital. @ Clint & Tonnyx: Heya guys . I got home on the 19th (I got a ride with Steven -creator of the ninja robot attack- haha ) Sounds like you guys had lots of fun at the beach. Find any shells? Looking forward to reading your posts on the CGDC06. I may just post mine around the same time. Kinda swamped with schoolwork ATM... er..
