Wow RM -- I'm really impressed with that animation! I think you've got real talent as an animator -- you have a very good handle on how to make simple drawings look alive, natural and entertaining. I'd be curious to see how you might pick up 3d animation -- not drawing models, just taking already existing models and animating them.

Thanks for sharing your Flash work! I look forward to seeing more stuff that you make as it comes along. Please keep us posted!

@ Lava: Which ones the first one? THe first one i posted?

I dunno, a day or two maybe, I was still getting very much used to flash.

The last one took me and hour and a half becaue I was using 24 frames per second...

@ Arch: Beyond stick animations!?!?! ARE YOU CRAZY!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Beyond stick figures i have absolutly no artistic talent.

At all.

Period.

Zip-a-dee-doo-da.

Zilch.

Nutin'

Zero talent, im telling you! I couldn't make anything thats "good" that isn't a stick figure. Sure i've tried, but to no avail...

*shrug*

Nice, RM! The third one (comnees) is certainly a lot "cleaner", which is nice from a technical standpoint. The first two were very interesting to me in that you didn't seem at all constrained by your tools. Both sets of animations are very impressive in different ways. Great job! I've been working with Flash off and on for a while now, and in under a month you've certainly surpassed my skills. Very cool!

If this is how you feel, I really am interested in seeing what you could do with 3d model animation. For instance, picking up one of the rigged (but not yet animated) models from Eternal War and seeing what you can do to make a guy flip and jump around with attack sequences -- that could be very intersting.

Cheers!

To Realm: I agree with Arch, I think you are quite capable of moving ahead, just push yourself, take what you've learned with stick figures, apply it, learning something new, and then keep going. This is good stuff, keep up the good work.

Yeah man, maybe you're thing isn't necessarily art, but animation. I have seen job listings for "animators". You should look into what han said to get some practice.

Plus the next logical step for you, at least mathematically, moving from 2 dimensional stick figures would be 3 dimensional stickfigures, which is essentialy all a 3D character is once they're rigged with a skeleton.

Well you have potential I'll admit but coming from someone who frequents newgrounds.com I'll give you a couple pointers.

1) Stick animations don't gather much credit out there in the world wide web.
They're very generic and simple. Try stretching your skills into thickened figures.

2) Learn how to do a pre-loader. They help when you get larger files which include sound in them.

3) I'm guessing that your 3rd animation looked smoother because you bumped up the FPS on the file. It does make it "prettier" but when you get into large animations a few FPS change can significantly impact the final file size. No matter how good you animated something, people usually don't like to wait through a long load just because of your FPS rate.

Now I'm only saying this as helpful critism, you are far better than me at flash, and I actually enjoyed this stick animations in comparison to all the ones I see everyday. Keep practicing and you'll rival the creator of the Bitey of Brackenwood. Wait, no, he's basically a flash god, no one will match him any time soon. http://www.biteycastle.com/

I'm gonna have to agree with CapnStank here, and stick anims are so completely overdone. I've only seen a couple that has transcended beyond the normal anims.
i think the guys here are giving pretty good advice. look into animation as your field.
but, try to go beyond stick figures. start sketching around. push your limits.

I dunno' if stick figures are "so overdone" -- I consider them more "classic" or "standard". It's how everyone starts, and even how professionals storyboard animations. It has its value, so I wouldn't want to under-sell it.

If you can't show emotion and life in a simple stick-figure, then there's no way you can show it in a more complex drawing. Good art won't make up for poor animation.

But I agree, the next step is to combine the good animation with better art.

Even if you do continue in stick figures a while longer, RM -- still -- please keep us updated!

Sure they could. In fact, I just about bet you could if you started now and worked your way up. You've shown that you have some natural talent, now take that talent, run with it, push yourself a little farther, and get better. A man who throws up his hands and insist that "I can never do that" probably never will, whereas history is filled with great people who were constantly told "You can never do that" and yet did it in spite of that. ANYTHING is possible as long as you do your best for God's glory and trust Him to fill in the gaps as they need to be filled.

Well one thing that Phillips (previous link) has done that many flash animators ignore is the fact that flash can still be an art. They study the ins and outs of flash and become tremendous animators but never learn the key elements of visual art to start off with. Elements of foreground/background shading and lighting properties, as well as how to subtley use colour and contrast to bring out something small and make it a big part of the picture.

I never said that sticks shouldn't be attempted, they're a good basis for animators but its when they become massively published works that I choose to ignore them and lose faith in their credability. Go back to his site and watch some of his earlier animations. They may not seem incredibly great, but hey, that's where he started too.
