I am working on a project to create a Christian RPG that can rival secular games like Final Fantasy. I have figured out a basic storyline, but I am very flexible. In the not too distant future, missionaries all over the world have pushed God's Word into control of the planet. Eventually, however, descendants of the ancients who practiced witchcraft begin using powerful magic to attack the Christian forces. Most begin to doubt God, losing the only ally able to fight them. Christianity is almost completely wiped out, and magic begins to rule. 14 years later, on a small island, the prescence of the magical government is not known. Arising from this island, a small Christian band recievs a vision from God. Much like the walls of Jericho fell to a trumpet blast, thier music will destroy the magical government. In order to better aid them on thier quest, God has granted to them the same power that he gave to all who fiight for His people, the power of miracles.
In order to make this game good enough to rival secular games, we need a large team of people. I need the following people:
script\scenario writer
map\level designer
character designer
graphic designer
system developer
enemy designer
item developer
several programmers
If you have any talents which can be useful to this project, please let me know at thnik2006@msn.com, or I can be reached by windows messenger at thnik2006@msn.com, or AOL instant messenger at galdriel4ever.
Thank you.

Thats pretty in depth, nice one. Just a few questions i know will be asked.

What language will the game be written in?
Will the engine be in-house, or will you use and existing game engine?

I am currently busy with Graceworks at the moment. If you need any guidance or have any questions then pm me.

As to the programming language, I will leave that choice open to anyone who wishes to help with the programming. If I choose a specific language, I would limit the people who could help. For the engine, I find it a good idea to use something akin to the Final Fantasy 7 engine, as it allows for good gameplay, while not requiring hefty hardware requiremnts. If I can use tht engine, it will be great, but I am not closed to the idea of creating a game engine.

Nice. I've had a similar idea about making an RPG about a small group of Christians converting an entire continent of non-believers. Only thing was, I was never really able to flesh out my idea into a playable game.

If you want to beat Final Fantasy and the like, I suggest we start working on:
-getting a good 3D engine
or
-making a good 3D engine

right away. I'd prefer using an existing engine, as creating one is extremely difficult. It should be flexible enough for an RPG environment, and be able to handle both indoors and outdoors.

I could be a part-time programmer, and probably make some stand-in graphics (although you'll need a more practiced artist to really make it look good).

Oh, BTW, my machine is kinda low-end - 660 MHz, Intel 810 graphics. It should be able to handle FF7-level GFX, though.

Well that would have to be the most uniqie idea ive seen come through here in some time. The only help I can offer is an opion. First maybe drop the idea that the people on the inland know nothing about the magic people. To know about God hide on a little inland sounds really lame to be blunt. Second if I were you I would try a much smaller project first.

To be more specific, the islanders do know of the world government, but they don't know the evils of it, or the fact that they use magic. The island itself is too small to be important to the world government, so they have been able to worship in peace.

I would agree with Angel, as in about trying a smaller project.

to be honest, that's what I am doing. Doing smaller projects will give you invaluable experience, thus increasing the quality of your game. also, little projects might be able to get you a name, which can aid to the popularity of the game.

Good luck, tho!

The most important thing will be getting a team together - if that can't be done, it would be best to do a smaller project - large projects are best done by good teams.

I agree, i needed to brush up on my C++ skills again so i am writing a Centipede clone, remember that old arcade classic. It's just as a refresher to me, but it is definately do-able by a newb.

But if you get a good team, dedicated, good design document and commitment then the sky's the limit! go for it!

Sounds like a neat concept. I'm also working on a Christian RPG, but I don't have the experience to make it a rival to secular games, so I'm going old-school on this one. Someday I hope to have the skill to work on a project like yours, though.

Aack, completely forgot! Sorry about that.

I'm almost finished with a project of my own, so I've been focusing on figuring out how to sell it online.

I found an open source RPG game here:

Hello.

Your game project sounds interesting.

I am a composer. Are you interested in hiring anyone for sound, esp. music?

i went to your site richard, and some of your demos sound pretty good, you are quite adept musically. What tools/software do you use to compose your music?

i am quite perplexed at the descriptions of some of your songs though - such as 'a sing-along with demonic Templars '

b.t.w are you a christian?

