I'm surprised this made such large press. Without knowing what was stated specifically in the Unreal Engine contract I'm not sure who to side with. Apparently the whole debate is over keeping certain features in-house instead of directly adding them to the engine for everyone else to use. To a degree I see that as an unfair advantage if the code fixed performance issues for all games. At the same time I think some of these companies are just complaining because Epic has created a better game than they can. Either way Epic should have tried to keep the whole thing under wraps since this is creating quite a bit of bad press for them. It's like a bomb that could have been defused easily when handled properly. |

Well, that ties into the weird stance of making an engine AND making games----if your clients have to engineer parts of the engine themselves because you didn't provide all your code under the umbrella of 'it is propietary for our game' then you are in a real gray area--I say Epic is being shady with it. ------------------ |

That's a bit of an overstatement there to say that the other companies are just complaining because they can't make a good game. A) I've seen small companies make MUCH better games then big ones, so it has nothing to do with the financial or manpower size of the company. B) the companies complaining have released some great games to date. I think Epic tried to pull something and got caught doing it. Nothing against their games or anything but if it's more than one company making the same complaint against them...well there's probably something going on behind the scenes. ------------------ |

quote: Agreed, where there is smoke there is usually fire---and it is kind of sad because those companies trusted Epic to help make their dev cycle easier and got shanked. ------------------ |
