Well 2006 is a big year for gaming consoles.
I've been trying to decide on which console to get, and I will probably buy both eventually however I'm waiting for Crysis to come out a (so I can see which console plays it best) and I'm trying to buy a MacBook pro (to replace my aging desktop).

I'm not going to even consider the xbox360 unless they develop a motion detection controller.

Trivia:
Yellow Dog Linux has special support for the PS3
The PS3 has an OS selection menu
Sony will release a Blu-ray dvd controller in December

The Wii controller has a rumble function
The Wii is more powerfull as the original xbox but less than the PS3 or the Xbox 360
(All trivia taken from http://media.wii.ign.com and http://ps3.ign.com)

So if you had/have the money which console would/will you buy?

What do you want out of it?

If you want to get a console based on the games, pick the one that has the most games you want. If want to be blown away by killer graphics or have linux on it and don't mind paying ALOT, get the PS3.

I am getting the Wii, why?

The price, it's the cheapest of the 3.

The games, it has the most games I want on it than any other console, and it will be able to play older games (Nintendo, Sega, and Turbografix 16 games) through the Nintendo Online service.

The innovation, new kind of controller.

The compatibiltiy, I have a gamecube and the Wii will be able to play Gamecube games, so I can sell my GC but keep games.

If I had the money and the interest in a console, I would totally be getting the Wii. I'm really impressed with the ingenuity that Nintendo has put into this console, and I hope they hit a Wii-mote home run with this one. I feel that Nintendo is getting closer to what God had in mind when he wired us for games, and helping us to use our brains in new and creative ways, as well as encouraging games to be multiplayer so that we can use them as social events and not just solo entertainment.

the Wii. I am planning on selling my gamecube, using my birthday money, and saving up (and perhaps asking my parents to help at christmas time) and then buy the awesome Wii. the name may suck but it rocks. for one the cost isn't outrageous, and it has the awesome motion controller. plus I like everything nintendo =D

I got both (had to trade in a LOT of games to pull it off tho) and I am more impressed with PS3---their ideas were more thought out as far as the launch scene is concerned---their motion sensing (the Sixaxis controller can detect motion, but not where you are pointing) was implemented into games such as Resistance more naturally (you shake it like you are struggling when someone grabs you) where as some Wii games (such as Red Steel) it seems forced and cheaply implemented. Plus the PS3 just feels more open and free to it--for instance you can use almost any bluetooth headset you want on it (or bt mice and keyboards for that matter)---but here is my opinion on the plusses:

PS3
-better grapics
-has Resistance--which is AMAZING I am actually blown away by how much I like it
-more media friendly--you can even hook up your ipod or other MP3 player to it
-Downloadable games, including PSone games you can play on the PSP
-has 2 good shooters right out the gate
-supports PSone and PS2 games--you can create virtual memory cards on the hard drive so you don't need your old cards anymore (you can buy an adapter to copy card info to the PS3's drive)
-The hard drive is upgradable with any 2.5 hard drive--one Japanese company that tested this suggested you stick with a 5,400 RPM one because, according to them, any higher RPMs does not render faster results and is a waste of money, but they put in a 100 gig and it worked perfectly.
-The controllers don't need double a's---you just plug it into the system using a USB cable (included) and it charges automatically.

Wii
-Cool controller (although, in shooters can cause cramps, but that is like how Dance Dance Revolution makes your legs hurt--if you like the game enough you will get over it)
-Has Zelda (I am not a big Zelda fan, but if you are you will LOVE Twilite Princess--my bro is addicted to it and I have to fight him for Wii time)
-Call of Duty on the Wii has GREAT implementation of Motion Sensing--you do things such as aim and shoot, row a boat and steer a jeep---the only downside tho is NO multiplayer in any shape or form.
-Comes with Wii sports--really fun party game
-you can make a 3D model of yourself called a Mii--Miis can be played in Wii Sports.
-has a mini-photoshop like program
-Virtual Console
-controller needs double As---not totally bad but I am hoping someone engineers a rechargeable unit soon
-hint: do NOT buy Red Steel--it is crap unfortunately (was heartbroken over that--I waited so long for it!)---and just rent Excite Truck--it is a good game but VERY short---and only buy Call of Duty if you don't mind crappy graphics and no multiplayer--at least rent it tho to see some great motion sensing ideas that were very well implemented.

edit: BTW does anyone know: on the PS3's cross media bar there is an option to install alternate OS on a partition in the drive---is that only for that Linux thing or would Windows work? If so, the PS3 would be a wicked PC although it would almost necessistate buying a bigger drive--I am sure it is more than powerful enough to run Vista but I don't know if it is compatible.

BTW my final word on the 2 would be this: they are both great and I suggest both---PS3 is just unreal awesome and has great games, the Wii will probably have to wait a while until a game I like comes along (SMASH BROS BABY!) but the GameCube compatibility, Virtual Console and such can hold me off--so, for me, the PS3 is immediately gratifying (and will continue to be--especially with Heavenly Sword mwahaha) and the Wii is an investment in wicked games I know are coming---so I think they are both complimentary systems that both take new ideas different directions--I just wish the Wii was a little more media friendly and 'open' feeling (for instance, to add someone as a friend you have to know them in real life or on the internet already and you both have to exchange 12-digit numbers)---LOL sorry for writing a book but I love both and didn't want to sell either short!

Thanks a lot for the info! You've answered a lot of my questions about both consoles (and a few games).