I would like to join your group. I have been programming in C/C++ for about 7 years and know some about OpenGL. The idea sounds really neat and I can see it coming to fruition! Pleaz email me and let me know. I have been searching for a Christian game programming group to join and make a quality 2D (tile) or 3D game!

an RPG in it's exact definition is Role-Playing Game, where the user takes the role of a character. In a RPG, the character you control can become stronger, smarter, faster, acquire more weapons, more armor, etc.. with computer games, the line between action games and rpg kinda blurred. The RPG goes back to psychology and paper and pencil.
Basically, the RPG is where you take on the role of someone else, but in Comp games, it includes upgrading and junk...
took too long.. tired of writing

Took me a while to work out what KOTOR was: Knights of the old republic right? That's not the MMORPG is it? It's more like Jedi Knight 2 but with RPG elements I think? JK2 had some excellent features. Walking into a room and using forcepull to snatch weapons out of hands was great, or forcepushing unsuspecting storm-troopers off ledges etc was great fun

Paladin Games has started their own RPG, otherwise I would be willing to help.

Small suggestion: If you are going to make an RPG game and can't get another programmer, start with a simple game that has code designs you can push forward to the next game. i.e. You have miracles instead of spells or magic. Instead of making the big FF rival game the first shot out, make a 2D scroller RPG with that miracles class that will work well in your 2nd game, or something along those lines that will get your first game out quick. Trust me, I've been there. I wanted to make the FF rival Christian game as well. But after learning the hard way, we learned to take baby steps and make and finish projects that will get you to that goal, one step at a time. If you try too big too fast, you end up staring at the computer wondering how the next step happens.

Good luck!

Whuzzle?? I'm not a Christian per se(ok, not at all), but I would be interested in hearing a bit about the game. Your idea seems sound, and I definitely support you in trying to obtain a Final Fantasy 7 feel. I hope all goes well for ya...

Oh, BTW, I've replaced my computer. I now have a 2.5 GHz Celron, and my graphics card handles a lot more now . It still isn't capable of T&L , but it'll run every non-T&L game on the market .

T&L = Hardware Transform and Lighting. I'm quite surprised Intel opted not to support it. Grr.

I think it's a great idea!
I wish you luck.
I would like to help you if it wasn't because I'm already working on a game with some friends, and anyway, what I'm really good at is at making stories for the games and you seem to be doing a good job. I really hope your game turns out to be as good as it sounds (or even better!) and I hope you could send me a free sample (just joking).
Also, do you still need a programmer? Because I know one that's very good, and he might be able to help you.
I hope you make it.

Don't know if your still listening, 4given4sin, but heres a concept for the plot: what if a scientist helps you out at some point, who doesn't 'believe', but knows that the magical way of doing things is wrong, and eventually the scientist becomes Christian along the way ('cuz we're all Christian underneath)?

Note, I have my own ideas for a Christian RPG, but in order for the community to get one out everyone should put their support behind someone.

The scientist should start off thinking that the Christians, with there miracles, are about the same as the magic-workers, except they seem to treat people better.

As for music, Final Fantasy music is mostly based on church hyms-- and that's not something that needs to be altered in this. I'm guessing there are plenty of hymm-midis on the internet, probably...

(edit)

Oh, and with the original plot, how does such a huge empire, ruled by Christians, fall?

Hi!
As a new game development company we started to make our first game Inkvisitor in the end of 2002! We were NOT trying to beat any secular games, just make a good game with a christian content!
So here´s my experience... as MANY have already said, MAKE A SMALL GAME! We estimated to make the game in 12 months, but it took around 20 months!

The longer the time, the more costly, or the bigger chans someone gets tired and drops out!

Game development can be fun, and it is (in the beginning), but soon you will notice that HARD work is needed to finnish it! "Anyone" can start making a ggame, but only a few ever gets a game ready!

I would suggest to make a small game, and NOT even try to beat a modern secular game. If you make a good game, then you can start to raise the dreams.
I hope the best for your project, but start SMALLA!

We have decided to make 1 or 2 smaller games now, and if those all sell, then we will go for a bigger or even HUGE RPG game!
