Hi guys, BlazeQ suggested I drop by from the CGA forums. I got a couple of things going, one is a game that is finished in RF (Genesis3D shell):

http://www.newrev7.com

and the other is a game that I am just starting to pull together, check out the blog here:

http://www.newrev7.com/indexblog.html

(Now if there are any coders out there I might need someone to talk me through recompiling RF with a change in the Genesis source code to get rid of a timer error...)

GOOD TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOU GUYS!!!

Hey Marty, welcome! You're probably the only person here who uses RF, or genesis for that matter. I reckon RF is awesome though, and vastly underused for amateur game making. I have played around with it, but I've not cracked open the source at all. The main reason I didn't embrace RF was the lack of multiplayer support. I believe the commercial version of RF know offers extremely limited MP support, but I think it's not exactly interactive mp, just lets you see each other?
Fun looking screenies on your site! btw, you were born again, the year I was born...

I'm doing some serious consideration of moving over to Torque just for the multiplayer. That was one of the glitches with Genesis that just hasn't been resolved yet. Eternal Warriors game uses Quake 2 or one so multiplayer is built in. Catechumen and Dark Horizons uses the Genesis engine (don't know if THEY got it fixed yet). I spent a lot of time with 3DGS but had to move on just to kill bugs I was getting.

Besides I like the new look I put on stuff. More my voice instead of a "me too" sort of game. What's everyone using for development?

I use 2 different tools: Blitz3D, and GameMaker. GameMaker is just sooo good for 2D stuff, it's amazing. BTW, I recently stumbled across another free 3D engine that has potential, it's called CUBE, and it has some amazing features, it's also some form of community license so you can hack it and specialize the source however you like.
It also has multiplayer support, and one of the coolest features ever, cooperative real time editing!! How it works, is you start a multiplayer game, and then everyone who joins can switch into edit mode (on the fly, takes milliseconds), and then can deform the terrain, add enemies, props, triggers etc (all your map building stuff) from within the gameplay...cooperatively!! It's an amazing feature!
It's got a few rough corners here and there, and the sample game doesn't look as pretty as the torque demo, but well worth a look www.cubeengine.com is the link I think.

CUBE is really cool. I'd really like to get to know how to use it and stuff.
and for the Genesis3d engine, I've never seen it used as well as N
lightning did on Catechumen and Ominous Horizons. it's an old engine, but they did a great job. also, a freeware game called G-sector was pretty good.

Yep. I would switch to it in a flash, if it had one more feature: Cooperative multiplay (as opposed to cooperative editing). I'm not interested in making FPS shooters, but there is a real need for more cooperative FPS, and I'd like to do something about that, one day.

got gamemaker, and I have to say the same thing, it's just too sweet for 2D work, just started messing with it. Yes, its A4, A5, and A6 (although I never got into A6). Have to look into Blitz a bit more...

and you found a4,a5 to be really buggy?
i haven't played with either seriously, but have looked over them , and on the surface they look good - like excellent for a small team, beginner, but if they are buggy then its no good.

for ME they were all buggy, I will tell you what happened (and a better programmer might have NOT had this happen.) I spent some real bucks (for me) about 200 to enter the IGF competition. I had a Christian entry and the secular one "Bad Medicine". Bad Medicine made it pretty far but I kept on getting emails from judges that said it was missing stuff. Now this is stuff that was supposed to be resourced when you published.

That was a simple game. Then in Rev 7, I had weapons disappearing from level to level, sound issues and the story went on and on. So I just made up my mind to move on over to Genesis (RF). I needed something bulletproof and for dummies. Now I have flying enemies, melee enemies and a configurable menu. Plus it almost does RPG (look for "Pierre's Nightmare" for a good example).

Now all this might have changed with A6 and the redo of the templates. But I had to get out of Dodge City. One of the guys that does the AUM magazine is a really neat Christian from Romania, George Pirvu. Write him, try out their demo.

(by the way, Reality Factory is FREE, there is a pro version on CD for 99 clams but everything I did was done with the free version. And if you are into game development look for this book "Survival Guide for Indie Game Development" From Charles River. Here's one nugget, day old technology is your best friend, Eternal Warriors Shadows of Light (or whatever its called) I believe is done in Quake 2 or 1 which is GNU public domain, Catechumen is done in Genesis, also FREE (so long as you keep their logo).

Welcome aboard. I use RF as well for all my proto-typing...currently working on a massive 3rd person game centered around spirital warfare. You will find these guys here great...keep asking questions and they will be there for you. BTW I found a sweet free engine called Irrlicht...type it into search and you will find the link posted the other day. Not so good if you can't program though...I'm a designer/artist so RF is great for me. Sooner or later I will need to move on though. Best of luck to you.

Hey RC, got any samples/demos of what you've done with RF?
