I have read on linux for a while and would like to try it. I do not know thwe first thing about it. I got scared when I read about configuring the kernels, but I think I'm up to the challenge. Which linux would you recommend and where do I download, how big are the file(s) I need to download, and do I need to burn them to a CD???

I recommend Kubuntu linux for you. I believe it runs about 630 MB, and you will need to burn the iso file to a disc. You won't need to worry about configuring a kernel. A few things extra:: a) If you plan on going pure linux, and you use a wireless card, change your mind now. They can be a pain to get working. Its really not worth it, imo. c)This is none of my business, but if you don't mind- why do you want to switch to linux? ------------------ |

IMHO, you should go the Virtual Machine route right now if you want to try it. That's what I'm doing! (Let's just say I've messed linux up three times, the latest with Adept going berserk and deleting pretty much every package on my system! Yeah, yeah, PEBKAC, you say. ) Kubuntu 5.10 Download Also, you can follow my Ubuntu installation guide here, making simple changes for Kubuntu when necessary. Please note that Virtual Machines aren't really that fast, but VMware player is fast enough for trying it out. You might want to change how much RAM the VM gets to get a significant speed increase.

Thanks. Why do I want to try it? I'm not an Anti-Windows person, I just read an article on it and wanted to try it out... Can you get some screen shots of it and explain how to do various functions with it? Thanks again. If you just want to do things "on the surface", you'll find KDE (the common linux desktop GUI, along with GNOME.), alot like windows. ------------------ |

i wrote one... lol... it was on how to install Kubuntu... i might post it on this site... hey D-SIPL, you and I could write tutorials... like since mine is only about how to do regular install, you could do Live CD, or some other distro of your choice. if you want to, PM me and we could talk about it... ------------------ |

Live-CD is the same, only you have to reinstall it every use. ------------------ |

quote: Live CD's are read only. They just copy parts of the OS that you are currently using to your RAM. That explains why it takes 5 minutes for OpenOffice.org to load. ------------------ |
