N64 used to have some of my favorite games. They included stuff like, Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, and F-Zero X. ------------------ I reserve the full right to change my views/theories at any time. |

Virtual Boy was smokin'-awesome. I used to/still play mario tennis The turtle guy rocked, even though he was slow; he could make dive shots. Oh yeah, rockin' on my Amiga was Marble Madness, The Bard's Tale, Aunt Arctic Adventure, and Arkenoid. I miss those games those were the days... I really miss the N64 Battle Tanx game. I'm getting it for Virtual Console for Wii as soon as I obtain a Wii. My favorite weapon is the Nuke. Second favorite weapon was the guided missile. Drop it and drive like heck away from it and hide behind a building. My favorite tank was the one that could roll. I think it was called the Helix or something. ------------------ "Oh, bother," said the Borg. "We've assimilated Pooh." That tank was called the "Flip-E". The game was genius i bought the one for PS2 but it only supports deathmatch multiplayer, not coop like the original. ------------------ |

Wow.. this is when I actually played games! (ugh, I feel old). You want old skool? How about Magic Candle, Bards Tale and Ultima. (ehm.. way before it was online) I played these either at a friend's house or at K-mart.. back when they sold computers. I had a amiga. It had a cool basic programming language you could buy for it called AMOS. I remember opening up a sega genesis pad and soldering a couple of jumpers to be able to read all the buttons on the amiga. I guess as a kid/teen our family went the nintendo route. Here are my favs: SMBs, Zelda, Dragon Warrior, Crystalis, Blaster Master, Megaman 1-4, Bomberman, and my Mom got addicted to Lolo worse than watching soaps. Also, Xenogears on PS1 rocked. I also loved squaresoft's and enix's work on the SNES. FinalFantasy, robotrek, secret of mana, secret of evermore, chrono trigger as well as Link to the past, oh and Earthbound! Our family couldn't afford to buy the games, so we would rent them for three days from the video rental place and (I kid you not) we would play them through straight without stopping. We had very sore eyes and thumbs at the end.. but what a blast. Also I have a love/hate relationship with the Street Fighter series mostly because of my little brother. ------------------ [This message has been edited by samw3 (edited June 29, 2007).] |

N64, Saturn and PSX could only be old school if you're talking old school 3D. Also many people have different terms for what is Retro and Old School. Old School is defined by some people on here as the systems made before NES (aka 1st and 2nd gen systems), while for me I always thought old school was anything before 3D graphics or 5th gen systems (32\64 bit wars), Wikipedia defines it the same way but like I said, everyone has their own definition. My definition: Old School 3D = 5th gen consoles, Old School gaming < 5th gen consoles, Retro Gaming < 3rd gen consoles. BTW, Apogee rocked!!! Duke Nukem 1 & 2, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Crystal Caves, Secret Agent, Raptor, ROTT, Pharaoh's Tomb. Then of course Pre-DOOM iD software was awesome, I loved both the Commander Keen series and Wolf 3D. Other games that were sweet but weren't iD nor Apogee was SimCity 2000, Caesar II, BattleDrome, Oregon Trail (though nowadays I can only bear to play the 2nd one). Psh, who needed Windows? N64 brought the greatest level of innovation to the gaming market for a long long time. Zelda 64, that game, that game alone, Mario 64, those games were 3D versions of 2D games, the developers had to somehow make the 2d games into 3D, that brought a new level of interactivity and innovation, if you look at the mechanics behind these games, it's breathtaking, there is so much to learn from them. Jet Force Gemini, love the sound track to that game |

I still say, that playing PONG in "Black and White" graphics, is the ultimate old school. Has anyone here ever seen a video game in Black and White? lol Atari, later came out with PONG in color on their 2600 4 bit machine. |
Lava Member Posts: 1905 From: Registered: 01-26-2005 |
quote: I wouldn't agree that's true, unless the person had no knowledge of the systems that came before; like someone who thought N64 was the first console ever made could compare it to newer systems and say it's old school (complete old school, not just old school 3D), but that would have to be an ideal circumstance of ignorance. I believe the definition can be also defined by going to the actual word "old school" meaning old school of thought. The reason I say N64 is "old school 3D" is because back in the PSX and N64 days 3D games were made different than games like GC, Xbox and PS2, not only in gameplay but philosophy. The same goes for games of the 16 bit days and before. Even 2D games back then were made different than the 2D games of today that you'll mostly see on GBA. One of the big guys that worked on 007 and PD (at rare) started the company "Free Radical Design" and made the Timesplitter games. If you've played 007 you may remember a random character named "Dr. Doak" which at the time made no sense to me cause it wasn't a bond character. Very easy to see the ages of the users who are saying 'old skool'. You truely cannot get more old school than black and white pong. for the few of us who had it we remember the beep. We didn't actaully have the pong version, we hand the downgraded sears version. Next came the 2600 with 50 pong games. tank vs. tank? and one other shooting game. Most of ours were the sears knock offs. If you ain played the pong console you have been to old school. I wonder what kind of processer was in that machine or memory. My guess is probably around .25 mhz with 1/8K or less of memory (had to be some memory to retain scores) theoretically could be done with 1/32 K. The N 64 was a major step up in life! ------------------ If you ain't in the forums, you in the againstums :) |

ahhh old school. Back in the day when impossible difficulty was standard and completing the game was considered a rare feat. Dizzy.
Who here actually COMPLETED one of his games? I beat one of them: Kwik Snax. Think a pacman clone where instead of bars blocking your path it was blocks and you could push the blocks around off one edge of the screen and back onto the other side. My very very first computer game... I mean VERY first. Fast food. A dizzy game. Again a pacman clone where the pellets ran away from you. |

