yah, so pretty much this is self-explanatory. its a comptetion of who can make the best program by the end of 1 week. the comp ends next saturday. no real criteria...it can do anything. doesnt have to be a game. it can be command line. doesnt matter. we'll vote right here on the site, and I along with {some volunteer} will judge as well. so u can win the pop. vote and/or the jugding. winners' prize: nothing more than respect and experience. ------------------ |

Does it need a GUI? And if not, will that affect your score? Just some questions!! ------------------ |

i said it could be command line i u want it to be. its more about the prog itself, tho good gfx will prob get you more votes from the people. As a judge, i won't take off points for no GUI, but if some1 else has the same kind of prog as u (christmas spending tracker, perhaps?), and they have a GUI...they're gonna get more points. see what I mean? ------------------ |
buddboy Member Posts: 2220 From: New Albany, Indiana, U.S. Registered: 10-08-2004 |
Yah that's what I meant... Guess I'll have to get coding.. Wish I actually knew enough code to make something useful lol!! i have a chance tho... <EDIT> We could have divisions so a game isn't competing against a Christmas spending tracker... Cuz everyone likes games... Whatever..</EDIT> ------------------ [This message has been edited by buddboy (edited December 17, 2005).] |

Nuh-UH!! Mine is gonna be serious... well... sorta... did you mean serious like "take something seriously" or serious as in the only fully developed and worked on game... cuz if you meant the latter (latter... who says latter?) yours won't be the only one... if you meant the first one mine doesn't qualify... its too funny!! ------------------ |

If I get enough work done on my flight sim project I'll post it in as well. the idea is to make a WWII fighter MMORPG eventually, but the single player is almost playable. BTW, I'm still working on Soul Catcher, just struggling with some level design tool issues. This is just a side project. Alot of cool stuff though, like real time reflection in the cockpit glass and really cool smoke, engines that can flame out, oh and explosions (always a fan favorite) All the sound and textures work, and you can fly the plane, no enemies or particle effects yet though. ------------------ |
Ereon Member Posts: 1018 From: Ohio, United States Registered: 04-12-2005 |
Shouldn't be hard to get those done though. ------------------ |
crazyishone Member Posts: 1685 From: Registered: 08-25-2004 |
well, my program is making progress, but I don't think it will be done in time... I'm considering releasing a beta. Is there anything more primitive than beta? is alpha more or less advanced in the dev. process? whichever one means super basic general idea, thats the one you will see. ------------------ |
Jari Member Posts: 1471 From: Helsinki, Finland Registered: 03-11-2005 |
alpha would be more primitive than beta. Alpha versions aren't usually released in public unless it's a open source project which doesn't have to worry about imago... ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

I keeep getting the same error.. expecting end-of-file.. it's coded in Blitz... problem is I asked for help on here and nobody could figure out anything wrong with it... I put it in the new game posting i started... Do you have a Blitz compiler? If you do, can I send you the source and you see if it will work for you or if you can fix it? (I hate to ask for help, but I would really like to have a chance at winning the first comp i participate in...it would be cool) ------------------ |

ok here is my entry, its about 5 meg download, most of that being the song. it may not run right on all computers here are so possible problems.. other than that enjoy it lasts about 4 minutes the photo of my daughter i thought just went well with it, though that is 2 christmas's ago now.. i just noticed in the form i accidently put 2006 instead of 2005, oh well i can't compile it again now.. http://www.godcentric.com/CCNDEMO/GCchristmas.zip cheers, ------------------ |

in case i cant get on tomorrow, i will judge later and those of you who are eager to get results can ask the other guy to judge. competition officially ends at 11:59:99 {u get the point } on christmas eve, tho entries are accepted until i judge, which could be days after christmas because i have family over. hopefully this will be enough time to see some really awesome progs, even if they didnt quite meet the deadline. ------------------ |

Does this even have to be a "competition"? I think the best thing to do for next year's Christmas competition is to start it before Thanksgiving, plenty of time. BTW, I got the same problem, Jari. ------------------ |
Jari Member Posts: 1471 From: Helsinki, Finland Registered: 03-11-2005 |
Thanks for reporting the error! I'll try to figure it out... It's because of this visual C++ 2005 express edition that I recently started using and the exe's it creates seem to require something, perhaps it's the net framework 2.0. I hope not.... Lava, I don't care about competition, it's just nice to see people making Christian apps. ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) [This message has been edited by jari (edited December 29, 2005).] |

well, the reason i have been slack with the deadline goes along with what you are saying. it's nice to see apps being dev.'d by people on this site. mine wont be done in time anyway, so I have given up on making the deadline, lol. Anyway, whoever the other person was that said they would judge, go ahead when u feel like it. I am still working on a consistent internet connection (installed new OS, kubuntu linux.) You will have my descisions on New Years. Sorry to hold up those of you that have finished, but I'd like to see as many apps as possible. You guys are turning out great work. After this we should set up a more long term programming/app creation competition, as lava had suggested. People had expressed interest in this a few months ago/. ------------------ |

Jari, I got the error too- This worked for me- I found these instructions here:
2) Copy msvcr80.dll, msvcp80.dll, msvcm80.dll files into the Microsoft.VC80.CRT folder 3) In the Microsoft.VC80.CRT folder create a text file named: 4) Paste the following content into the Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> 5) Save the manifest file -- you should be able to run it now. |

well, here are my results::::: most usefull app:: firemaker's "SelfServer" [B]original idea::[\B] (at least i havnt seen it before, and he did it quite well) RealmMaster's ChristmasLights [B]most attractive::[\B] well, firemaker's "colorful" looked cool, but Klumsy's app incorporated music and had a GUI and whatnot, so he gets the win. [B]best game::[\B] tho i was impressed by lava's adventure demo and have high hopes for him, i really liked jari's game. It was like ...early doom/quake gameplay....with atari graphics...and christian principles.. Very nice. best overall will be decided by ye olde voters. the other judge can do whatever he feels like doing. ------------------ |

yes, im still on chap 7 of the same book u have. i had to stop for the holidays. family was over and there was nowhere to lock myself in and read. GUI seems much easier in Blitz than it will be for me in C++. oh well. i've got lots of time now. ------------------ |
