3D models, really. Here's the deal. I'm working on a 3D computer version of a pretty sweet board game. This is a project born out of the Christian Game Developers Conference. The game logic and rules are about 99% in place with an ugly, 2D interface. I can't release a demo at this point because it isn't much to look at, and I'd like to protect the IP of the guy who invented the board game which hasn't been published yet. I can tell you this, the game is similar to chess but it has fantasy characters/pieces: foot soldiers, guards, captains, warrior princesses, archers, wizards, high priests/priestesses, catapults and dragons. What I need are 3D models for these pieces. Right now, I really just need place holders, but well polished models would also be welcome. I'd like to be able to put together a 3D demo - proof on concept. I've spent many hours programming this game but I'm no artist. If anyone knows where I could find free models of the pieces I listed, that would be equally as helpful. If you'd like to help, or have any suggestions, please, reply. I used SDL to make the 2D version, thus far, and I'm converting to Irrlict for the 3D version. I have a registered version of Milkshape 3D, so any model formats that it can import, should work fine. steveth45 ------------------ |

Howdy! Is this the board game from DragonX games? If so, it looked really sweet at last year's conference, and I look forward to seeing this done. Sadly, I'm in the same boat as you -- I'm a 2D programmer and don't know much about 3D yet. I know there have been postings here recently with good resources for free models, but I would have to dig some to find them (unless one of you 3d modeling guys knows a good resource off the top of your head? Lava? Kiwee? Guategeek? Questleader? CPU? CoolJ? Others?) Regardless, welcome to the boards! --clint |

One great resource for free misc. 3D models is www.lowpolycoop.com. Just go to the forums, and you can download whole packs of 3D models, ranging from street signs to battle axes. The site also has links to other 3D resource sites. Hope this helps! ------------------ [This message has been edited by questleader (edited February 22, 2006).] |

lol i'm going to start modeling... i could do some placeholders, nothing good... but that's what you asked for!! lol... i'll work on them as soon as my dad lets me download a modeler lol!! ------------------ |

Since all you need are placeholders allow me to suggest a simple alternative until you can get better stuff (as detailed models will likely take a while and, if you're like me, you probably hate deadtime ![]() ------- Or some other iteration of that. It ould provide a quick, easy placeholder so you can test the concept in 3D. I'm stuck with dialup internet, so I can't make and send the stuff myself right now, I'm trying to get my parents to allow me to buy some DSL, and if that comes through I'd gladly do the models for you. Hope this is helpful. Ereon ------------------ |

I whipped up these cheesy chess dudes ![]() ![]() archer, warrior, wizard, cleric There in milkshape format: Yeah, I know there lame, but I can do a whole slew of different ones in just minutes. I used truespace for them. Have fun with them. Suppose I could make action anims for them quickly if you need to test that. Have fun! |

Wow!! You guys are awesome. Thanks Coolj! It's something to get started with, for sure. This is a true community. On gamedev.net, the people in the forums are willing to give you advice, or tell you what you're doing wrong. Here, people are willing to pitch in. How cool is that? This is a big encouragement for me. Han, It's good to here from you. It is a big step to get into 3D programming. Before last year's conference, I spent several months trying to make my own 3D "engine". I learned that 3D math is really hard, but there are tricks (pre-existing libraries of code) to get around the difficulty of it. I would highly suggest downloading the Irrlicht engine and looking at the tutorials that come with it. I think the "Hello World" tutorial is like 20 lines of code that displays an animated model! It doesn't get much easier than that. Irrlicht is natively C++, but it has .NET bindings and all the tutorials are also available in C#! I talked to the guy who developed the concept and rules for the game and he agreed to let me put up a webpage where I can put up screenshots and post news about the progress of development. I'll put a message up in the forum when that's ready. It'll probably be at my webpage www.geocities.com/steveth_45 which hasn't been updated since last summer. Maybe this way, I can get a little momentum and encourage people to pitch in. ------------------ |

Questleader, thanks for the cool link. I've been looking for something like that. Buddboy & Ereon, I'm glad you guys want to help. If you don't already have modeling software, some free ones are Anim8or (quick download from anim8or.org), and Blender. Version 3.2 of trueSpace is free (I haven't tried it). For $30, Milkshape is probably the best deal for beginner modelers. It is so easy, even I can use it. I mainly use it to import and tweak models I find on the net that are in strange formats. I can then save them in Milkshape's .ms3d format which the Irrlict engine supports natively. ------------------ |

I'd like to help with the modelling, but I'm already neck deep in a project of my own. If you need any textures though just tell me what you need, what format, and what size and I'll whip up some really nice ones for you. ------------------ |

Aaah, finally found his business card. Timothy Allan Clayton Is this that game, Steveth45? If you met Timothy at the conference last year, then you might have met me as well. In this picture, you can see Timothy and his wife on the right side of the picture, and I'm almost exactly opposite him on the left side of the picture, and a little up. I'm the dorky guy in the glasses and white shirt. Are you in this picture? Edit: Hah! Found you! I might have to pick up Irrlicht at some point. I've been playing around with Torque a fair bit lately and learning that -- that's a nice engine, though if I wasn't working with it, I think Irrlicht might very well be my next choice. Thanks for the recommendation! Cheers! In Christ, [This message has been edited by HanClinto (edited February 24, 2006).] |

That's awesome that you want to help. These are the characters I need: foot soldier, archer, captain of the guard, warrior princess, high priest/priestess, and catapult. I found a free wizard model thats not too bad. I also need a dragon, but that's a pretty difficult one. Why don't you start with either the archer or the foot soldier? Stephen ------------------ |

Hey Buddboy, I appreciate the effort. We'd like to make the characters more realistic than cartoon-like. There are some great tutorials on low-poly modeling at this webpage http://www.psionic3d.co.uk/tutorials.html . God bless ------------------ |

Try absorbing the princible or the basics, don't look at the program but the technique, programs are similar ![]() I hope that helps ------------------ [This message has been edited by lava (edited March 02, 2006).] |

If anyone is interested, I toasted my old geocities webpage and made a new one with my own domain so I didn't have to worry about ads and restrictive bandwidth usage. I posted a screenshot of the game, too. The internal game logic and so forth is already 97% done, so once I get enough models together the the pieces, it should be ready for a playable demo. ------------------ |
