leet is slang used by elite hackers (hence the name "leet," a contracted form of "elite") online like in forums and online gaming. it uses alphanumerics instead of letters. here is a basic leet alphabet:

A B C D E F G H I J K L M
@ |3 ( |) 3 |= 6 |-| 1 _| |< |_ |\/|
N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z
|\| 0 |? 0_ |2 5 7 |_| \/ \/\/ >< '/ 2

there are many different versions of each letter. you can learn how to "speak" leet at http://the.mysterious.alex.googlepages.com/, or there is a leetspeak generator where you type something and it translates it into leet.

one last note: if you know blitz basic, then will you please look at the need help with blitz basic thread in the help wanted section of the forums? thx

Welcome to CCN leet hacker!

This thread gives me deja vu...

The only other human language I would be willing to take the time to learn is Arabic. But I just don't have to time to program in people speak these days

Welcome to CCN! Be concerned though that many of the skilled hackers who practice hacking as opposed to cracking don't use l33t much. Especially those that treat hacking as a life style. I'll check into your other thread though!

thanx for the welcome! in leetspeak, hacker is used to mean someone who is super-skilled in that online game or whatever, like, you could say "|)00|) 1363|\||)$ 1$ 73|-| |_|3|2 1337 |-|@><0|2" which means, in regular english "dude, legends [the player's screen name] is an extremely good player."

ah, so you don't mean hacker as in someone who manipulates a site's security into giving a satisfactory effect.

Hey leet hacker. Welcome to CCN. If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? Please don't take offense to the question, I'm just curious.

Correct, that's technically a cracker, though popular culture often misuses the terms and mixes them up.

Regardless, welcome to CCN, l33t!

That's a cracker, not a hacker. The media screwed up the names and still won't change

HanClinto: Not neccesarily. Crackers are those who use their knowledge to cause destruction, and trouble. Hackers may also use the same methods Crackers use but with the intent on assisting.

Ex. Cracker.
Sam forgot password, and put it in the source. Cracker finds it and blackmails it.

Ex. Hacker.
Sam forgot password, and put it in the source. Hacker finds it, and gives it to Sam, and assists him in knowing how to protect it better.

At least that's what I know. Hacker's break in for good, Crackers for bad, they both use alot of the same techniques, but do totally different stuff.

Note that I didn't talk about viruses or retrieval. I didn't use viruses, or break in for the purpose of not talking about a cracker.

Hackers don't just break in (wether for good or for fun on their own system, say) they do a whole lot more (such as write Unix clones and stuff like that ). But this is going off topic and you've got the point so I'll stop here.

Actually, "@|\/|&n" is simpler than experienced leet users (like me ) try to use. We try to use no regular letters at all; and also we don't put spaces between letters (no offense, kenman).

I was always under them impression that Cr/Hacker referred to the method used to access unauthorized systems or information.
A cracker manipulates existing code or creates their own programs which convince the security system that they are in fact authorized to use the system or access the information or become invisible to the security system. A hacker either makes their own programs or someone elses to attempt to the same thing but by either finding an unsecured pathway or creating something to intercept data or distract the security system long enough to accomplish their goal or trying to brute force entry by trying thousands of security codes on a target.

Here's the definition of hacker, written by hackers who called themselves hackers long before computer security was even an issue:

hacker: n.
[originally, someone who makes furniture with an axe]
1. A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary. RFC1392, the Internet Users' Glossary, usefully amplifies this as: A person who delights in having an intimate understanding of the internal workings of a system, computers and computer networks in particular.
2. One who programs enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming rather than just theorizing about programming.
3. A person capable of appreciating hack value.
4. A person who is good at programming quickly.
5. An expert at a particular program, or one who frequently does work using it or on it; as in ‘a Unix hacker’. (Definitions 1 through 5 are correlated, and people who fit them congregate.)
6. An expert or enthusiast of any kind. One might be an astronomy hacker, for example.
7. One who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations.
8. [deprecated] A malicious meddler who tries to discover sensitive information by poking around. Hence password hacker, network hacker. The correct term for this sense is cracker.
The term ‘hacker’ also tends to connote membership in the global community defined by the net (see the network. For discussion of some of the basics of this culture, see the How To Become A Hacker FAQ. It also implies that the person described is seen to subscribe to some version of the hacker ethic (see hacker ethic).
It is better to be described as a hacker by others than to describe oneself that way. Hackers consider themselves something of an elite (a meritocracy based on ability), though one to which new members are gladly welcome. There is thus a certain ego satisfaction to be had in identifying yourself as a hacker (but if you claim to be one and are not, you'll quickly be labeled bogus). See also geek, wannabee.
This term seems to have been first adopted as a badge in the 1960s by the hacker culture surrounding TMRC and the MIT AI Lab. We have a report that it was used in a sense close to this entry's by teenage radio hams and electronics tinkerers in the mid-1950s.

EDIT: This can be found @: http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/H/hacker.html
EDIT 2: Oops wrong definition. Fixed that.

I shall refrain from talking about hackers/crackers in this thread any longer. I'd suggest a new thread for that