No prob dude :-) BTW you can surf the net on the PS3 right out of the box, but the Wii will be able to soon--and a new website (WiiCade.com ) is collecting Wii-compatible free flash games so that you can go play net based flash games with the Wiimote (since it acts like a mouse)---just found that out 5 minutes ago---technically you could play those games with a PC or PS3 or any other flash-enabled surfing device--but it is cool to see people thinking outside the box for consoles so I am saving that addy for when the Opera-Wii browser hits (it is supposed to be free for the first few months available--like a bonus to early Wii adopters)

Where? On ebay the PS3 is ca $2000. At WalMart (if they have any left) they're $400 for the 20GB version and $600 for the 60GB version.

There's no possible way to install windows on a PS3 because it's processor is PPC based. Microsoft hasn't released a PowerPC version of windows (and it doesn't seem like they'll do it for Vista either).

That means that:
1) You're stuck with PPC Linux or *BSD
2) You're low enough to get a cracked version of Mac OSX to work on it
3) Apple Releases a version of OS X for the PlayStation 3 hardware... highly unlikely, but I would probably try it if they did

Just beat Call of Duty on Wii---not bad--certainly doesn't begin to compete with Resistance on PS3--but if you or any of your friends have a Wii rent it because there is some awesome motion sensing ideas (some bad ones too, but mostly good)---I was impressed overall--now I am back in Resistance that game is uber creepy---just imagine a darker TimeSplitters mixed with Call of Duty and you probably will have the right idea

The Wii Is God's favorite console

well, I dunno if God HAS a favorite console, being that he has way better things to do then sit around and play "pretend" when he watches out over the whole universe, but the Wii is definently my choice.

Screw PlayStation (Sorry for language) $600? Yeah right. Just for vamping the graphics and having Blu-Ray?

Never.

BTW: I don't have the Wii yet, all sold out... waiting for antoher shipment ot come in... gonna order online...

LOL--I only had enough for the PS3, Resistance and the Wii---all the Wii games I have played I rented from GameStop--I am a part time employee there so I have check out privelages----with that 600 bucks tho you get the most bang for your buck--the PS3 does more feature wise than 360 or Wii--but I consider Wii a good secondary console---I could technically do without my Wii but not my PS3---although I am happy to have both and would strongly suggest to anyone I know to get and try both!

Hey everyone! Since I made that last comment involving TimeSplitters I felt sad because I miss the TS seires (I got royally hooked to it) so I looked up Free Radical Design (makers of TS) and was pleasantly shocked: they are making a new PS3 and 360 shooter called HAZE that is coming out EARLY next year (either march or earlier if I remember the GameStop page correctly--altho I might be wrong)----that is bound to rock!! Plus they said they have no idea when, but they WILL make a new TimeSplitters in the future---I am so happy!! If any of you have an Xbox, GameCube or PS2 please run out right now and pick up either TS2 or FuturePerfect if you love FPSs---those are some of the best First Person Shooters I have ever played (they are in the line of GoldenEye and involve a lot of the same people who used to work at Rare and developed GoldenEye). I am psyched cause I am kind of a Free Radical fan--the only game of theirs I haven't played was Second Sight because it didn't appear to have multiplayer or map building (2 cornerstones of TimeSplitters). Man, now I need to bug my boss at GameStop for hours because I have new toys to save up for (PS3 and Wii left me broke--thus the reason why the only Wii game I own is WiiSports) LOL sorry for writing a book---just really psyched FR is back to releasing FPSs and now I have another several month wait before something I want comes out LOL!

if i had to pick between the wii or the ps3 it would be easy to choose, the wii. 1st, it's cheaper. second, i already have a gamecube, and the wii plays gamecube games as well, so that's always good. the ps3's capability of running linux makes it tempting, but i already have 3 running computers, and i have the parts for one i just haven't put it together yet, so i don't need another one. if i were you cpufreak, i would look at which games were coming out for the 2 different systems and go with the one that had the most games you would like. after all, that's the whole purpose of a GAME system, to play games.

pretty much puts it in perspective on that one I wish I still had gamecube games---I had them a long time ago but I traded them in for other stuff---now I am desperately trying to find Eternal Darkness Sanitys Requiem---I loved that game and now it is hard to find---I did find the Resident Evil remake for 10 bucks tho---and I think our store still has WaveRace for 6 bucks so tat isn't bad---still tho most games I own are sony---still waiting for that memry card adapter to show up so I can transfer my FF12 save to my PS3 and continue playing it---had to abstain from 12 for quite a while now

Wii.

Simply so I can play Chrono Trigger again.
And Secret of Mana
And Final Fantasy III
And Secret of Evermore
And Zombies ate my neighbors
And Mac and Joe
And Super Mario World
And about 50 million other games that I played when I had my SNES.

Come on, 100% backward compatability.... how AWESOME IS THAT?

OK, I've played a PS3, and it is AMAZING! The graphics are near flawless and the gameplay is very cool. However, no rumble, that sucks hard. Cost? OUCH. Blu-Ray? PSH, Blu-Ray aint gonna be the standard IMO.

So, 250$ as opposed to 600$?

Plus, look at reliability. Nintendo has had very minimal problems with systems, and their products are very VERY durable. Playstations have broken a lot, had recalls, can't hardly take a hit, and are generally poor quality system.

I'm getting the Wii.... WOOT!

looks like my budget for next year will BARELY be able to accommodate a Wii... let alone a PS3. I suppose many people down here will be happy to get a Wii if I'm not happy with it .

just saw the info for PS3 linux http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/delivery.shtml I will probably give that a try sometime pretty sweet that you can do that! With PS products--yah I had a defective PSone and PStwo---but I think they have cleaned up since they started offering a 1 year warranty instead of 30-90 days---my first 1 year warranty product was my PSP and I got it day one without problems---although it is true Nintendo puts their consoles through hell before shipping them--the drop-test them from 5 feet and there was even a story from the first Iraq war of an old school brick style gameboy surviving a bunker being bombed--so they are pretty tough!
