i decided to go with phlack linux but i one major problem, i don't think it had drivers for my onboard ethernet, so i need some help finding/installing drivers for it. it's the sis 900 something or other chipset i believe. i'll be able to get more info later. but any help on installing drivers and a good place to look for various linux drivers would be very helpful. on a sidenote i decided to go with phlack because i want to be forced to install everything myself, it's the only way to learn linux the way i want to. later. ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

Wise choice about doing it yourself. It maybe harder but you'll know a load more for it. Check out ndiswrapper http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/ . I used it to get my wireless network card working a few years back. It supports more then wireless cards. Just point it in the direction of your windows driver and it will do the rest. ------------------ |

thanks for the link. i took a nic from one of my parted out computers and it worked with the live cd, so i'm installing now. i guess i'll do some googling for stuff on installing software, and installing stuff like kde, and gnome. ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

sorry to double-post but this is stupid...the nic works fine with the live cd, but when i intall it to the hard drive, and then boot no connection or recognition of anything. i have no idea of how to fix any of this yet. i really want to use phlack, but at this rate i'm going to have to use fedora(even i know it's bloated) or debian. eventually i'm using slack or phlack though. ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

The live cd will auto-config your network, once you install it it's up to you. It looks like it is a network oriented distro so you got plenty of tools. If you need help setting it up manually let me know. ------------------ |

i have phlak running on my little gateway comp now(400mhz celeron), and i got the network setup after installing to the hard drive. now, does anyone know where to find some basic linux tutorials. something that explain the file system. where files install to, how to set them in your menu, and basic terminal commands. thanks again for all the help, ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |
