I was just wondering what OSes do y'all use on here. I've been using Windows for years and I'm trying to get a Linux machine up and running, but I can't find a distro that works too good without a internet connection. Also if y'all got ideas on that problem I'ld appreciate them. |

You probably won't be able to play encrypted DVDs or Apple media formats unless you download a codec online but if you want an distro that works like an out of the box XP SP2 install (most likely without the Windows Media codecs), Debian, SUSE/OpenSUSE and Fedora Core work fairly good without an internet conection (SUSE/OpenSUSE has about 10 CD so that would probably be your best bet right there). ------------------

My laptop runs XP. My desktop runs Ubuntu because I'm a human :P Ubuntu will send you the disks in the mail, totally free. It went on painlessly. All my (basic) hardware works. i.e. video, sound, kb, mouse. Its got a really great package manager, i think its based on debian (apt-get). I mainly use BSD nowadays but most of my boxes run Slackware. I wouldn't say i'm a Linux hacker, i have only submitted around 4 patches to the kernel in the 12 years I have been using it. You can hack the kernel all you please, Linus doesn't care, he won't add any of it. You can run any Linux distro without a internet connection. If its lots of applications you want, just accept all packages during installation. ------------------ |

Thanks for all the help. I've got a the Hoary Hedgehog release of Ubuntu and considering I don't have a home connection I can't download any other packages than what comes on the cd, and that just didn't really work to well. I've got the Dapper Dan release coming, should be here in about a week I believe. I'll check in to suse, sounds promising. Thanks again. |
