I forgot this software doesn't like "s in the subject so here's the thread to which you can reply to:

Ever since I got Satellite internet my current Linux distro's were always subject to the most stable of unstable updates (which aren't always as stable as they could be). Do any of you have this "addiction"? If you don't why? I constantly update because there are so many new features and improvements... do you think I should consider slower developing distros like Debian or openSUSE?

I'm trying not to upgrade every package that my system has updates for because the unstability is causing a few problems. (Laz which rehab center should I go to?)

Well i still run the 2.4 kernel. I don't need most of the new features and prefer stable and secure over having the latest toy.

Stability is a key feature of Linux and the best approach is to stay with the tried and tested stuff. You reduce compatibility issues and save yourself a lot of headaches. Ask yourself "do i really need this update?".

In my opinion it's a waste of time. I update maybe once every six months or so.

BEAA = Bleeding Edge Addicts Anonymous. I recommend you attend a session or two, since you are addicted to the bleeding edge versions of Linux software.

(I've got two good friends who went through th BEAA program - it helped them kick the habit. )

Wow. I kinda considered Linux 2.6 to be stable.

Thanks for your comments (and the rehab center, Laz) looks like I should try a slower moving distro.

Which of thee shall join me on mine quest to install Debian Linux onto thine hard drive? Let us rise, and defeat the great evil powers of Redmond!

What?! How dare you diss Microsoft! They are one of the greatest software companies ever built. In fact, the Redmond based company Microsoft is THE greatest computer company in the world.

You can take my word for it.

Sorry. I'm trying openSUSE first. I've downloaded 1.4GB of the DVD so far after 4 days .

2.4 is still being developed. There isn't a single feature in 2.6 I need, so no point in upgrading imo.

Although I do keep a close eye on what comes out from Google and Mozzila I'd say there aren't too many 'revolutionary' things popping out on Windows nowadays (other than Vista).

I'd guess there's a development rush on Linux and other platforms which seems to have started catching up in terms of user base .

Actually your a bit backwards there. Mac OS-X is still ahead of windows, and windows is the one beginning to catch up.
Well actually thats not 100% accurate. I think Mac died off for a while, then came back with OS-X. Even so, windows has not 'caught up' with it yet. Apple is going to be releasing another system eventually, and that will leave microsoft even farther behind.

As for Linux, I still dont see anything like Beryl, or KDE on windows. Not even close.

Windows is about the least of customizable systems, and it actually tries to prevent you from doing some things. Its advantage then? People use it.

Or it using people......

I've run Kubuntu for 8 months or so, and it has treated me very well. Even when learning to really use it and in making mistakes it protects itself. Kubuntu is based off of Debian. Just my two cents.
btw CPU hope your download speeds up!

It wasn't my intention to hurt anyone, there I edited my post to reflect more accurately what I wanted to say.

I really don't think the "which is better between the two" discussion has any sense. It's like trying to say a plane is better than a train or vice versa. They serve different purposes. The reason most people have been using windows is because it offered what they wanted: best performance-for-the-buck, ability to use the latest software and games. Some people have other needs or don't care that much about performance, price or the latest games.
