I'm just going to copy and paste the template i used for this site
http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=460759

Team name:
The Disciples

Brief description:

Well here's the deal I'm in the process of looking for a programmer to help me with a game. And the idea is for it to be bible based.

It sad all the most popular games focus on killing and stuff and doesn't focus on how we're supposed to act, and that's with love. Good example of this is Grand theft auto. Your rewarded for killing, stealing, and other stuff. But I'm not here to rant about those games so, I'll explain more about what came to mind mind.

Concepts:

1.Must be fun and a game that helps strengthen in God's word.
2.Must focus on the teaching's of Jesus and full of biblical truth.

Target aim:

Well my plans right now are just getting a team together to help put the game together.

Compensation:

Well i was thinking of maybe offering a way for various Churches to contribute funds to this project through donations.

Technology:

Open to any ideas on this one.

Talent needed:

To be very blunt with this one, I need every type of talent needed to make a game.

Team structure:

Well team structure so far is just me who has a limited knowledge of visual basic and a a friend of mine who knows a decent amount of visual basic.

Website:

No website as of yet, will possibly change.

Contacts:

X1xRandyx1X@hotmail.com

Previous Work by Team:

This is really the first project I have tried taking on.

Additional Info:

Most important part of course: Game play: The game play is going to focus on The spiritual armor described in the bible and the goal will be to strengthen all of it through the game, which will help you thwart the attacks of darkness.

For example: The shield of faith: The stronger your faith is the stronger and more powerful the shield would look and would be able to protect you against the forces of darkness efficiently.

It sounds like you have a very similar heart to many of us other developers here -- looks like you're in the right place!

A word of positive feedback -- I think it's great to start with core abstract goals like this and build your game with these things wholly in mind.

Have you considered joining an already existing team to help them on their project, as a way to get your feet wet? From personal experience, I can tell you that it's *extremely* hard to successfully lead a project through to completion -- if you take time to be a helpful underling on a project or two now, you will have invaluable experience for leading your own ideas in the future.

There are a number of fresh games with very similar goals to what you specified that were just entered into the 2-week game competition. I'm pretty sure a few of them will continue to be developed -- who knows, maybe some of them will already be seeking to accomplish some of the very things you'd like to see done. In case you haven't seen the other thread, you can find that one here. In particular, it sounds like Darkening might be something very close to what you're describing (not one of the 2-week games, but a larger project that Jari has been working on for a while).

Regardless of whether you continue to pursue your own dream, or you work to help someone else realize theirs, I want to extend a hearty "Welcome to CCN" to you! It seems like you have many ideals similar to others here, and we hope you feel welcome in our community.

In Christ,
clint

Best advice you can get. Work on your idea, keep it on the backburner and grab some experience in development.

if your a coder (or want to get into coding), try making simple games such as a guessing game or tic tac toe (naughts and crosses).. then move onto bigger game projects until your capable to handle a bigger project.

As Dartsman said, I'd recommend you start learning how to make some simple games, and gradually grow into larger ones. We talked about this quite a bit in another thread called Hello World for Games, where we laid out a series of (somewhat freeform) guidelines for budding game developers.

The main purpose of that thread is to encourage new game developers to keep a very *small* scope. In this past Speedgame competition (that just ended this past Saturday), my partner and I chose one of the smallest game ideas that we could think of -- a match 3 puzzle game. We dumped our effort into that simple game, and it was an incredibly large amount of work to bring that to completion (and we didn't even get everything done that we wanted). I can't hardly imagine how much more it would have required if we had wanted to do something like an action/adventure RPG.

New runners shouldn't start out trying to tackle a marathon -- build up to it. Start small, and you won't regret it when you finish. Start big, and you're setting yourself up for failure.

I hope this advice is helpful!

In Christ,
clint

you know i just can't help it wonder why are there so few people on #ccn-chatzone irc?? on linux dev irc's and other irc's you see lots of people helping out each other if more people would participate in the ccn irc then everyone could help out,and even a hughe game project started by a beginner like x1xrandyx1x or me or anyone else could be a success, when you start game projects specially free/open-source ones it's best if you find a way to involve anyone that's willing to help help. and i think irc is the best way and you could learn stuff,or if you don't want to crowd the ccn irc just make your own channel on freenode and announce it here on ccn.

i think one of the biggest things lacking is co-operaton i would really like to help out when i have time on these projects but i don't know how to or where.

x1xrandyx1x:

try #ccn-chatzone on irc.freenode.net server in irc i would try to drop in some time soon(if i have enough time)

IRC isn't as widely used these days. People prefer MSN and all the other similar networks. I'm always on Freenode however, lurking about somewhere. Use /notify if you want to know when. I'm always around for a chat.
