This fortnight's interview is with ArchAngel!

How did you find out about CCN?[\b]
Back in the days before I had chest hair, I was looking up Christian games and I came across a Christian gaming site and it had a link to CCN. I thought to myself, "Self, this is a pretty cool... let's check it out. oooh, it has a showcase. I can use it to put games I want to make." and so I came to become a CCN member. Now... 5 years and 3k posts later, I still haven't put anything in the showcase.

[b]What kind of job do you have?
Currently, I'm a student in IT (pretty much renting laptops to students and occasionally fixing their problems. wireless, relationships, etc) at the campus/city library. But I just picked up an internship at NASA (will be starting that in a week. Thanks for the prayers guys)

Do you enjoy your job at the campus/city library?
Yeah. It's pretty laid back. The guys are fun to hang with and there is a sense of accomplishment in solving problems. Especially if it's a hot girl with a simple laptop problem (perk of campus jobs).

Do you expect to enjoy your internship at NASA?
As of now, I'm pretty intimidated. I never did something as intense and I need to learn Fast Fourier Transforms and Pattern Analysis fast. But unlike other internships, I'll be pretty independent in my work (instead of just following some guy around and getting him coffee), so I'm excited.

How old are you? How long have you been working with computers?
I am 21 years old. I didn't really start using a computer alot until Jr. High when we moved. The family computer was moved out of my parents room. As for programming/working with computers, my Dad got me started on that when I was around 9. Didn't understand a thing, but it got me started.

What was it about the computer that interested you?
I'd be lying if I didn't say gaming. That's what first got me into messing around. Started out with Civ2 (and even Gauntlet on my old Zenith) and it just went on from there. I learned alot just trying to get different things to work, from networking games, fixing registry problems and just changing files around to personalize the game.

What is it about the computer that interests you now?
Now? Well, gaming. Actually, my interest has expanded. I became quite fond of coding and development and the Internet (from communication to just browsing) takes much of my time. But to summarize, it's power; the computer is the future.

Are you a coder? What IDE do you use?
I am, in fact, a coder. My binary pillow, courtesty of thinkgeek, will testify to that. My favored IDE, currently, is Visual Studio 2005 .NET. It takes alot of the rote work out of programming. And when it comes to Java I use Eclipse.

What languages do you know/program in?
As of now, C# (C# + VS .NET = teh winz), Java, IA Assembly and C. C++, Visual Basic and Basic are deprecated. Gonna work on relearning C++ and picking up PHP and Ajax.

What operating system(s) do you normally use? Why do you use them?
I'm normally on Windows XP. Most everything I want runs on it. And, honestly, if you know how to care for your computer, Windows can treat you pretty well (like a high maintenance girl, just not as pretty).

What other operating systems do you semi-frequently use? Why do you use them?
I used Unix (Solaris) occasionally at school. I'm looking into getting either a Linux box up or at least a dualboot. I have a Suse [Linux] sitting in my room, doing nothing. Quite sad. Quite.

What other things do you enjoy doing on a computer?
Besides gaming, coding, chatting, and surfing?.... Playing music?

Do you prefer Email or Instant messaging when communicating with someone?
Instant messaging. Email is too slow.

What kind of Email/Chat client do you use? What's it's name?
Email: just in-browser stuff. uUsed to use Microsoft Outlook, then Mozilla Thunderbird, but I decided it wasn't for me.
Chat client: Trillian when I'm on my laptop and Meebo everywhere else.

What are the specs of your home and/or work computers?
I currently have only a laptop, which has:
AMD 64 Athlon 3200+ 2.2 ghz processor.
1g DDR ram
ATI Radeon Xpress 200

I plan on putting together a RAID system. Say goodbye to boot time and hello to hard drive failure. hoo-ah.

Do you have a game console? If so what is it and why did you buy it?
Sega Genesis (which was given. Oh, great Genesis. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...)
Sega Dreamcast (can you tell I like Sega?)
I had a GBA Advance SE, but my brother just recently lost it. Luckily, I don't really care.

If you have a game console, what was your first?
The Sega Genesis was the first.

Do you touch the graphics field of computing very often (such as modeling, or 2D art, etc)?
I draw some sprites. Haha. I looked into modelling a little, and I might want to mess around. But it's mostly been sprites and concept art for me.

Do you have any opinions on net neutrality?
First of all, all operations on the web aren't neutral. Secondly, the government has no business putting it's hand in this cookie jar. Third, I'd have to say this is the "solution searching for a problem." Are we really being pushed back to the end of the queue, never being able to peruse our favorite forum (aka CCN)? Fourth, Senator Ted Stevens scares me: http://www.truthdig.com/eartotheground/item/20060704_stevens_internet_ignorance/

Net Neutrality is a cause held up by computer illiterate politicians who are trying desperately to scratch a name for themselves in the hall of meaningless pursuits.

Do you believe in freedom (primarily in software) the was the FSF believes in it?
I believe the option for GNU licensing should be open, but by no means should it be a standard.
People should have a right to their code and it's up to them if they wish to free it or not.

