So, what are your favorite things to listen to while developing?
I find that bands like underoath, as cities burn, inhale exhale, haste the day and a few others really help me concentrate on what I'm doing. Go figure since a lot of people cant stand the screaming... but it helps me so do you like listening to music while coding? what?

i wonder if people prefer different genre's for different languages?

This question has been raised before, but my musical tastes and coding styles have changed since then. I currently listen to a lot of Industrial Rock, non-screaming non-same-3-chords-and-lines-over-and-over-again rock, classical, trance (mainly just Infected Mushroom), and classical Iranian/Persian music. I also play movies minimized and listen to just the audio, as well as listen to podcasts.

Ohhh… Jars of Clay, Bjorn Lynn, Mozart, sometimes I’ll just turn on XM and listen to the Audio Visions or Watercolors. Other than that I just listen to talk radio (AM) as I work.

I listen to a variety of music while coding. Randomly between the following:

The Heavier groups include:
Disciple (their older CDs are my favorite), Wyrick, Underoath, Inhale Exhale, Destroy the Runner, Demon Hunter, Project 86, East West, Nonpoint, Metallica, Disturbed, Tourniquet

The semi-heavy groups include:
Skillet, P.O.D., Justifide, Pillar, Linkin Park, Red, Seventh Seal, Shinedown, Chevelle, Crossfade, Breaking Benjamin

The softer groups include:
Third Day, Jars of Clay, Switchfoot, 12 Stones

DEAD SILENCE... except my computer's fan i guess.
I get too distracted with music. I start listening too much to it and I loose focus.

Many years ago (90's) I used to program to Marillion's "Misplaced Childhood" on a daily basis.

Now I listen to all sorts of stuff. I am now a Pandora fan and mostly stick with these stations I have created:

Electronic Music: Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre, etc.
Jam Rock: Satriani, Vinnie Moore, Ozric Tentacles, Djam Karet, etc.
Paul Oakenfold: Techno, upbeat, drums & bass, etc.
Progressive Rock: Old Genesis, Old Yes, Karnataka, IQ, Marillion, etc.
Smooth Jazz: David Sanborn, Marcus Miller, Brecker Brothers, etc.

Some Christian ones too, but they are limited and you keep hearing the same things over and over.

Right now I'm listening to a band called Liquid Tension Experiment on my Jam Rock station. Song is called Chewbacca and it just totally rocks if you like guitar jamming. Never heard of them before Pandora.

Wooow someone listens to Tangerine dream as development motivational music good stuff, just love them groovy textures. As for my responses, I wouldn't really entirely relate them to coding time, often more during modelling, animating, texturing, writing etc... mostly cowpunk for everything else

Punk/Ska: Capdown, RX Bandits, Link 80, Anti-Flag, Millencolin, Zero Down, Frenzal Rhomb and others.

Experimental: Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Regina Spektor

Others: Thin Lizzy, Alanis Morrisette, Sublime... all depends on mood really. But this is what I listen to right now when coding.

Faith_Warrior, yep! Tangerine Dream used to be one of my faves. I have over 70 CDs and LPs from them. Their "Poland" and "Livemiles" albums are more of my favorites for coding.

BTW, I looked up that Liquid Tension Experiment and found out it is composed of several individual musicians I know from other bands, so although I had never heard of the band, I knew some of the individual members.

Although I sometimes code to space music (planeterium, ethereal), I tend to like more upbeat stuff. Helps energize and fire me up! I really enjoy software development and upbeat just goes with the whole excitement I get.

Yeah thats totally true! i'll turn on some music, start coding and all of the sudden (although i dont notice it right away) the music will just fade out and then later i'll be like "OH! here comes my favorite part..... wait.... i'm past that part already?"

@Mack: Those are good online radio stations. I used to listen to chirstianrock.net alllll the time! Lately i've just been listening to my own cd's though... Another good station i like, with more variety, radiou.com

Metal:
Amon Amarth
Soilwork
Metallica
Chimaira
Etc.

Trance:
di.fm (lots of playlists there)
Astral Projection

Industrial:
KMFDM!
Rammstein (industrialish)

And I don't really know where System of a Down fits. I hate the term "alternative."

Mack, I like your style.

Crazy, I'm a big fan of Amon Amarth and Soilwork, too. I listen to the Metallica as well, though I wouldn't tell most people and I only listen to their older stuff. Here's what I listen to usually while pumping out the C++:

Metal: The Haunted, Soilwork, Opeth, In Flames, Living Sacrifice, Extol, etc

Other: Elliott Smith, Denali, Morrissey, Starflyer 59, etc

This is definitely dependent on how long I've been coding. At work, I usually have to work in silence. When I'm not on the job, though, I'll often listen to Underoath and Demon Hunter while coding. I usually just need something that takes up as much of my excess attention as possible so I don't get distracted.

I found this article interesting, while I listen to more hardcore music because I enjoy the complexity and strong emotions involved. Same reason why I enjoy classical and opera music.

Metal. Probably the manliest music in the world.
Now there is a music that will put some hair on your back.

Pure testosterone in audible form.

except the 80's shirtless, leather pants, makeup wearing, huge curly hair swinging metal heads. that's just gay.

oh, and I do enjoy classical. just got this piece by Smetana. Die Moldau. beautiful.

Metal is like injecting tetosterones via ears.

"Ma Vlast" is the entire piece by Smetana you are referring to. I have a great recording of it. Die Moldau or "The River" is by far my most favorite piece in Ma Vlast.

oh I believe the "80's shirtless" metal you are referring to is called "glam metal"

Take it back! Showbread is absolutely amazing!

Seriously, they're awesome.

Metal tends to actually keep me calm and focused, that's probably why I like it so much for when I'm coding. I'm kind of weird like that.

If the coding is going well, though, I tend to prefer something a little more punk in nature.

the music I listen depends more on my mood then what I'm doing (with exception of working out).
the music I listen to is vast. vast indeed. when driving in the car with me, you'll be exposed to classical, blues, oldies, rock, metal, norwegian gypsy rock... ...instrumental, goth, soundtrack, not emo, hip hop, alternative...
but I'll more likely listen to instrumental, classical and more background music when coding. gotta keep the concentration.

You have a point, but only not 100%

If the headstock would have been 4 string, then it would have been a
Bass Bass Guitar, not a Bass Guitar.

Thank you for your concern . . .

BTW, its a largemouth bass guitar

Newsboys, jars of clay, third day, dallas holm and praise, etc.

But, have you guys ever noticed that listening to music is easier, when you are doing graphics?

I have trouble listening when I'm coding.

Does that mean that making graphics is easier on your brain?

I wonder. lol
