Allrighty, I have my web hosting sorted now, but I want to set up a very simple forum on it, mostly for my co-contributors to discuss ideas. It doesn't have to be feature rich, in fact I don't even care if it has user accounts, anonymous is fine. I just want people to be able to look at a thread and see all the topics at once, rather than the old hierarchial type forum thingies...ANd also for it to be free, or at least nearly free.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks, I've heard of that one. Someone also suggested a hosted forum called Invision Free which has a small banner, but otherwise it looks like a good solution. I'll look into both.

Installing phpBB is a breeze - just be sure to delete all the install files afterwards.

Also phpBB hacks offer a large number of mods (as do many other sites) that you can run on phpBB to do all sorts of wonderful things.

The beauty of open source software...

Unfortunately I can't give you a demo of the one I recently installed as the site has not yet gone live. Apols.

I do not agree with 'planner' that Installing phpBB is a breeze I think that statement is absolutely patronising and unhelpful - however I do agree with Klumsy, yep phpbb IS certainly the best!

Amazing Jas - did you get it set up yet?

If you want to see what phpBB forums are like, I've got my own forums up at http://www.cobraa1.com/forums/ , plus I've got some mods installed.

I've got these mods installed:
Rank in memberlist
Watched Topics List
Stop Author View Increase
File Attachment Mod v2
Admin Userlist
Mass-lock
Show Avatars in ACP
Quick reply
Easy MOD Add-on
Country Flags
EasyMOD

EasyMod makes it easy to install most mods, although it's still mostly beta right now, can't uninstall mods yet. The File Attachment and Quick Reply mods are IMHO must-have mods (although they are also the largest).

I use phpbb too. It's seriously the best ever. Actually, I modified it to act like online journal software instead of a forum. You can see it at http://caleb.co.nr/journal/

cool.

to set up a phpbb forum, learn about your server MySQL database and stuff. get a FTP program, like WiseFTP or something. they have some instructions that come with the files.

Does phpbb cost? Everyone is speaking like it's a freebie, but they seem to have some prices listed on their site?

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/phpbb/phpBB-2.0.8a.zip?download

download page is there above but your website MUST have a database or else your installation will fail

you will need to know your database url and password

http://www.phpbb.com/support/tutorials/

Maybe the phpbb TUTORIALS might help?

It's funny what you come across a few years down the line...! I find it a shame that I was quoted in this way. My original post was genuinely intended to be a supportive thumbs-up for phpBB. I would have been happy to assist and support someone in installing phpBB, which I really do believe to be very easy to install. The first time I did it I managed it in under 5mins and I possess no specialist technical knowledge.

More of a shame is that the original poster saw fit to post into one forum, and then to quote and slate that post in another forum away from the original poster. I think that's a bit off, myself. Perhaps that's because it's me that was being slated. Who knows.

Either way - to put the record straight, I was not trying to patronise, but to start a dialogue of recommendation and then support.

Nice forum you have here, btw.