All those arcade devices had one huge fatal flaw. Where are you going to set your drink? The control panel is sloped for your wrist so there is no way you can set a drink down while playing. Enter the first video game I ever played. Space Invaders T.T. with two tees for a double dose of table top action. They were popular in bars and the best part was I could stand on the chair to see and set down my sippy cup of juice while I played. Rawk! |

The only thing I remember about the SMS was playing it a Toys-R-Us once and using the 3D glasses with some space game. It was pretty cool, but a little uncomfortable because I wore glasses already. ------------------ |

quote: The original Pong arcade and home systems had no processor whatsoever. The logic of the game was hard-coded into the integrated circuits on the board. There was no programming involved whatsoever, no RAM, just solid state logic. It had a memory of sorts while powered up--not block memory (RAM or ROM), just various boolean states held here and there in the circuitry. Ever wonder why there are no Pong emulators, only recreations? An "emulator" would have to be the exact circuit design running in a circuit simulator. There is no Pong ROM. ------------------ |

I would just like to say THANKS to everyone in this thread. I just purchased 13 NES games and a new Advantage Joystick (err...new to me, my 2 old ones don't work anymore): Megaman 3 This is on top of my currently owned games (some of these I just bought I've owned previously but lost/loaned/etc.. over the years). I'll put up a full list of the others I have when I get home tonight. Oh yeah, and the joystick: |

I liked the arcade-style games best because I was too poor to have a console at home. My favorites when I was in HS were Defender, Galaga, Summer Games, and Donkey Kong. Later, I really liked Dragon's Lair because it used a laser-disc to show a cartoon. |

Here's some old-skool NeoGeo that I miss: Metal Slug! I have played almost every version and sequel of that game. ------------------ "Oh, bother," said the Borg. "We've assimilated Pooh." play a sega master system?!?! i owned one awesome times.... anyway, just thought i'd rant about how great cartridge games were, well aside from one of the copies of A Link to the Past which had a dead battery so it wouldn't save for longer than 10 minutes.... ------------------ |

I'm a huge SNK fan, and I love all the games released by them since as early as the NES years back when Ikari and Athena came out. I also loved Psycho Soldier. My favorite games of all time is the Dragon Quest Series and Breath of Fire 2 & 3. I also loved Terranigma (I wish it would come out on the DS!). |

Breath of Fire 2 was amazing! I have BoF3 but its just not the same as having great characters like Sten or Spar ------------------ |

Gameboy Player for Gamecube? Is that an accessory you attach, then it plays the Gameboy cartidges on a Gamecube console? That'd r0x0r (if they had a SNES Player like that, I'd have to go and snag a Gamecube for <$90, eh?). What do people tend to think about the current-tech consoles (such as PS2) that have had released compilations of old skool games, like the Atari, Sega, Taito, Capcom collections? You get at least 20 games for around $20 (in the case of Atari collection, 87 games). This probably isn't a great option for people who already own(ed) the actual console (one reason why I'm not too into the Wii Virtual Console idea; why pay a second time for games I already own?). However, for gamers who either weren't around "back in the day", or just weren't entirely up-to-date with which games are great (thinking, e.g., Zelda would never amount to anything), the compilations are a pretty nice way to catch up. I own the Atari, Namco (volume 1 and 3), Taito, and Sega Genesis collections, and I've been eyeing Capcom and Midway. Catches everything from Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man to Bubble Bobble, Centipede, Lunar Lander, Warlords, Dig-Dug, crazy stuff like Phantasy Star II-IV. |

i have the GBA attachment for gamecube and it rocks to play splinter cell and use it as a map. i wasn't a big fan of the compilation discs for ps2 although i DID consider getting the sonic one. Phantasy Star 4 was the best of the series ------------------ |

Since we're going into the 32/64bit era, let's up the ante for Super Angel Steve's list with: -Crash Bandicoot (I only own 2, but the series is pretty uniform) -Ape Escape ("If you don't have one, get one!") Probably the most original take on the 3D platform formula, incorporating Metal Gear Solid-like elements of stealth to run around capturing a bunch of paranoid superintelligent monkeys, all with the still-unmatched utility of the PlayStation's Dual Shock controller. -Tomba (I own the second one) Another neat take on the (2D) platform formula, this one ramming in RPG elements. I recently saw the first game in the used bin at a store, and I occasionally kick myself for not snagging it. Other than catching monkeys, is anything more fun than beating up on Evil Pigs as a half-clothed jungle man with pink hair? -My personal RPG obsession era, including Star Ocean 2, Legend of Dragoon, and the ever controversial Xenogears (beyond the Final Fantasies, of course). -Some of the early classics, Twisted Metal and Jet Moto, to round out the list. |

quote: They actually made one for the SNES a while back called Super Gameboy, I believe. You just stick gameboy games in the cartrige and play them in the SNES. And the old school gameboy games (like Pokemon Red & Blue) would be in color, too. |
