My dad has finally come around about Linux. for those of you who don't know, he was very resistant about it, he thought nothing would run on it because it's all made for windows, and so he wouldn't really let me install it. but now he thinks it's great and he installed it on his laptop a few weeks ago. Now he's dual-booting it with Windows on all our PCs. This one is next after the other one, which is installing right now. he has Ubuntu on his laptop, with the kubuntu-desktop package installed, and we're installing Kubuntu on the other ones. ------------------ |

both of you are right. thanks for not letting me answer.. j/k. actually now I have to do Ubuntu cuz stupid Kubuntu isn't working with our wireless internet. then I'll just install KDE and it will all be prettier and non-sucky. ------------------ |

Congratulations! I like Ubuntu really well. I hope your dad does, too. Re: KDE vs. Gnome? I dunno. All I can say is that the Mac OS X GUI beats them both. (Btw, did HanClinto tell you guys that I got a MacBook Pro for Christmas/birthday/all the other holidays this year?) ------------------ |

I used to envy Mac hardware but now that they dont have that anymore, i pity them. Half baked Unix OS. It makes a good looking door stop though ------------------ |

The MacBook has a lot of nice touches that make it just...cool. Let me name just a few: The light-up keyboard, for example, which comes on automatically when the light sensor senses that it's dark. The power cord is magnetic, and not long like your usual computer AC adapter. Therefore, it is impossible to trip on it and crack the connector inside (I've had a computer die that way, and Ereon had a thread going on about his issues, too). Therefore, if you do happen to accidentally trip on it, or whatever, it just breaks away without harming anything (assuming your battery works). Many Linux programs have been packaged to run via DarwinPorts or Fink. There are problems with getting many of them to work, still, and it's not as good as Debian or Ubuntu for installing needed dependencies. But still, I'm glad that it's there in some form, or else I couldn't go on using gnuCash for my personal finances. iCal is an awesome calendaring program. The remote is pretty cool, too. I can control iTunes from the kitchen while I'm cooking (my laptop, when at home, stays in the living room hooked up to the stereo). There is a lot of free & open-source stuff for the Mac. It's always disappointing when you were hoping to install a program that doesn't support it, but still, there's a lot out there. With the computer off, I can push a button located on the battery, and find out how much charge is left (a row of lights lights up). Obviously, it's not perfect, and a lot of the above-mentioned features could perhaps be considered frivolous, unnecessary, etc., but it does show that they put a lot of thought into making things "nice" for the user. You have probably seen the video on YouTube with the Vista promo audio laid over video of a Mac. There you go. ------------------ |

MacBooks seem to be quite expensive or is there some cheaper models available than the ones that costs much as PC laptops? Could really use laptop for reading. ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

quote: When asked about the price of Macs vs. PCs, Clint puts it this way: for a low-end, bare-bones model, PCs are far cheaper than Macs. However, when it comes to a much higher-end computer, the price of a high-end Mac is not terribly different from a similarly high-end PC. It's when you're looking for a high-end model that a Mac becomes a better option, financially. ------------------ |

Books for Mac, cheap, no. There is the "Cheap" Mac mini, which to me, still looks like it has some punch. For more information look at the commercials. I'll wait until I have enough for the Mac Pro, or the MacBook Pro Before I get a Mac. (Maybe MacBook) But anyway, my PC still technically has a lot of punch, though more data needs tranfering, and it lacks Linux. Yeah, I've got a 2.6 ghz Hyperthreaded Pentium 4 in it. Its nice. ------------------ |
