If it was a "breeze" then programmers wouldn't be paid so much, now would they?

Yeh hang in there.

I found it really hard. I had the passion to learn, but passion alone wasn't enough. It took perseverance as well, when it seemed that i wasn't learning anything, i would plod on. Push myself, set myself realistic goals.

By the end of this week i want to be able to write an app that displays a cross in, i dunno 4 different colours or something for example. Then just built upon that. It takes time, but stick in there.

yep dip-l is right

don't try to make your first programming project a game
make little projects, that you can feel rewarded aas you acheive, with each project pushing a little further, using a few new techniques of the language, few more problems to solve etc.

Hang in there, hardwork and patience are two things that are really important when it comes to programming (and lots of other things too). Yeah and as the others said, it's good to start on a small project first, and then make your way up to larger things.

God Bless!

That does bring up a good point ArchAngel. if you don't reguarly practice whilst your learning you will find yourself having to constantly refresh your memory on things like syntax etc.

So try and practice reguarly, and don't get dis-heartened. And remember if you ever need help with anything, let us know. We are not the type of community that will flame you and call you a n00b.

We are all nice people!

I'll echo the "stick around" message. Everyone has different levels of experience, but that doesn't stop us from participating here with each other and helping each other out - in fact that's one of the reasons this board is so good.

What type of programming are you interested in doing? Do you have any preferences for what programming language you want to start with? We're here to help...

Meshes? 3D isn't really the place to start for a beginner. Start simpler, start with commandline stuff, then perhaps simple 2D. Don't try 3D until you really get comfortable with the language and making simple games with it.

BTW, we've all had times when things get tough - debugging is probably one of the hardest things I do as a programmer. I remember recently doing some Java programming, and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why my program couldn't read the files I had written properly. Turns out Java doesn't read the closing block of PNG images, so I had to flush the remaining junk manually to get the next item. Very frustrating - it was very difficult to figure out, nowehere in the manuals or anywhere in the Java websites was it mentioned.

So, yeah, we all have our hard times. But hey, we make it through them, even when things get tough.

I've been there mate. I took a couple of years to learn Turbo C, then tried to graduate to C++ for a few years as well. Finally managed to get a simple 2D tank combat game written, but it was such a miserable experience for me, I gave up.
Thankfully, time has been kind to aspiring game developers and you can at least have fun using some of the easier tools like GameMaker, Blitz, and DarkBasic...So if you really feel like giving up, at least give these tools a look first. I found that they bring the fun aspect back to programming, for me anyway.

I'm Thinking of making a text MMORPG because I know the process will be faster than AOTC or judgment I tried AOTC and I was very suprised at how little progress they had made!

an MMORPG? wow. that's a quite a project.

how much experience do you have with game creation and coding?
or, how many games have you made?

I've heard somewhere (probably here) that your first 10 games will suck.
not to discourage you, but some advice.
smaller projects usually first, then build up.
that's why I'm only making a 2d arcade shooter(with GameMaker) it's small... haha.

I only have a few problems, like how to link all the players up without a host and how to make questions and as I stated before preesing a key to exit.
