They are right. If it's your first game, do yourself a favor and make it a simple one. I went 2 years without making a game because I tried to make the big one. Then I read this: http://www.gamedev.net/reference/design/features/makegames/default.asp Now I did alot of demos, so I skipped Tetris and went to Breakout. I'm looking into a 2D or 3D side scroller next and skipping Pac Man, and that's only because I have a book on Role Playing Games. Don't let the big one be your first one. Just my advice. ------------------ |

Hey, if you want to see simple, download my Breakage game. That was my first game and it's breakout of all games. Even though it is what it is, I'm very proud of it, and you feel alot better when you finish your first game. You feel like you have taken a big step. Even if it's just pong. It's a game. Good luck. If you use C++ DirectX, feel free to post questions and I will try to help if you get stuck somewhere. . ------------------ |

I agree with starting off simple, but I don't think that everyone should follow the article's suggestion of making Tetris, Breakout, Pac, and Mario. Will those be good for learning and building skills? Yes. Has the author of the article created a logical path? Yes. But you may want to weigh your desire for learning and practice versus time spent and achievement. (And creativity.) There are a zillion clones of all these games, so that another one is not very valuable unless there's something different about it. If you just want to educate yourself and don't mind about creating another one of the same old thing, okay. But there are two other options: (1) Make a game *similar* to one of the suggestions, but with some fundamental differences. Either a twist on the game, or an entirely different game in the maze genre. (Think about the differences between PacMan and Mr. Do or Labyrinth.) (2) Make a totally different game that you think will require about the same skills to make as the suggestion. Decide what requirements you want to tackle (the article had some good examples of the challenges at each level) and think of a game that fits the requirements but doesn't need too much beyond them. Either of those ways (if you do it properly) you'll have achieved the learning and practice you were looking for, but you will also have something unique, creative, and valuable! If you want to make Christian games, or games that make people think, or something family-friendly, or whatever goal you have, no reason why your first game can't be--it just has to also not be biting off more than you chew.
