ok. i've got xubuntu(i like xfce) dual booted with xp on my wife's computer. i was wondering if there is a free/open-source dvd ripping/burning software that i can get? preferably something that is fairly easy to install, i don't want to have to hunt up 7 different programs to get one to work. i have no internet connection on here computer, incase you suggestion needs that for some reason. i would like to be able to back up all the movies we have/will be getting.

thanks for the link, it will come in handy. one question though, do you have to have an internet connection to use the apt-get, does it pull from a server i mean?

No. You don't have to connect to a server to use apt-get. However, you will have to create your own cd that is compatible with apt. (Then you can use apt-cdrom something-or-other to add it to your repository list).

Unfortunately I don't know of any links. But the online ubuntu docs or forums have info on how to create an apt cd.

i'll prob'ly just bring my computer to my parents house and update everything, and work on getting everything installed from here. one more question, is there anyway to allow myself to login as root from the gui login? some things i've been trying to do(can't remember what exactly) sudo won't allow me to do.

You have to edit some config file to allow root GUI logins. I can't remember which one.

If you can't perform a task in sudo type
sudo su
. Sudo su will log you in as root on the console.

i think "sudo su" has cured all my current ills . i've got dvd::rip installed, and it's installing acidrip right now. i just had to go to synaptic package manager and set it to include the restricted stuff. i might need some help with the ripping/burning process of dvds and cds. right now i'm just getting it all installed. thanks for all the help.

i just had to add this:
apt-get rocks!
...ok, i'm done.

AFIAK dvd::rip won't rip to iso. k9copy will though.

In XFCE go into System|Login screen setup and click the Security tab. And there should be an option Allow Local Admin or something. Make sure that is ticked.

will k9copy rip dvds and cds to iso? i have a lot of game cds that need backed up. i have kde, gnome, blackbox, and fluxbox installed as well...for 2 reasons...1, i wanted to try them out, 2 because i was on a "apt-get install xxx" frenzy the other night . i was impressed and very pleased with apt-get, because the last time i had to install something it was openoffice.org, and burned it to cd under windows, then had to uncompress it, and convert .rpm packages to .deb, or vica versa, then install it. just typing "apt-get install openoffice.org" was a lot easier. i'm gonna get k9copy now i guess.
