I just discovered Google Documents. Very handy when I don't have open office around. I might upload a bunch of my files too.

Now on to my main point with one Google Account you can:
Have an email account
An online office app
A news page and news search engine
A search engine
An RSS reader
A calendar
A translator
A social networking thing
Upload videos
Search your desktop

Google is trying to take over your computer. Even though their moto is "don't be evil" and they aren't Microsoft... I don't like this. I enjoy using their services, but I have my preferences (ie, a local office app on my hard drive, and Beagle Desktop Search). Once Google invades the desktop market a bit more, I probably will not use their invasive products. I don't like the idea of someone else possibly controlling what I do (which is one reason why I do use windows any more except for a couple games).

This is just a thought I've been contemplating.

I'm loving all google is doing... at GG we have a google business account and it works great for networking multiple things within the office, e-mail management, documents, and calendars especially.

it is understandable to be afraid of 'big brother'---and goodness knows M$ taught us the true meaning of that fear with some of their crap---but, at the same time, if you like the service use it---if it forces things on you that you don't like then don't---if a lot of people don't use it for those reasons Google will be pressured to fix the situation, which (in theory) leaves the consumers in the driver's seat.

"consumer" and a word like "driver"(implying leadership) doesn't really go well together. it's what i call the "herd" mentality, some people will do whatever anyone tells them, and buy whatever anyone tells them they should buy. on the microsoft/linux thing...i recently installed opensuse on a computer, and what i've used of it a really, really, really, like it! it's user friendly, not too bloated like fedora, and it doesn't have sudo like the ubuntu variants...i think i finally found a distro that is very close to what i've been wanting.

I don't know about you guys, but I'd sell my soul to Google.

I think many will. Google may seem good now, but like any tool it can be misused, and in the hands of someone evil, all that was once compiled and used for good can be used for evil.

Uploading / connecting everything you do on all your computer's to Google Systems is not wise.

Uploading / connecting certain portions, systems, or task groups to Google Systems can be a good thing, depending on what you want or need to do.

I just would never recommend someone to install Google Desktop on their main or only computer. There are privacy issues which Google might not abuse but on which laws have not yet been passed (or at least nothing good to date) in consideration thereof.

One only has to look at AT&T customer privacy agreement and the events leading up to that change to know the world (or the US at least) isn't quite ready for Desktop Online in its purest form.

I switched back.

I haven't liked Google since they sold out to the Chinese government, though.(IMPO, of course)

Here we go (again). The real point here is what makes you more productive and saves you most time (and not how much money Google makes).
You can sure use Outlook instead of Gmail, Office instead of Google Docs (and in some cases that's the right thing to do), etc., etc., but you'll do it at your own cost (i.e time, money). I pretty much use every google service there is (email, docs, googlepages, googlegroups, googlebookmarks, googlepack/Updater) except google desktop which I don't find yet to be very practical.
Anyways you're mistaken to believe Google is the 21th century Microsoft. Google has at least one viable competitor: Yahoo. Yahoo follows suit Google and imitates pretty much everything Google does (i.e. Gmail, Ajax technology, etc.) which keeps Google under pressure and in check.
