I ordered a fretless bass today. Now begins the true test of manhood!

How things have changed from the time when a boy simply joined the Army to attain his manhood...

Military service is the alternative for people who cannot handle the fretless bass.

I prefer guitar. Never played anything fretless though.. How do you tell where the notes are? Does it have lines or anything? I bet its easier to do some of the pyrotechnics with one.. like slides and stuff. Good luck with that!

cool, just remember never to slap or pop and you'll be fine.

BTW I found the military (although a test of manhood) less stressfull than many of the live performances that I have done

Goop2, you just have to know, know frets, no dots, no lines where the frets would be.. just you and the instrument. A test of stanima and will!

It really depends who is playing it. A bass can be more overbearing than a guitar depending on how its played.

Anybody play air drums? I do, but I'm not very good.. I have trouble keeping a beat. Watching someone play bass it seemed to look quite a bit easier.. No barre chords or anything like that on a bass I tend to play 2 strings when I mean to play one, but bass strings are farther apart.

Yes there are some very simple bass lines out there, however to *really* play the bass, it takes some skill. You can do chords on basses and they sound awesome. Bass can be difficult due to the width of the frets, real stretch for your hands at times, especially with chords.

haha, yeah. stretching your hand over the frets can become painful at times. and I have big hands.
my left hand fingers stretches out further than my right hand because of it.
it's crazy looking.

but, basic bass is easy, good bass is hard.

I immagine it's like the violin: You memorize the location and you play by ear. If the not doesn't sound right, move your finger.
