i am currently using knoppix-live. dont laugh, . i was about to install it onto the hd when i decided to wait and ask around. i know that knoppix isnt a "serious" distro, tho i cant see to much wrong with it. (then again i am so new to linux i am stupid with it. lol)... anyway, the age old question----which distro? i want a GUI. i have yet to get used to using the various shells. ummm....lots of apps bundeled with the download would also be nice, cuz i dont know the linux world very well, and its kinda cool to explore the various open source apps....see wat they do, etc...

i'm pretty new to linux too. i know the serious users will mock it, but fedora core 4 is loaded with programs, and it's easy to install. i like it, i'm just waiting for some ram i ordered, and a dual slot 1 board to come in before i get my linux box up and running again. ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

From distro's I have used (mandrake, ubuntu, kubuntu) I chose kubuntu because it's the simplest to use and installing programs and required components is easy. What's important in my opinion is that the distro has a package manager (program that can be used to install/update stuff) and that the latest versions of the most important packages are available. ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

well, i did a little research, and it looks like i will be going with mandriva, ubuntu, or SUSE. thankfully, all of them are free at this time and i got the feeling that they are for intermediate users. at some point i intend to try out slackware, but that will be probably a year or two down the road. any last input, to help me decide between the three i mentioned? ------------------ [This message has been edited by crazyishone (edited December 26, 2005).] |

quote: If you are thinking of using ubuntu then I would recommend trying kubuntu instead. Because the difference between kubuntu and ubuntu is that kubuntu has KDE desktop environment which is more similar with window's desktop environment, in my opinion. And I never got my graphics card's drivers working in ubuntu while they work fine in kubuntu. ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

i have one big thing against ubuntu, it wouldn't let me login under root. i don't know if it just didn't set it up, or something, but i couldn't install anything under the username it allowed me to create. but i slapped fedora core 3 and installed it with a little effort. i had to move files around and install the rpm's, but it was easy even for a linux newbie. ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

yah, i think its either mandriva or ubuntu that i read automatically disables the root account. apparently it isnt that hard to enable tho. :-/ anyway, i will check out kubuntu, cuz i like KDE and am not all too familiar with GNOME. ------------------ |

ok, it is final. i decided to go with ubuntu at first, but since kubuntu has KDE instead of GNOME, i am going with that. downloading right now. ------------------ |

you can choose which one to use in fedora if i'm not mistaken. other than the root thing, i liked ubuntu. good luck. ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

quote: I have the same problem with ubuntu. Maybe I should try kubuntu too. When I searched through the forums, I found that ubuntu didn't support a Matrox Millenium 550 with a DVI connection, which is exactly what I have... Has something to do with unsupported/half finished drivers. [This message has been edited by vincent (edited December 27, 2005).] |

well, my download keeps failing cuz of my stupid connection. htere is a weirdness that causes the connection to go out, and once the download stops, it refuses to start again. i will have to keep trying or wait until tonight when people stop calling the house. we shouldnt be having this issue with DSL, but the guy said it might happen i we set up a wireless connection (which i did). ------------------ |

i have NO idea what you guys are talking about, other than it is about Linux... My dad says the reason we don't switch to Linux (he said it is definitely faster and better) is that most programs don't work with it... I don't know beans about Linux... (sorry to be sorta off topic!!) ------------------ |

well, i am now running kubuntu linux, love KDE, and finally (obviously) got my internet set up with it. Took a freakishly long time, but I figured it out for myself and learned alot in the process. You gotta love the man pages. i was reading thru a list of all the UNIX commands, kinda like the glossary of the man pages.....i was floored. There are like...thousands. ------------------ |
