I downloaded a program to try it out. Unfortunetly the program doesn't work, so I attempt to delete it. It says that the programs in use by another program. I want to get rid of it, and no other programs are running. ------------------ |

Try rebooting, then delete. If that doesn't work, leave it alone for a while and then try again. ------------------

If you cant delete it after reboot, you might want to boot into safe mode, it might have dropped a virus or dropped something into your start up routine

That has happened to me before(and with files that definitely were not virus-spyware-malware-trojan etc.) Best solution I can find is to just wait a few days, then try deleting it again. |

I've looked for help on safe mode, but couldn't get into it. Anyway, last time I had something that had this problem, it had something to do with processes or the registry. Arg, sometime I'm going to finish that school and get into linux! ------------------ |

quote: You can download a program called Process Explorer for Windows that not only lists the programs running, but shows which file is open by which program. I had to use it the other day at work, because I couldn't delete a file for the same reason. It's much better than Task Manager. ------------------ |

try shutting down some services and try to kill every single process and dll you don't need. as long as the system lets you and it's not explorer.exe it's usually safe to kill.
http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/PsTools.zip http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/Handle.zip http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/Filemon.zip http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessExplorer.zip or incase if you want to get the whole thing here is a link:
if you can't do that too, try modifying the boot.ini file at c:\boot.ini try adding /SAFEBOOT or /SOS here is an example boot.ini file i put it in quotes to make things look better: quote: oh i use f:/ drive as my windows drive so if the windows folder is in c:\ on your system you might have to make the part that says partition(4) to partition(1) get it.....1==c so 4==f . anyways try that. the only other ways i could tell you would probably violate the eula. like shutting down the sfc ..... oh and here is a cool tool if you are really sick of spywares and adwares it's a port monitor(tcp/ip) it lets you see which program has which ports open with who. and at what port you can also kill any process you want or if you don't want that you can just close the socket. http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/TcpView.zip

You can also try using privilege escalation. If you're logged in as an administrator you can using the scheduling service. Open command prompt and type ::
Change the time to whatever is one minute or so after the current time. In a few moments a new console will pop up, this one will be actually be svchost.exe (Windows Service Host) Using taskmanager, close explorer. Then in your svchost.exe command prompt, type "explorer.exe" or just "exlporer" You will now be logged in as "SYSTEM", and should be able to stop almost any process. ------------------ |

I tried Process Explorer and see nothing suspicious, hmm... maybe I'll just wait a little while for it to cool down. ------------------ |

its a good idea to keep a list of normal processes for your machine. that way if something starts to act funny, you can check to see which "hostile" processes are running.

hey have you tried the safeboot method?? btw what kind of file is it?? is it a txt file??? if you are unsure which process is good and which is bad try: http://www.processlist.com if you find a process that is not listed on that site or that is listed as a bad process then kill it, but before you do that find out where it is located, then kill it and delete it. and have you tried the other tools??? and can you find the name of the program you installed in the process list?? ------------------ |

Sometimes an app or even Windows itself forgets to release a hold/lock on a file or folder, and it makes it difficult to delete it. It's not the file's fault, some app just forgot to release it. For example, I run into this quite often with Visual Studio 2005, when I want to delete some intermediate .obj files or whatever. Rather than rebooting just to remove the lock, I've found http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ is a nifty freeware app that does the trick nicely. ------------------ Check out this webhost! Fantastic prices, features and support! |
