hey guys have you gotten a scam mail promising you money and stuff like this one:
i got this mail a couple of days ago:

quote:

FROM JOY DANKATA
Abidjan cote D`Ivoire
West Africa.

Dearest One ,
Good thing to write you. I have a proposal for you, this however is not mandatory nor will I in any manner compel you to honour against your will. Your profile pushed me to send you this mail, I am Joy Dankata, a 22 years old and the only Daughter of Mr and Mrs Dankata

My father was a highly reputable business man (a cocoa merchant) who operated in the capital of Ivory coast during his days. It is sad to say that he passed away mysteriously in France during one of his business trips abroad on 12th.August 2002.Though his sudden death was linked or rather suspected to have been master minded by an uncle of his who travelled with him at that time.

But God knows the truth! , My mother died when I was just 6 years old Since then my father took me so special. Before his death on 12 August 2002, he told me about a box he concealed the sum of six million, five hundred thousand United State Dollars.(US$6.5m) deposited in one of the security company here in Abidjan, Ivory coast West Africa, which he disguised and declared the box to contain family valuables instead of money, for security reasons, by this way the company does not know the true content of the box.

The deposit document which I have in my possession carries my late father's name as the depositor, while I'm the next of kin on the same document.
I am just 22 years old and a university undergraduate and really don't know what to do. This is because I have suffered a lot of set backs as a result of incessant political crisis here in Ivory coast. The death of my father actually brought sorrow to my life.

Dear, I am in a sincere desire of your humble assistance in this regards. Your suggestions and ideas will be highly regarded.
Now permit me to ask these few questions:-

1. Can you honestly help me as your daughter?
2. Can I completely trust you?
3. Please, Consider this and get back to me as soon as possible.

Thank you so much
Miss Joy Dankata.

then i replied :
quote:

hi there where did you see my profile?
i'd like to hear your problem more as a Christian i can't turn down a person who needs my help, but the involvement with the money kind of made me sucpicious i hear a lot about west african scams like theses, please take no offense i am just being careful.
.
.
.
.

i also added some personal info. to my reply that i didn't mention in that quote.

then he/she replied and said

quote:

Hello Dear *******,

Thanks you for your mail that i got now and also your promise to me and i am very happy that you reply my mail back May God be with you and your family.

I will like to tell you the truth because the death of my parents brought set back to me but i am only praying to God to send a good person that will help me so that i will move out of this country for better of my life.

So after i got your email address so i went to my Rev Father and he gave me good 7day's fasting and prayer so after that he told me that i should go ahead and contact you that you will help me with all your heart and you will not disappoint me so that is why i am incontact with you and i have made up my mind to move out of this country so that i will come to you and further my education and you will put all the money in your own bank account so that after i finish my education then you will use the money and start up a good investment that will be profiting me and you .

And as i told you before the people that kill my parents is after me now to kill me too so i dont want any body to know my where about untill all this money is release and delivered to you then i will come to your country immediately so please i will like you to send me your full contact address like your phone number and your house address so that i will give you the contact of the security company and i will also send you my picture so that you will see me.

Thanks you and God bless you for helping me

Your's Daughter

Miss Joy

then i said:

Matthew 16:26
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Notice the phrase "all the money in your own bank account". This is a sure sign of a scam (anytime a random email references personal information or a bank account). Not to mention the bad grammar in the email which is generally a sign that it is a scammer from some country where you can't reach them once they steal your personal information/money/etc.

Amazing! 2 identical situations! EVEN THE SAME NAME!! Having the name 'Joy Dankata' must be bad luck!

They always look the same.. I don't think Ive ever seen a unique scam letter. I didn't know they copied the same letter though. Thats interesting.. Did you get a reply?

[edit]My gawsh I'm surprised the second letter wasn't written in 13375935|<
I don't think that person even knows how to write a letter.. Probably hasn't been to 5th grade yet.[/edit]

Anyone who asks me for monetary help, tries to get into "my country", or wants me to fly to some obscure country, Gmail and I (when Gmail doesn't catch messages like this) automatically ignore them. It's the perfect system, someone tries to scam me, I don't waste any time.

I will admit reading their messages and identifying them as scammers by their tracks on the internet is fun.

i personally like the ones where they identify themselves as a leader of a country or the benefactor of a huge sum of money and need your help with spending the money (or similar scenario).
Word of caution though: beware of HTML versions of these scams. some can contain harmful javascript code which is called when you open the email (or "view" it if you have outlook)

Oh crap a flaw. Firefox is my only protection really. I'm too lazy to install a virus checker.. and it uses up the precious memory windows hasn't already wasted.

I have had emails like that too--kinda like what Dog the Bounty Hunter once said, "I get mad when someone mistakes my kindness for weakness"--it is sad that people try to take advantage of a person's drive to help another human being.

Have you heard of "Dean Cameron's Nigerian Spam Scam Scam"?

Apparently this guy, an actor, decided not to just delete the email, but ended up corresponding with the scammer for almost a year or something, working with cops specializing in catching swindlers, to make sure he didn't give them any info they could use.

Then he ended up doing a two-person stage show with it, where he and this other actor read the correspondence between him and the scammer.

At the first performance of it, he collected stuff from the audience to actually send to Nigeria to these people.

There are design aspects which make things like that possible. I roam the web without a virus checker because the software and OS I run don't automatically run every blooming piece of code they come accross on the web.

You're confusing Internet Explorer with Firefox. IE gets the weekly flaws and FF gets the one and one half monthlies.

It's amazing those emails. The more you block them, the more they come back.

Years ago I thought that it was a real misdirected email inquiry.

It get more amazing when they claim to be your friend but don't know how to spell your name. If I go 1 day without getting one of these in my spam box, its like a miracle.