Do you have a favorite movie or TV show?
Movies: Lord of the Rings, 300, Thank You For Smoking, etc
TV Show: Simpsons, South Park, Top Gear

What other non-computer hobbies do you have?
I like to work on my car, from standard care (like tire rotations and oil changes) to tuning it (got a WR short ram intake and looking at the Flowmaster 40 series delta flows. Probably wanna key my spark plugs...)
I also play the bass, shoot a couple hoops, a little weight training, and clubbing baby seals .

How would you describe your relationship with Christ?
Ahhh... this question has always been hard to answer. Not as well as I'd like, but better than it was, at times. Well, I drew you a rather large range there. To be more specific, I'm getting too caught up in everything around and many times lose focus.

How do you imagine a way that you could use your talents and experiences to serve Christ?
Honestly, not really. I can't really code the poor kids in Africa some food and water. I'll just do what I do and leave God's plan for God to plan.

What kind of geeky projects do you see yourself doing within the next couple of years?
Well... the geeky projects I'm doing now are:
- Playing around with programmable 3-way accelerometers to see what I can do with it (with enough practice... I can make a Wii for the computer. It's pretty sweet. I've been working right now on a way to make a circle on the screen follow the movement of the sensor).

- Working on a UT mod with some friends.

- Coding a small rpg independently

- Developing a php-based mmorpg (with a couple guys here on CCN... sry it's on haitus)

These projects will probably last me a while.

Great interview!

And lest I be viewed as un-original for saying that about the last interview....

CPU, your interviews belong in this book.

Another fine review. Cool stuff.

Except for this part: "Especially if it's a hot girl with a simple laptop problem (perk of campus jobs)."

How about a little more respect for the ladies, yeah?

I just realized you two have the same first name.

Feel special, guys:

Tim is the #170 most common male name.
0.104% of men in the US are named Tim.
Around 127400 US men are named Tim!

My real first name is like the 76th most common male name...

meh.. double post.

but I'll take this opportunity to answer Xian's post:

Xian, I have the deepest respect for women. why,....

.... wait, oooohhhh... you're talking about respect for their character...

actually, in all honesty, I don't see how calling a girl "hot" is disrespectful. then again, I live in California and the implications of the term is diluted.

as for simple laptop problems... well... it's true.

It's that their appearance is your main concern that annoys me. Terribly shallow.

And I can fix my own simple laptop problems, thanks.

Uhm. The world was created by a few words.

RAID system, Arch? Those are cool. They can be quite expensive, though.

I forgot you played bass. That's cool.

lol. I never implied women can't fix their computers. I just said there were alot of girls who can't. there also alot of guys who can't.
Be careful on your inferences.

Appearances are important. God made beauty and gave it to us (I can go into the biological importances of beauty, but I won't). He never claimed it was bad; all that is really said is that beauty is fleeting. It's nothing to base something on. It has always been a compliment in the Bible to call a woman beautiful.
Now, how sad would it be for a husband to not find his wife attractive?

If you assume that I value girls only on appearance, you are completely in the wrong and I would suggest that reevaluate your judgments. I can easily be friends with plain girls. I could never be friends with hottie who is annoying or untrustworthy.

Guess what, I'm honest with myself. I value looks. I wouldn't consider dating a girl I didn't find attractive. But I know beauty is fleeting and there are more important things. I need a girl I can get along with and most importantly, trust and respect.

I find it interesting that you somehow can pinpoint my main concern without having one conversation with me. Not even a conversation over the web. A bit presumptuous, perhaps? enough to insult me through your signature?

I posted this over in your other thread, and should just leave it there instead of derailing your interview thread, but I felt it worth posting this again.

Honestly, this is the first post I can think of where I've seen you talk about girls in the fashion that you have (emphasizing the important signs of respect), but I can think of a lot more where you've made comments to hot girls, etc. The ratio of comments in your posts led me to believe that you had the big and small things reversed. I'm glad to see that I'm wrong. I just want you to see how it is I came to the conclusions that I had.

Not everyone is going to have a "real" conversation with you to know what you really think; instead, it's your first impressions that will affect the way people think about you. Given what I've seen in your posts, how likely is it that I would think your main concern to be anything other that appearance? First impressions make and break just about everything.

I do agree that acknowledging beauty can be a compliment (I do that), but I rarely picked up on the compliment vibe of your comments. I need to be using more tact when I say these things, and give you a little more benefit of the doubt, but I figure that you would value blatancy over subtlety.

figures that it's mine which goes into a debate. fine with me. I love it that way. But... I guess we shouldn't derail it.

Well, it's talking about you and the views expressed in the interview, so is it really offtopic?

If I started talking about the Dekker book I'm reading or the mosquitoe flying around my ear, now that would be offtop... sorry.

Weird... except for the slightly faster 64-bit processor my desktop is just like your laptop, Arch. (Well, sorta... at least in those three areas)
I bet mine was cheaper...

I don't know if it's just me, but there's something completely ironic and even contradicting about your post and the ones like it about this topic...

To summarize (as the post seemed to me) you say that Arch only looks at appearances, YET-- you admit that is based on Arch's first posting appearance.

To me you are looking at Arch the same way you claim he sees women-- by appearances.

But do you judge Arch based on your first impression? I have no idea-- I don't know you in the real world and EVEN then that would have to be something only God knows and SHOULD know. So I believe that is all Arch is asking from you and Moira.

Honestly,
LAVA
