Hello welcome to the first model competition. This competition will not have one single winner, however there will awards that each model may be awarded, such as most detailed, funniest, etc. The competition will have a theme, and the theme will be a robot. Now you will NOT need to put your name on it, as a few people had a problem with that rule in the wallpaper competition. Now each model can be textured, but it is not required. This contest will end March 18 2006. Then the voting will start. The voting will be done like the wallpaper war. RULES All work must be your own (and if it's not you are soley responsible, like say the person who originally made the model finds out), if any models enter are not your work you will be disqualified. Keep each model original, so like making a model of Data from Star Trek TNG or C-3PO would not be original. Making a robot model can range from a car with legs to a floating bot, or to a mech. Long as it resembles a robot in someway. An engine or car would not be a robot. All models can be done in any modelling program. But it must be a modelling program. All model pictures pictures must be urls. It makes the thread load easier. Each model cannot receive critisim, unless the author permits so. If they do, ALL critisisim must be CONSTRUCTIVE. END OF RULES Have Fun and don't work about true competition!

Ok, I was talking to someone online and there will be a category for people who enter in the contest without a robot. So there will be awards for non-robots, even though the main theme will stay the same. ------------------ [This message has been edited by lava (edited January 18, 2006).] |

here's mine, he's a space robot, programmed to defend earth and spread the word... btw, do we have to create our own textures too, or is it ok to use premade - the cool looking eyeball and matallic skin are DarkTree's. I just created the model. [This message has been edited by coolj (edited January 19, 2006).] |

You don't have to use your own textures, just make sure you have their permission or if it's noted on the site that they are for personal or royalty free use. BTW. please make sure all of you models link to the site where you uploaded it rather than the post the image itself. Sample: Do this: Don't do this:
The reason why this is a rule is because it makes the thread show up better ------------------ [This message has been edited by lava (edited January 18, 2006).] |

buddboy, there is plenty of 3d modeling software available for free. I recommend blender for an all-in-one. (Beware, it can be intimidating). I know lava uses Wings3D and I did try it. Very good program. I'd recommend that to you, probably over blender which I imagine will just scare you with all of its buttons and options. It's a tricky interface. At the least, start with Wings3D. ------------------ |

i know that... it's not that i didn't think there was free stuff... just i have to run anything i download by my dad... and we don't have a lot of space on most of our hard drives... but he is gonna move a new hard drive (120 GB YAY!!) into our AMD Athlon... so maybe then i'll be able to... but he is moving the stuff over, but still... i mean, 120 GB... there's gonna be some space... lol! ------------------ |

there are gret tuts for blender though. I learned the basics in a few hours. ------------------ |

I was using the noob-to-pro tutorial, but its unfinished, so the sections on texturing and UV mapping are really choppy. Anything after that section is bits and pieces. Fortunately, up until that point, it's very informative. ------------------ |

and also, blender might intimidate me... but only if it's so really hard to understand that you need somebody to show you... i figured out GIMP (which was kind of complicated, especially since all the tutorials were for older versions with different menus GUIs...) pretty easily... but i will start with Wing3D so as not to have any hassle just in case... but i have to get him to let me first! and that won't probably be until he moves that hard-drive in... ------------------ |

quote: Thanks! I'm sure you can do what i did. Mine is just some spheres and cubes put together, what makes it look cool is the textures (which I didn't make). The only thing I really had to -model- was the arms, and all I did for those was create a trapazoid and keep extruding and moving one of the faces to grow the arms and fingers. then I copied it 3 times, so I would have 4 arms. Here you can see the wireframe and without textures- |

I am busy procrasinating at the moment oh, and what do you guys use for textures? |
crazyishone Member Posts: 1685 From: Registered: 08-25-2004 |
alot of programs have texturing stuff built in. You just modify settings, etc. (This is called procedural texturing). But you can make textures in gimp/ps, (even paint if you want to), or use programs specially designed for texture editing and creation. Wood Workshop ------------------ |
kiwee Member Posts: 578 From: oxfordshire, england Registered: 04-17-2004 |
I know how to make the textures, but what program do you use to put them on, or do you use UVmaps? |
firemaker103 Member Posts: 643 From: Registered: 07-13-2005 |
I'm trying for the worst, because frankly, I don't have any past modeling experiances. Unless you count making an unsmoothed, un textured, bad sniper rifle, made from just cylinders :P ------------------ |
