Why does every fantasy themed game need sorcery and necromancy (divination)? "Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD" Deuteronomy 18:10-12 I always hoped that if Christians made an RPG, it would not be wrapped up in the casting of spells. Here's what GOd told Israel: "The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so. The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him." Perhaps, instead of a sorcerers or necromancers, there could be prophets? Being a prophet doesn't have to be boring: "Elijah answered the captain, 'If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!' Then fire fell from heaven and consumed the captain and his men." 2 Kings 1:12 ------------------ |

Tricky part about having a prophet is determining exactly how that "calling down fire from Heaven" works. "I'm a level 5 prayer warrior, I can now cast Pillar of Fire!" It begins to almost turn God into a vending machine, or into a Djinni who as long as we say the magic words will bow to our will. It's hard to put the Finger of God into a story, because then someone has to play (and speak/act) the part of God. --clint |

haha, vending machine. i agree that a lot of games use sorcery and we've become somewhat desensitised from it. but on the other hand, i agree with hanclinto that there isn't really an easy replacement for it in fantasy themed games. i generally prefer technology to magic, that way it's the device that provides the power (say flame thrower ability or shocker). i didn't play all the way through, but in the game Xenosaga one of the characters has this mechanical bracer/shield thing that is basically how she attacks. i wasn't a huge fan of the game (anime style games always have poor emotional reactions) but i thought that was a neat idea. |

quote: You're right, it is difficult to come up with a Godly alternative to fantasy magic. I'm always uncomfortable using magic in games, but I put up with it, allowing that they are mainly made by people that don't know the grim reality about such things. I understand that everyone has differing views on game content in games made by Christians, but I felt it was worth mentioning. If the game is in an early enough stage, there may be room to figure out something else to do. I imagine a lot of people on CCN would probably feel more comfortable helping out with a game that had less magic. Three of the five character classes are essentially magical characters. Warrior and Scout are the only exceptions. What about Herbalist, Hunter, Blacksmith, Martial Arts Expert, Entreprenuer, Guard, Inventor (with jestermax's tech weapons), Thief, and so forth? I once spent a couple hours with a friend of mine coming up with non-magical fantasy character types. We probably came up with 40 or 50 reasonable ones. ------------------ |

quote: I agree with the possibility of replacing magic with technology. It does require a bit more creativity, but that also allow you be more original! Also along the same lines - genetics. If you think about it animals can already do some very 'magical' things through chemical reactions (fire flies, electric eels, scorpions, beetles that shoot hot acids, extra sensory perception, 100x human strength (ants), produce material that is stronger than anything man made (spider silk), sonic shock waves (whales, dolphins), climb walls (geckos), fly (bugs and birds), and of course you know this list goes on forever...so out with the sorceror and in with the evil mad geneticist. bwwaaahHaHa it seems someone turned one loose in Revelations anyway- with all those flying stingie things! one example would be a genetically engineered critter that a person could attach to ones forearm, depending on the genes spliced to produce the little monster, it could emit various weapon and defense effects at the persons command. oooooweee! Organic technology... there are some pretty neat things that have been done with that in sci-fi stories already, but there's plenty of room for improvement. The first that comes to mind is the Star Wars: New Jedi Order foes, the "Yuuzhan Vong", who apparently engineered all sorts of critters that even become their spaceships (they have some kind of gravity lock-on ability for propulsion). There was even something done with an "arm critter symbiote" I saw on the Sci-Fi Channel, can't think of the name of the show: it was either Farscape or Battlefield:Earth. Indeed, I'm aware of some real-world work where they want to model nanotechnology and certain miniature motors after things like RNA, or even incorporate existing RNA into such miniature machines (MEMS, for I think micro-electromechanical systems). It would also serve as a neat allegory to take in some philosophical-type questions we could be asking about real technology: it all amounts to trying to take what God has made and "improve" upon it. Can we really expect to improve God's creation? Is that His plan for us, since in our cursed, fallen world, things have degraded from the state in which He created them originally? Or is it the utmost of pride? And animal rights groups would have a field day with it. |

Not many people will fish anymore if there's a chance the fish will shoot deadly acid in your face!! Those cute little goldfish will have to be sold with warning labels from now on.
