Hi all,

For nearly 6 years now (can you believe it????) Christian Coders Network as been around. It's time for a face-lift for many reasons:

1) I've gotten a dedicated server complex for my other ventures, and therefore need to move this site away from its current locale.
2) UBB is antiquated...big time. As soon as one of Krylar's Kreations developers finishes up on a project he's currently on, I'm going to have him focus on building a forum system that will be used for all our products, and CCN will have it too.
3) The current articles and showcase code will also be redone.

...don't worry, I don't plan to nuke CCN, but rather make it more useful for folks. This process, though, will take time and there will be some hiccups on the way.

Step 1 will be moving the entire site over, as is, to my new complex and then flipping the DNS accordingly. When this is in process, you will see that the messageboards are inaccesible for a couple of days. I ask you for you patience during this time. This step will be happening within the next week or so.

Subsequent steps are likely a couple of months away.

Thanks!

Hi all,

It's going to take time to do stuff, obviously. Mostly I don't want to goof anything up! hehehe Anyways, I've got some plans for stuff and want to really get it designed out correctly before I start the team working on it.

I think a lot of the design elements are already tested from BlitzCoder days, it's just a matter of refreshing and updating, but there are a few new features that I think will greatly improve things.

Anyways, this is still in design as the developer I'd like to have work on this is currently engaged in another project. You know how these things go, too, sometimes what you want to work on and what you have to work on turn out to be two different things. So I'm trying to make the projects that will benefit this site also benefit other avenues for my business so that I can afford to keep things like CCN alive! Kind of an everyone-wins situation.

All the best!

Some advice:

1. Please PLEASE do not switch to a fixed-width website. While some sites such as ZDNet are doing it, the websites that have spent real dollars on research on usability (amazon.com, microsoft.com) are not. And for good reasons: Monitors come in all shapes, sizes, and resolutions. There never has been, and still are no, good reasons to used fixed width websites.

2. Frames are old fasioned now. They were cool, but I guess as long as you're updating, go ahead and drop the frames.

3. Good luck on your mission. Should you fail, we will disavow all knowledge of you and CCN and secretly submit your webpage to the Daily Sucker on Vincent Flander's webpage.

4. Some other tips: No fixed-size fonts (same reason as no fixed-width pages), no opening links in new windows, even third party links (kills the "back" button on browsers).

Jakob Neilson has some good tips, plus it has links to some of his other articles on usability.

Many of them don't concern CCN, and I have every confidence in your abilities - CCN is actually pretty well-designed right now .

Good points

Frames are planned to go bye-bye, yep, and also it'll be a skinnable interface that we build, so the user will be able to make determinations as to what they want for the interface (at least to some degree).

I'm also planning on making the skin-format available to a select few who can build some additional skins that can be used by all the sites that house the system, so there should be sufficient selections to choose from in the long run.

Thanks again

Cool. I look forward to seeing it .

Five years since I joined, has it really been that long? Time really seems to fly sometimes.

Great! Change for change sake isn't the best in my book but even though I love the current design.. it seems you'll be making your own design, right?

Nice to know you're not going to nuke it! CCN has been around for 6 years.. hope it triples that!

The design could use a clean up, the forums overhaul will be great, make sure image posing and uploads are options you can add if you like. Also image imbedding in the least, so that we can post images from external links. Clickable links, bbc code, and all the goodies.

For the web site, be sure to use CSS, its a life saver. Also try and clean it up so that less space is wasted and maybe go for a little lighter look, the dark gives a sort of negative taste, and if feels old and clunky. But hey the content is what matters and you guys have that nailed, so I don't think it will matter what you do. Just my 2 cents.

If you want a new logo, or any other graphics work I would be more than happy to help with the face lift. Jeff

Thanks for all the suggestions/feedback. CSS is already planned for the new layout, hence the ability to make skins and such.

Don't want anyone getting too excited just yet though, as the developer that'll be on this project is still neck-deep in his current one. But he'll be moving into this as soon as possible. I would guess the coding will start in about a month or so. We'll probably not see any changes here for a number of months though, as I don't want to cause major interruption.

So you'll end up seeing another of these topics and it'll be more like "CCN CHANGING!" hehe That should give it away!

Thanks again for all the well wishes and offers to help.

Heya Jeff! Did you forget your password, change your email or want a differnt username?

I kinda liked "outcast" better than "guategeek" anyway.

I guess I lost my Pass. The 3 that I have didn't work, and I never put anything else so I have no clue what it would be. Also I couldn't find a retreave your password option, and its been so long its probably on my ASDworld email that went kuplunk a year or so ago so even if there was, No go. But its good to be back Jeff
