I forgot this software doesn't like "s in the subject so here's the thread to which you can reply to: Ever since I got Satellite internet my current Linux distro's were always subject to the most stable of unstable updates (which aren't always as stable as they could be). Do any of you have this "addiction"? If you don't why? I constantly update because there are so many new features and improvements... do you think I should consider slower developing distros like Debian or openSUSE?

Well i still run the 2.4 kernel. I don't need most of the new features and prefer stable and secure over having the latest toy. Stability is a key feature of Linux and the best approach is to stay with the tried and tested stuff. You reduce compatibility issues and save yourself a lot of headaches. Ask yourself "do i really need this update?". ------------------ |

In my opinion it's a waste of time. I update maybe once every six months or so. BEAA = Bleeding Edge Addicts Anonymous. I recommend you attend a session or two, since you are addicted to the bleeding edge versions of Linux software. (I've got two good friends who went through th BEAA program - it helped them kick the habit. ) |

quote: Wow. I kinda considered Linux 2.6 to be stable. Thanks for your comments (and the rehab center, Laz) looks like I should try a slower moving distro. ------------------ |

Which of thee shall join me on mine quest to install Debian Linux onto thine hard drive? Let us rise, and defeat the great evil powers of Redmond! ------------------ [This message has been edited by Goop2 (edited February 13, 2007).] |

2.4 is still being developed. There isn't a single feature in 2.6 I need, so no point in upgrading imo. ------------------ |

Although I do keep a close eye on what comes out from Google and Mozzila I'd say there aren't too many 'revolutionary' things popping out on Windows nowadays (other than Vista). I'd guess there's a development rush on Linux and other platforms which seems to have started catching up in terms of user base . [This message has been edited by calin (edited February 15, 2007).] |

Not even close. Windows is about the least of customizable systems, and it actually tries to prevent you from doing some things. Its advantage then? People use it. ------------------ |

Or it using people...... I've run Kubuntu for 8 months or so, and it has treated me very well. Even when learning to really use it and in making mistakes it protects itself. Kubuntu is based off of Debian. Just my two cents. ------------------ |

quote: It wasn't my intention to hurt anyone, there I edited my post to reflect more accurately what I wanted to say. I really don't think the "which is better between the two" discussion has any sense. It's like trying to say a plane is better than a train or vice versa. They serve different purposes. The reason most people have been using windows is because it offered what they wanted: best performance-for-the-buck, ability to use the latest software and games. Some people have other needs or don't care that much about performance, price or the latest games. |
