Alright, I've got to make this. I've heard a lot of talk about Alpha Centauri, and here's where it goes. Questions: Here's my answers: 9. My favorite Epic Battle would have to be Morgan?/Yang, he had taken over the entire middle continent in planet, and I the left continent. He declared war on me, and I moved into his continent with a sea base, and later an Air Land base on his territory, took a huge amount of time getting 2/3 bases, but once I did, I'd gotten a good foot hold, and brought him down with Gaia on my left, now gaining 1700+ Energy per turn. 10. My strategy would be to if you're going to take down a powerful enemy, move a base or 2 near their territory. That way, if its taken, you don't give them a foot hold in yours, and they just get lost men for a base. I've only lost 1 game (First game, Lal/Miriam, Miriam was Unsurpassed, I was not) even though thats only at citizen, thats something to go by. 11. Probes, and Locusts of Chiron. Scenario editing at the beginning of the game with my SkyFort is awesome too. (Quantum Laser, Time-Stasis, Gravship, Blink) I beat an entire faction with that one unit. Edit: Wow, this must be my longest post. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Mene-Mene (edited February 06, 2007).] |

quote: 1. Favorite way of Beating the game? 1. It's a draw between crushing all opposition with String Disruptor drop troops and Shard Choppers, and Planet Busting Planet's crust to pieces. 2. Spartans and Santiago own all. I like Zhakarov too(that research bonus is great). 3. Sister Miram. It's so hard to make allies when you are a religion fanatic... *sigh* My reputation is always bad with her too because I can't resist attacking with that 25% bonus. 4. Yang - Dierdre - Miriam. All others are much easier. Dierdre is usually a pushover - Yang takes a while because he's got a ton of cities stuffed with worthless units - Miriam's a tough nut to crack. 5. Transcend. I will play on any of them, though; depending on my mood. 6. Santiago and Zhakarov. They give me units and research when pacted. All Yang and Miram give me is threats. Lal whines about my nerve-stapling and Dierdre yells at me for abusing the environment. 7. Huge Map of Planet. 8. First picked up the demo a looong time ago on a Linux CD... I loved that game so much. A few years after that I looked for it online - played the Windows demo for a while... then I found the full version of Alpha Centauri(and Alien Crossfire) on a certain site which will remain nameless. 9. I was playing Morgan, and on an island - built up a very good core of bases - then built dozens of Singularity Planet Busters and blew the map apart. 10. Find a good spot, scatter around a few bases - build build build like crazy so I'd be ready for the inevitable wars. Only lost one game, Mene? Whoa. |

I've only played like 10 games. I don't like losing, it hurts my record. You sound very, Treacherous, whats your ratings? Deirdre's mindworms/Locusts of Chiron/Isle of the Deep pack quite a punch. I've only played Miriam once, and Morgan moved into my territory, I attacked his 3rd base, he whined, I let off, he didn't let me have any of his (later discovered non-existant) techs, so I squashed him, easily. Yang got angry at me (he was on the other side of planet). Haven't finished our dispute yet. Santiago is a bit hard to play as. I haven't played as Yang, I always squash him, just takes time. Add 11, Favorite unit(s) I don't get your hint, I've got Alpha Centauri, but not Alien Crossfire. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Mene-Mene (edited February 06, 2007).] |

Well, Jez mentioned it so I guess I can. http://the-underdogs.net - Home of the Underdogs. It's a site with alot of older games for free. (Including SMAC) Alien Crossfire makes the game even better(it's an expansion with more factions and other cool things) |

The Underdogs lives!!! I thought they were done! I usually played as the Gaians and won without warfare. Now if it was Civ III, I'd *always* play the Celts and conquer everything. I haven't actually tried this, but I assume you guys have, but just in case [This message has been edited by insanepoet (edited February 06, 2007).] |

A PBEM would be awesome, Arch. We playing Alpha Centauri only or mixed factions? |
Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
I'd prefer Alpha Centauri only, I'm not used to Alien Crossfire. BTW, do you know what Alpha Centauri: Alien Crossfire is? AC:AC/ACAC ------------------ |
Lazarus Member Posts: 1668 From: USA Registered: 06-06-2006 |
SMAC is the generic name for the series - and Alpha Centauri, Alien Crossfire is known as SMAX. |

