There are 5 phases that repeat:

1. all black
2. to fill as first lights go in
3. to part black as last lights go in and first lights leave the center
4. to fill as first lights pass last lights
5. to black as last lights leave center and finally exit the applet
1. all black, etc.,

Each light goes in and then traces its steps to go out. I didn't intend wierdness, but sadness somewhere along the route is perhaps appropriate.
