Ubuntu! I'd not recommend FedoraCore, RedHat, or Suse. ------------------ ``After three days without programming, life becomes meaningless.'' -- Tao of Programming Book 2 |

fyi, i have never been able to get fedora core 4 to install, i always get some weird error, i think it might be corrupt media or something. this is d/l the iso files 2 times from different sites(so obviously new cd-rs), and even trying the dvd iso out. fedora core 3 installed with no problems, but to get windows installed again i have to install another distro of linux, or at least use another to set up the partitions and format the hardrive, and then install windows after that. i'd recomend ubuntu to start with, or fedora core 3. i'm not a linux guru, but being newb myself, those were the easiest to install. ubuntu even has a live cd you can use to try it out without messing with your hard drive...which you could also get knoppix of phlack for, but knoppix i haven't messed with, and phlack is geared more for "network administration" . ![]() ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

Slackware is great! IF you feel you don't need to be babied into Linux (Ubuntu does that) slackware would be my next choice. ------------------ ``After three days without programming, life becomes meaningless.'' -- Tao of Programming Book 2 |

Hmm... I am planning on using it for game development, graphics editing, 3D modeling, and some hacking. Would one distro be better suited for this than another? ------------------ |

Ok, I'll go with ubuntu. I have a pretty good computer, so it shouldn't be a problem. ------------------ |

Go with Slackware. Compile everything yourself, it's longer and more boring. But at least it won't screw up your distro (unlike apt etc) and your box will be streamlined, nicely configured and best of all stable! --D-SIPL ------------------ |

Sorry didn't read the post fully. I would advise against anything Red Hat related (Fedora etc)! --D-SIPL ------------------ |

Well it's on my laptop... so it's not really a "box", lol. Sry, I just had to say that....... anyway, umm... my dad is being weird and said that I can't install linux 'till the school year is over... So I will have plenty of time to decide which distro I want to use. Umm... At the moment, it is very hard to decide..... >_<------------------ |

quote: Okie dokie. I suggest you do your own research. Google for a linux distro list.
quote: Or gentoo.... But the main question is: There's loads of new things in linux, if you try to tackle an advanced distro you may be confused. That's why I suggested Ubuntu first. Slackware (not compiling everything) would also be good. Compiling loads of packages can be confusing, I'd suggest you go with precompiled packages first. Took me months to understand the way compiling works in Gentoo. ------------------ "After three days without programming, life becomes meaningless.'' -- Tao of Programming Book 2 |

Slackware is a great place to start. It could take you several days to get your computer functioning properly with XWindows but it is completly worth the time. A couple of weeks ago I built Linux From Scratch which was a great experience. It takes a long time to finish but everything is fully customized and is a great way to understand the Linux OS. I would not recommend doing this unless you have some background in Linux and compiling programs. Good Luck! Whatever choice you make will be great! |

quote: You can download the CD image(s) for some distro, burn them in CD and install. Ubuntu is a simple to install distro (unlike slackware): http://www.ubuntu.com/ The most difficult part in installing linux is partioning the harddrive which you have to do if you have only one HD and windows installed on it. It's not a big deal when you have done it once, just making a note. you don't need a fully-customizable-hard-to-install-drive-the-newb-insane distro for general everyday use, (k)ubuntu would be good for that. if you use the internet a lot and have a dial-up connection you need to make sure your modem will work in linux, but if you have dsl/cable or something in that order than your good to go. ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |
