Hey, I can't even remember the last time I posted in Help Wanted. Anyway, in a game I am beginning work on very soon there will be a need for some translation. I could, of course, write everything out in English and use one of those web-based translators, but I want it to be accurate and follow the right patterns of speech. If you know any of the following languages and want to help, please post here. ------------------ |

I can translate French pretty well. I'm fairly fluent and have some good French friends in Uni. ------------------ |

@RM : Heh, nothing to envy yet. I like how you made it sound though. "Well my game has been extremely successful in the English-speaking market, so I'm going international!" No such luck. The game itself calls for various different languages to be used. :-p @D-SIPL : Ok, thank you ------------------ [This message has been edited by crazyishone (edited November 26, 2006).] |

My sister can translate Latin fluently... I doubt she'd be willing to help however. How big of a workload? ------------------ |

The stuff in Latin probably wont be much more than a few "texts" and cryptic messages. Nothing that would take more than 20 minutes tops for somebody who knows the language well. ---- ------------------ [This message has been edited by crazyishone (edited November 26, 2006).] |

If the Capn's sister can't do it than I might be able to help with the Latin Crazy, I took 3 years of it and should be able to work it out for you. I also have a knack for "tweaking" the language a bit to make it sound extra epic (though not necessarily grammatically correct all the time). ------------------ Portia The Merchant of Venice |

Well I probably won't need any of the Latin to sound "epic". Perhaps ominous though... :-p Thanks ereon, I was worried I wouldn't find anyone for Latin. ------------------ |

Oh, I can do epic One question though, can you PM me the concept of how you're going to use it? I like to know what kind of project I'm helping with before I submit anything. ------------------ Portia The Merchant of Venice |

I'll just post a link to my initial concept. Info Right now I'm just researching (so much researching :-p) and gathering up resources. ------------------ |

*nod* Interesting. I'd be happy to offer some help. Give me a line to tinker with and I'll send it back to you when I finish it so you can get a sample of my work. Does it absolutely have to be properly translatable scholarly Latin? Or do you want just the basic gist/tweaked Latin for the sake of sounding/looking like Latin? With a game I'm assuming the second option, but I want to make sure. ------------------ Portia The Merchant of Venice |

Well being a text-based game, I can't put alot of work into graphics, phsyics, or any of the fun stuff. So along with programming, I'm really pushing for authenticity. Everything from meeting people that actually existed to the language they speak. Now, as Latin was "dying" at the time, it will mostly be found when the player reads/inspects some tablet, scroll, book, etc.. The "heavy clues" so to speak. ie "The Scrolls of St. John Doe!" Either way, I'm just finding out what languages I have to work with before I plan out the full course the main character will take. I don't want to have him going to Germany if I can't get some Lutherans speaking German, etc. (Fortunately I've got German covered ) ------------------ |

DSIPL probly knows the French better than I do, I only have the 4 years I took in High School. Still, I'd be willing to help if I could, just let me know. BTW, it sounds really cool, I read through the whole thing. ------------------ Blind belief is dangerous. - Kenyan Proverb Computers are useless. They can only give you answers. - Pablo Picasso |

I know a bit of Korean, (Martial Arts) can't write in it, but I know a little bit. (I know a couple words, I have a manual of a couple words (When I say couple I mean more than 20) and can count to 19, I don't know much standard words though.) I can count to 3 in French, and to 10 in Spanish. ------------------ |
