ok.. I want to buy Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, and I meet the minimum system requirements- except for one. It requires a 2ghz+ pentium processor or equivalent. Would a 1.66ghz AMD athlon xp processor be enough to scrape by? If not, is it even possible to just upgrade one's processor without getting an all new mobo and such? Basically, in the near future I will be needing a new gfx card and cpu anyway. Will I have to do anything extra to upgrade my processor, or is it plug-n-play? ------------------ |

quote: FarCry requires a 2 GHZ processor.. I did ok with a 1.58 Ghz one. Quite possible! Consider overclocking or checking out pricewatch.com for Socket A Sempron or Athlon XP processors (they're both the same). You will need some Thermal Paste Heatsink Compound aka CPU Grease. You can find those on pricewatch.com or newegg.com or tigerdirect.com. WARNING: Make sure you are static electricity free when installing the CPU. ------------------ |

thanks for the info man. Overclocking just through BIOS will be fine, no? ------------------ |

EDIT: Oh and if your computer freezes and wont boot after overclocking you'll have to reset the CMOS.... ocformums.com or your motherboard manual can help more than I can for that. ------------------ [This message has been edited by CPUFreak91 (edited April 26, 2006).] |

If I overclock my CPU to 2.0 ghz, do I need to worry about cooling at all? ------------------ |

Oh dear, Crazy is overclocking now, we're all in trouble Tried it with my laptop but I turned it all off when I started smelling something not quite right at the fan ports on my laptop . Since then I've stayed away from it. Does your processor have a fan or heatsink on it Crazy? I'm not sure about the ramifications of overclocking with a desktop, but if it already has a heatsink it would seem ok, but then again please don't take my advice, I'm just thinking out loud . ------------------ "I am very good at hiding, so if you don't see me, that's where I am." Yeah, it has a heatsink over it. ------------------ |

quote: Yes you do. Test and see how hot your computer gets after an hour of normal work (then do a quick hard reboot), enter the bios and see how hot it is. I learned over @ ocforums.com that 75C max for my CPU would be good so my bios is set to do an emergency shutdown if it gets too hot.
quote: My fans smell weird too. I think the bios up's their RPM and the motor's on the fans get kinda hot. None of them have stoped working after 2 months so I'm not worried. However laptops have very little air flow.. I don't think I would overclock any laptop. ------------------ |

IDK your computer, but for my Dell Inspiron 5100 there is a program called strangely enough 'I8KFanGUI' and it works swell, tells me my comp temp any time ------------------ |

hey crazyishone...your 1.66ghz athlon xp is(i'm pretty sure) called a 2000+, which means it's the equivelant of a 2.0ghz p4, according to amd's ratings anyway, so overclocking shouldn't be necessary. edit - i looked up some info on google, he should be fine. ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs [This message has been edited by bennythebear (edited April 29, 2006).] |

yes, i read about that in a book I have. (reviewed a little last night). The clock speed is still only 1.67, but apparently the way Athlons are built (pipeline structure?) makes it do floating point calculations very quickly, and are very good for games. Nonetheless, I overclocked my CPU to 1.9 ghz, but I didn't think it seemed necessary. I'd like my cpu to live until next time I can upgrade. I was browsing for parts last night, and I have a planned $1500 upgrade. No where to find that cash... ------------------ |

hey Crazyish i happen to have that exact same processor! keep it! You probably wouldn't believe me but my system survived the lightning from the tree twenty feet away when the power distributor on my system was hit about 4 months ago. All the lightening did was take out about 200MHz a hard drive and nothing else. Either God smiled on me or told AMD to make it real well or whatever but the sad thing is i did not even have a surge protector! Have fun with Oblivion, I admit I would love to go get that game!
