quote: You had my problem. Go to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats it really helps for almost every media format you could want. But I really suggest you download Automatix (www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=138405) which will do most of that and more for you (mp3, aac/mp4/m4a, DVD, Encrypted DVD, RealPlayer AVI, WMV, WMA, etc) May I also suggest you fire up synaptic and install kubuntu-desktop if you have a fairly nice system? (My sister runs Kubuntu on a 950Mhz maching with 512RAM... a little slow but she and I think it is better than Ubuntu's GNOME) Yes that is to compile programs... what do you need to do that for? If they're your own you'll need to install the developer libraries of GCC, Glibc and other stuff. Try out ubuntuforums.org for more info. But wait! If you're trying to do that for programs that are in the Ubuntu repository... please don't try that. It can confuse Ubuntu and break some other programs in the proccess (I learned the hard way). If you want to install anything... use Synaptic or go to a terminal and type
Nice to have you back Valkyri! If you have any questions PM or email me @ cpu dot crazy at gmail dot com. @Buddboy and Goop2.. you should download Automatix too! It's great. ------------------ [This message has been edited by CPUFreak91 (edited April 26, 2006).] |

Solved the problem, course im wishing i had one: seen your post sooner, and two am also wondering how VLC is running anyhow. I found a post online at file:///home/mike/So%20sue%20me%20%C2%BB%20Blog%20Archive%20%C2%BB%20Compiling%20VLC.html to answer your question on why the make command CPU. But what really makes me mad at myself is the fact that i could have into synaptic and typed in VLC under all and voila grrr. 4 hours wasted for nothing. VLC runs but I admit it does seem a little shaky. but hey, it runs, so i guess i shouldn't complain. I'll be sure to check out that kubuntu deal my system specs are a little higher but not by much. Thanks. God bless! Valkyri ------------------ |

Nice to see you here Valkyri! Did you get your graphics card working too? That and sound/music playing are the things that can take a little while to get working first but after that you just install stuff using synaptic. ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

ummmm.... a rather sad question but how do you go about taking care linux; in this case Ubuntu; as in defraging, scan disk and so on? Without killing it. I go to read the info page on e2defrag and in a very scary warning tells me that: Note that unlike the fsck program, defrag MUST NOT be run on a mounted file system device (unless invoked with the -r (readonly) option, which is always safe). Also note that if you defragment a partition containing a bootable kernel image, you will have to reinstall the boot loader for that image (since the location on disk of the image may have changed). Remember, if defrag fails to complete for any reason (including power glitches, kernel bugs etc.), you will be left with a terminally sick, and possibly completely unreadable, filesystem, so backup any valuable data before you start.

quote: Format your drive with ReiserFS next time. As for defragging and "taking care" Don't worry about it. I'm using 1 ext3, 4 ReiserFS and 1 XFS partition for a looong time. Ubuntu pretty much takes care of itself. Now gentoo on the other hand.... EDIT: fsck does a good job of taking care of ext3 and ext2 partitions. Like I said, don't worry about taking care of much stuff in Ubuntu. ------------------ [This message has been edited by CPUFreak91 (edited May 01, 2006).] |

wow, that's sweet i did not know that. with windows you have to defrag at least once a month. man this is going to take some getting used to. Thus an interesting question comes to mind. If these file systems take care of themselves so well, how come everybody else (windows, and others) don't use them? btw what is ReisFS; I have never heard of it, course I not heard of many other things when it comes to UNIX/Linux anything, so yeah. Anyway, God bless, and thanks for the help! ------------------ |

quote: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There are some linux FS' that do get fragged easily, but on most of them you can't tell or they fix themselves. ReiserFS is a very nice File System designed by Hans Reiser. Want more info? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reiserfs) ------------------ |

ReiserFS is basicly fast journaling, stable and robust FS. It also packs files nicer which saves on overall disk space. Compared to Ext3 i saved around 3GB in space on a 250Gb hard drive If your going to write a lot of small files on your hard drive, then ReiserFS is best for you. If your going to write a lot of big files (movies, torrents etc) then your best off with Ext3. I do a lot of scripting on my box and have loads of libraries an such that I have wrote, so I user ReiserFS for my main / partition. Hope this helps ------------------

Stupid question, but when I go to the Ubuntu downloads, all I see are a ton of files and I assume that the ISO ones are what I want...but how the heck do I use them? ------------------ |

here read this article, i wrote it... it's about Kubuntu, but they're pretty much the same only difference is Kubuntu has KDE... http://cblog.furytech.net/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=11&blogId=7 that will help you on it... it's long, and it may be hard to read... but it should help you... also, if you do use it and it helps you, (or even if it doesn't) please post a comment, it would be appreciated. ------------------ |
