So I'm thinking about breaking down here. I am thinking of buying an iPod for the purposes of something to do while I go running. So I would like to know which one would be good. My gut reaction is just get an 80 gb iPod classic for about 250. Nanos and Shuffles are straight out... they are WAY too small. My concern is this. Do the classic iPods have a traditional hard drive that will be damaged while they are being used while I am running? ------------------ |

I don't think it would be damaged, but if you're really concerned about that, why not get a little cheap mp3 player from Wal-Mart for when you run? Creative's Zen Stone for example. |

quote: Most people run with iPods--so my presumption would be no----the only thing that has made me sightly less of an iPod fan (they are still cool tho) is their less-than-standard file sotrage system which makes it nearly impossible to put music on it and share that music with something else such as a PS3 (even music you have that wasn't bought in iTunes). So, I started buying CDs in iTunes, burning them to a CD-RW, copying them to my PS3 (since doing so removes DRM tags) and using my PS3 as my music hub and PSP as a portable 2 gig music player--my 30 gig iPod is now being used as a portable hard drive--so still cool but I wish Apple would hurry up and adopt a far more user friendly system so all my toys could work together more nicely. ------------------ |

quote: Well, If I am gonna get one, I'm gonna go all the way. I would find it very useful to have in other situations, however those other situations alone would not merit the purchase. However, 15 bucks is pretty cheap.... Zookey. I use iTunes as my media player, I do not however have much actually purchased through the store. I'm traditional in the sense that i purchase albums from a store. I then take these and copy them to my computer using iTunes. When it copies them it copies then in m4a format. Which is a variation of the m4p format. The m4p format is what itunes purchases come in, which requires a password and all. m4a is not a "protected" file but it uses the same compression techniques. I know windows Media player will not play these files but Real player will. I use this format because it's very efficient. I have over 4500 songs and that's going at about 17 gb right now. It would be probably 2 to 3 times as much if they were mp3s. *all that* just to ask how this interacts with other devices as you have previously mentioned. ------------------ [This message has been edited by InsanePoet (edited October 22, 2007).] |

quote: Yes they have a traditional laptop-like hard drive that will get damage if you drop it pretty hard. The hard drives have cushioning that prevents bumps from jogging and light drops from destroying the hard drive.

quote: Well, $15 was the armband. A 1GB Creative Zen Stone is $35, 2GB is $65. My wife has a 2GB one, she uses it in the car, when working out, at her job, no problems at all. The only minor downside is it only charges through the USB port on the computer. I haven't tried it with my wall-to-usb phone charger because I didn't want to screw it up, but in theory, the connections match |

Yeah hehe---well the file type isn't what is non-standard, it is the fact that iTunes renames the songs as it is putting them on your iPod---all the names are 4 digits long and all letters (so like HSOE)---which means, when I explore my iPod on my PS3, all the files are weird looking--this is to work with the iPod's DRM stuff as well as the unique file searching that lets you look up based on a number of tags---altho I bet the DRM stuff could be removed without affecting the tags---but Apple has only started down the DRM free road so it will be a while before it is all the way there---oh well hehe----I used to be old fashioned too, but I have been spoiled, usually when I like a song, I only like one song off of the entire album so it is far easier to buy that one song than to drop 12-20 bucks for it--sadly most artists today don't put out good complete albums, once in a while a treasure rises up tho! ------------------ |

I have a Zen V, too. Didn't want to spend more money on an ipod that does less and breaks more easily. That and I was pretty annoyed at Apple for only letting you connect to an iPod with iTunes. They get greedy like that. So, I made the move off of iTunes and use WMP, instead. I'm pretty happy with it. Use it in situations where I'll have to wait, working out, doing yard work, etc. ------------------ |
