I need some suggestions about what to use to make games. Should i go old school and go totally programming, or should i try and use an engine. i also could use some program suggestions for stuff to make landscapes, people, and other stuff. i need a 3d modeller that can make '.x' files because i cant get blitz to do POVray. please help me. ------------------ |

I think you should go with programming your own simple game engine in 2D before you use a game engine. Unless you are planning to use some simple engine like game maker, blitz or game studio I suppose. ------------------ |

How much have you done? If you are able, it's often helpful to program a very small game from scratch in order to see what it takes and what's involved. The quality of game engines is so high these days, it's hard to imagine programming a good game by one's-self without using one. I'm currently planning on using SdlDotNet for 2d graphics, and RealmForge for 3d development. SdlDotNet is usable, and is much like PyGame in structure (except that it's in C#, not Python). RealmForge is still in development, and is an impressive generic 3D framework. As far as where you should start, I would recommend doing whatever you feel comfortable and motivated working with. If you have the energy to do a game from scratch, then I say "Great! Go for it! You'll learn a lot!". If you'd rather have the simplicity and the fast results from using a game engine, I say "Great! Go for it! You'll learn a lot!". One of the main things that's important for me is to stay motivated with programming, and if I'm not motivated with one area, I can switch gears into an area that I'm more interested in at the moment. It's not a great method for getting a big project done, but it's a good method for learning a lot about game development, programming, and staying moving. Later on down the road you'll want to learn what it takes to follow a project through to completion (a lot of people underestimate what it takes), but if you're just learning programming, I think it's okay to just dabble. --clint ------------------ |

most important right now is that we get a '.x' maker. ------------------ |

I'm pretty sure Blender makes .x (www.blender3d.org) It won't read .x though and it's open-source (totally free with virtually no restrictions). What OS are you using? ------------------

Realm Master: .x is a text based DirectX file type, for like say models for a video game, like 3ds. |

Make a model in Wings3d (wings3d.com), then export it as a OBJ file into Blender and export it to .x that's the only thing I can think of ------------------ |

Find tutorials on it, that's the best way I learn, it famiarizes me with the interface, even if I don't finish the tutorial. ------------------ |
