Does anyone own their own server and can provide free hosting?

If not, any suggestions on cheap?

Or any places that allow several to sign-up and share the expenses?

I have several sites, but none of them are huge nor have a lot of traffic. They are currently hosted by various free providers, but it would be nice to get them all in one location. Also, BizLand has turned off their free hosting.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'd be keen for this to happen. To sum up my thoughts on the other topcis (I'll post them there as well) I have been using CVS at work for ages, and have been using it on sourceforge, and I must say its an integral part of any serious project. CVS isn't necessarily the only way, but some form of source code control and asset managment is vital. I would chip in to pay for for a server that can run CVS for us.

I don't think you'll find a free service in a hurry, but all we need is someone with a linux box, on a permanent connection (it doesn't even need to have a DNS name) with cvs on it, and we'd be set. Of course, that'd mean someone would have to know how to set it up....... Not me thats for sure

Anyhow, I just wanted to put my hand up for chipping in if we need to get a server for us all to use. I'll look around and see what offers are around the place.

I was thinking about it (not really all that hard mind you )... is there anyone here who would object to doing a project open-source style? I mean, the benefits regarding the problem with servers is obvious (we'd get to use source forge) and provided a fitting license was picked, it'd be okay.

I was browsing through the licenses, and the Artistic License stood out as appropriate in this case (http://www.opensource.org/licenses/artistic-license.html). So what does everyone think? Does doing an open source project raise anyone's hackles?

I'm considering opening a site to host Christian gaming company sites, report on there news, etc. but this is of course, in the future.

We've been talking about open-source stuff over in the "Game Projects". I'm trying to see if I can hook up such a thing via Perl/JavaScript/HTML so people can do stuff like that. It's going to take some development time, but I think it would be a cool project in and of itself

Check over there for details.

The design, by the way, would support standard page creations as well. Man issue is disk space...but I'm going to talk with my Server Provider to see how much space I can have. Currently I have tons, but it'll get eaten up pretty quickly with a bunch of graphics files and such.

As you may have seen in other threads, I've found a potential hoster.

HomewithGod.com offers a rich variety of features for free, including 50 megs of storage.

As far as hosting, if you register your domain through them (only $15 per year or $27 for two years), they will give you free redirection or forwarding. I'm trying this out now for my main site graceworksinteractive.com. It may not be forwarding their yet (if NBCI banner is still at the top, then you know it isn't). I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

So far, the biggest advantage is the webmaster is really responsive to Email! Excellent, excellent & excellent.

The biggest disadvantage is there is no FTP access, have to upload via browser. A big pain if you have a lot of small files. Another disadvantage is some file extensions won't up load (like *.zip and the extensions for my game files). Some of these can be added but apparently some are locked out (like the *.zip)!

If anyone finds something else, please post.

Thanks,
Tim

Krylar, where are you hosted now? How much disk space do you currently use and how much do you need? Any idea how much bandwidth you currently use in a month?

My Christian.net project is beginning to take shape (in my mind and on paper - there's still nothing much on the web site) and although I'm not opening it up to commercial projects (at least not yet) I may be willing to host christiancoders.com if you need it.

I'm going to be ordering a brand new box today for the exclusive use of the Christian.net project and you could be the first site to use it You'd get the latest and greatest versions of Apache, PHP, Perl, MySQL, SSL, etc. running on a fast, stable, and secure server.

Hiya,

I'm hosted now with DreamHost and I have roughly 30 sites on there. I appreciate the offer, but with all the work I do on all of those it's easier for me to keep things together.

Thanks!

Ok, that's cool - just thought I'd offer.
