We are experiencing problems over at www.christian.net, wherein the members, who get free webhosting as part of membership, are now off of the Internet. The member sites cannot be accessed from browsers, such as Safari, Explorer, Mozilla, Konqueror, etc.

We are able to edit the contents through the capabilities provided for that purpose, but our web sites cannot be found by web browsers.

I am suspicious that the site has been hacked, but I have also been told about some shenanigans by Verisign that might be playing things up as well. If there are coders here that can help get our sites back on the Internet, please help. The site owner is a member here as well, but I can't remember his login to leave him a private message. In any case, please help. I am only a user and don't have access or expertise to help in this situation, but any comments that might help can find me at billsey@christian.net

Thanks

Pray for prayer---pray till you can pray; pray to be helped to pray, and give not up praying because you cannot pray, for it is when you think you cannot pray that you are most praying. Sometimes when you have no sort of comfort in your supplications, it is then that your heart---all broken and cast down---is really wrestling and truly prevailing with the Most High."

I have just checked the main site. It is fine. Please give me details of the site you have problems with.

The main site appears to be fine, but try accessing the user's sites, which should be accessible as http://<username>.christian.net. For example, my site is http://billsey.christian.net

The other users also have such sites either already set up, or set aside to be set up. In the last few days, suddenly I cannot access my site through a browser, getting a "server not found" message. The content is apparently all there. I am able to access my space for modification using the file manager, but that doesn't show the web site as it would appear in a browser, and I can't access it through a browser. As well I have noted at least one other user logging in an attempt to alert the site of a similar problem with their site. So it's not just me.

I have heard that Verisign added a wildcard entry to their DNS lookup for all .com and .net domains and that this new entry might be playing havoc with systems all over the Net, but I suspect hacking.

Have you spoken to the site owner? When I spoke to him he was really helpful. The free webspace is kind, however, some people do take advantage of it. There may be a user who is using their site for porn,mp3 etc., and generating too much bandwidth. If that is the case the system administrator will have to suspend all free accounts until the problem is solved. Genuine users like yourself should not be affected in the longterm. Have you got backups of all your' pages?

If I had a method of contacting him that I knew he would see quickly and respond to, sure I would. The main reason I came here for help is that it was on this site that he invited me to come there. In fact, were it not for the 1 meg filesize limit, I could have mp3's of my friend's sermons available for download, which was the first reason he invited and I accepted, I was looking for a place to make my friend's sermons available.

I asked the users there to check their sites for availability, and at least one other (up to three now) says theirs is down as well. This one has been down for almost a week now.

I would suspect neither. The DNS and verisign is to do with them camping on miss-spelt domains. Which as this is a sub-domain cannot be the case. With regards to hacking i suspect that the intruder would have changed your passwords, and rather then going for you would have more the likely gone for root access, so you could 99% rule that out.

The thing is even if you do narrow the problem down (although it is unlikely) it can only be the webmaster who can fix it, so your better off sending him an email.