I know, but its still funny. ------------------ |
Lazarus Member Posts: 1668 From: USA Registered: 06-06-2006 |
Yeah, it is; kinda. It always reminds me of the word "smacks", which is a funny word, somehow. Anyway, Alien Crossfire is a great expansion. Especially the new "Planet" features. |
ArchAngel Member Posts: 3450 From: SV, CA, USA Registered: 01-29-2002 |
I play as the Cybernetic Consciousness, so SMAX would be better for me. mmm.... smax... I want those Smacks cereal now.
------------------ |
Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
I'm just soo familiar with the old factions, old game, old units, old concepts, and I'm not ready for the new Manifold factions. They seem to unbalance the game as superpowers, (Of course my gaian's grew fast enough to counter that, but they just seem to get soo good soo fast. I know they can't interact at first, or become planetary govenor, but still. If we do play, regardless if its SMAC, or SMAX, then I want the Gaians. I always pick them. Although I thought they were bad on their planet crazyness, (and she ISN'T naked) but Cha Dawn's worse! ------------------ [This message has been edited by Mene-Mene (edited February 08, 2007).] |
Lazarus Member Posts: 1668 From: USA Registered: 06-06-2006 |
Cha Dawn is a psycho, but I like playing his faction too. And the aliens - they are much better, but the designers wanted the human players to first team up against them and then fight eachother. |
Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
I agree, the aliens are better, but I still am more experienced with/better with the old game, seeing as I'm the underling here. (I've only been playing for a few months. ------------------ |
Lazarus Member Posts: 1668 From: USA Registered: 06-06-2006 |
Alien Crossfire does change the gameplay, but I think it gives a much richer experience. Perhaps we could play a PBEM of Alpha Centauri first while Mene Mene gets used to SMAX. (Arch, since you can't play Aki how bout you take Yang? You fit his description to a T anyway. ) |
Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
Zakhov is more like the attributes of Aki. I got Deirdre! Who are you Laz? Santiago? They should make a Greek civil war one. (Spartans, Athens...) It'd be an awesome history lesson. ------------------ |
Lazarus Member Posts: 1668 From: USA Registered: 06-06-2006 |
Hmm - should I go with Lal and try to keep Arch and Mene away from eachother's throats - or be Morgan and make tons of dough while Arch and Mene battle furiously - or be Santiago and pwn Arch and Mene. Santiago FTW! I know what faction I'm playing. Zhakarov... |
Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
I knew it looked wrong. I think Lal is a brilliant Idea for you. :looks at arch and makes pact against Laz: OWNS Laz. what does pwn mean? ------------------ |
ArchAngel Member Posts: 3450 From: SV, CA, USA Registered: 01-29-2002 |
PWN = Power oWN. if I couldn't play the Cyborgs, I'd do the University. but, we'll just set the factions manually. I don't like the progenitors, either ------------------ |
Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
I'd really rather just play the original, I might be able to compromise though, i haven't picked a favorite yet. (Must play all of them to know.) ------------------ |
ArchAngel Member Posts: 3450 From: SV, CA, USA Registered: 01-29-2002 |
toughen up. I'll be the only SMAX. we'll all be allies. (unless we want a face off) I've only played 4 of all the factions. just find out how you play and choose a race that best suits it. no need to play them all. ------------------ |
Lazarus Member Posts: 1668 From: USA Registered: 06-06-2006 |
I just had a brilliant idea - get Warsong to join the game - and he could play Sister Miriam's Believers - a perfect fit! j/k Hey Arch, if we play that way I'd pick Svensgaard(SMAX sea faction) instead of a SMAC faction. |
Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
No! I'd have to be either Roze, or the Caretakers! ------------------ |
Lazarus Member Posts: 1668 From: USA Registered: 06-06-2006 |
Take Roze then! She's a good faction. I must warn you though - her +2 probe can actually decrease her probe rating if it gets too high(when combined with a Coverts Ops Center or some Secret Project that increases your probe rating. It's a bug they never fixed. So we'd all be allies, Arch? Fine, fine! I'll agree to that. ...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! NEVER! |

Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
Why no bell curve? It stops Random Events that I never liked. I was thinking teaming up with who you want, like in Single Player, (Teaming with who you like, fighting who you don't) Like say, me, Santiago, Believers, and you Arch vs. Rest of AI, and Laz. Oh, and Citizen Level. (Why mess with the AI, when you could be messing with your friends? ) Just my input. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Mene-Mene (edited February 09, 2007).] |
Lazarus Member Posts: 1668 From: USA Registered: 06-06-2006 |
Arch, Citizen level is probably best, since Mene hasn't played as much(but he will, in time. He will.) Mene, why no Unity Scattering? Why no Unity Survey? And if we put Spoils of War on - it nullifies the Cybernet Consciousness' power to do that already(I mean we'll all be able to do it), so yeah. Why not have the Transcend victory on too? |
Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
Okay, no Spoils of War. Definetly No Unity Survey (Thats half the fun! Exploring!) I'm not sure about Scattering, (Never made much sense) The Transcend never made much sense to me, I didn't see much point in just researching to win. Does anyone have YM? Yahoo Messenger? ------------------ [This message has been edited by Mene-Mene (edited February 09, 2007).] |
Lazarus Member Posts: 1668 From: USA Registered: 06-06-2006 |
With Unity Scattering on, there'll be pods scattered everywhere. Running over them with a vehicle can yield good things(energy, resources, vehicles) or bad things(fungus blooms, native lifeforms, earthquakes, and teleportation). And hey - with Unity Survey on, the map is still hidden - it's just the topography that you can see. You still have to explore! (I have icq) |
Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
I knew about Union Scattering, I just thought it didn't make sense that it would be all over planet. I'll turn on Union Survey. Arch: Why no Bellcurve? ------------------ [This message has been edited by Mene-Mene (edited February 09, 2007).] |

He doesn't mind seeing his solar collectors wiped out by a hailstorm and then two years later a meteor strike destroying his best base. |

Actually, I find it terribly amusing to take on an enemy with hundreds of terrain enhancements, and just shower him with fungal missiles! The sight of all those solar collectors and farms and mines and roads being erased by red fungus crawling with worms and spore launchers is a wonderful sight(and Planet grows stronger - yes!) |

Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
I'm not sure about that one, I don't want one of us to immediately be eliminated by Aliens, or by AI, but I definetly don't want AI to be restarted. ------------------ |

Why? ------------------ |
Lazarus Member Posts: 1668 From: USA Registered: 06-06-2006 |
Personal reasons. Do we really need an IM program to play this game? |
ArchAngel Member Posts: 3450 From: SV, CA, USA Registered: 01-29-2002 |
no IM program needed. my YM account is the same as my e-mail address. reason for no bell curve is that the random events keep you on your toes. some good, some bad. I always liked that they added to the game. random environment means more flexible thinking. I personally go no unity survey, yes unity scattering. no spoils of war (because I'm cyborg, but if you want it, that's fine) and Do or die. I don't like killing off the same player multiple times.
Mene, you can take on more. you played 10 games, and won 9 of them. ------------------ |
Lazarus Member Posts: 1668 From: USA Registered: 06-06-2006 |
You know, the thing I disliked about the harder difficulty levels was that - instead of making the AI more challenging, they just made it HARDER for you! At least, that's what it seems like - maybe I'm wrong. Those rules sound fine to me, Arch. I think we can take on Transcend level just fine. |
Mene-Mene Member Posts: 1398 From: Fort Wayne, IN, USA Registered: 10-23-2006 |
No, we don't need an IM to play, its just an easy way for me to contact. Ok, I'll add Bellcurve Hmm... IF we're willing to team up together, (until the end, one must die, or two) I'm trying to keep it in the middle. I don't want unity scattering but I'm pretty much letting Arch have his way otherwise. Edit: Oh, FINE, I'll add Unity Scattering. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Mene-Mene (edited February 10, 2007).] |

haha, yeah, you are. kinda feel guilty for dominating the game rules. oh wait, there it went. just a little gas, that's all. oh, under Conquest, we can win if we're all allied together(max 3), we can win. alright, I'll create because.. uh.. my name begins first in the alphabet. so, here's the way it works. when it's your turn, the person before you will e-mail the file to you (you actually have to grab it out of the save folder of the game. on your first turn, set your password. alright, here are the settings: Huge Map of Planet. Talent. Rules:

Arch:Thank you for taking action Arch. I'd kinda like to start because 1. I've got the last alphabetically, and 2. I'm the least experience. But if you want you can go first. Thanks for bumping it down to talent btw. I'd like to revamp my info, (I use the default in my regular games) because being called "Lady Deirdre the beautiful" isn't great for my reputation. I'd suggest that we go by our Screen Names like, "Lord Mene-Mene the intelligent", or "Prime Function Arch-Angel the Activist", or "Captain Lazarus the conqueror". If all is acceptable that is. Laz: I'd like to start a game ourselves on the original, Level Specialist with the aforementioned rules by Arch. If you don't want to thats fine. ------------------ |

I will never go to any "SMACAA" meetings because none exist, and no addict to the game has ever broken his addiction, nor wanted to.
