Hey, just wondering is there any 2D MMORPG makers out there? I was looking for one that is sort of similar to the RPG Toolkit. It would be preferable that they are free and free of viruses. I've also heard of Graal, which is a MMORPG mmaker as well. Anything like this would be fine. I just want to make a small game for me and my friends to play. (oh, yeah, it would need more features than runescape to get my friends to play it.)

Free as in beer? Or free as in open source?

Hrm, so perhaps Eclipse would be up your alley? Screenshots of games made with the engine look very similar to what I remember of Graal, and they advertise no programming needed. Their forums look well-populated and very helpful and newbie-friendly, though I haven't looked into this engine personally.

Cheers!

And btw, I see you're new here, so welcome to CCN! We're glad to have you here.

oh, I tried Eclipse and didn't really like it. Are you sure there aren't any others? possibly isometric? If not, just go ahead and tell me the 2D ones.

*shrug* There are others, certainly -- but the trouble is finding one that's "easy" to use.

World Forge has kept my interest for a while -- it looks to have very good talent and dedication behind the project of creating a very realistic and professional MMORPG toolset. There are a variety of client options to choose from, and development seems to be consistent and regular. It's not yet mature though, and I'm guessing it would take some work to get a playable game up and running with it. I haven't looked into it seriously for a while though (over a year), so I don't really know.

There is always the option of running an Ultima Online shard with something like Wolfpack or RunUO -- though there's a lot of help available for such things, it might be a challenge to get up and running (certainly doable, but it's not a 1-click-install).

Byond looks quite good and usable, but looks to require a fair bit of scripting ability to get up and running. Plenty of tutorials, but again, not a 1-click-install sort of thing.

DimensioneX looks interesting -- I couldn't find any screenshots of games made with it, so I don't know if it's isometric or not, but it seems to have a fairly good tutorial. This seems to be closer to what you're aiming for -- free, cross-platform, little/no programming knowledge needed.

Player Worlds looks also to be something right up your alley. It's windows-only (as it's written in VB), but it looks like it's simple and working and designed for someone to make a game for friends to play on. Check it out! The forums look good and helpful, with a decent (albeit short) getting started guide, and another getting started guide.

I hope this was helpful! I spent way too much time writing this post, but I'll check back later to see how you're doing.

Cheers!

The two that appeal to me most are Eclipse and Playerworlds. What do you think I should go with. (Be wary of the fact that I'm not inexperienced. I've been teaching myself coding, art, and other game making skills for three years now.)

Since you've got previous experience with Eclipse, I would say at least give Player Worlds a shot and see how hard it is to get up and running, then you'll have enough information to make a decision between the two after a couple of days with Player Worlds.

Cheers!

I remembered another one which might be right up your alley. It's called "Odyssey Online Classic" -- it was programmed by a guy named Justin Schumacher, and is a quality game that you can easily use to make a really fun MMORPG for you and your friends to play. It's completely free, requires no programming knowledge (though you can write scripts to do really extra-cool stuff), it's 2D, not hard to write quests, etc. I did some searching, and found it over here:
http://www.odysseyclassic.com/postnuke/html/index.php

The graphics are pretty good for a 2D game, and the games can be a *lot* of fun. I adminned on the original server for a number of years, made lots of quests, lots of monsters, plenty of guilds and guild halls -- it was loads of fun. Try it -- I think you'll really enjoy it!

Ah, sorry. That site I sent you to is a closed-source fork of the original Odyssey Classic. Looks like the one that you might want is at this location.

Cheers!
